Dantay's VI Legion. Hvarls Headtakers

First off, let me just say how impressed I am with your modeling and painting. There is just something about a a gnarly, brutal "Wolves" thread that tugs on your heartstrings.

You are doing a marvelous job and should continue to follow your instincts. The dirtied up Levi looked great before, but now it has more story and character behind it with the weathering. Grey is a tough color to weather sometimes because the chips need to stand out, but not too much. On my Black Templars, which have a lot of grey on them (long story), I use a terracotta color to help the chips stand out.

I have a Fire Raptor, Lightning and Storm Eagle to paint up, so do I stick with te bolder style of knot work design, or bring it more in line with FW's vision?

I think the question is much simpler.

Do you want your stuff to look like everyone else's that does it the FW way, or do you want your Rout to be unique looking because of your extra effort?

Atia, I will have to look into some rust streak effects.

Its a shame because I have just placed an order for a bunch of stuff and a new sparmax airbrush.

Cheers Honda, very constructive advice. Oh and holy crap using brown is a revelation. Tried it out and it looks great, let me know what you think in the pictures below.

OakRiver, the shields are from GW's dwarf range, cannot remember exactly which kit. I think Hammerers/ Longbeards maybe.

Anyways, I have finished the dreadnought (as yet un-named) . Had a spare drill arm so painted that up. Then obliterated the paint job trying blood spatter.

I did it for Angron 2 years ago, by loading up the brush with BftBG and blowing  at the desired area. Its a bit hit and miss as to what you hit, but te random way it goes across te model isfairly realistic. I reckon you could get better aim using the airbrush. Use high psi for high velocity spatter, and low psi for hitting with blunt/sharp instruments :D

Anyways , let me know what you think.

And I really must get these guys and their templar allies finished off :)

Yes, the updates to your Levi are an improvement. Now, don't grudge me, but you may want to consider highlighting a few of the chips with a lighter color (light grey, off white, cream, something like that) to give the chips some depth. You don't have to do all of them, but some with the added depth will really pop out.

I would practice on something <not Levi> until you find the color you like the most.

The shields on your..."Huscarls?" are really eye catching. Very distinctive looking. Two thumbs up.

You have Templars you're not painting?

Lol, the Templars are an allied in unit to my breachers. For Lord Blackwood :) In 40K terms,I'd run them as 2 units of wolf guard with storm shield and CC weapon plus bolter or bolt pistol (standard 30K breachers are just shield and bolter). Going from what he has done, I might conceivably consider a templar/ fist army to run alongside the Wolves in the future. They can fill the gaps in my 30K army which the Wolves cannot do (plus on the allies matrix for 30K they are brothers in arms).

The Templar brethren are 95% done, but need to go back and finish the whole unit off.

No grudge at all. Live and learn, besides the critiques help us to develop, so all is good :)

Most of the chips were highlighted with a white/ admin grey mix, but could go to pure white, as the edge highlight is pure admin grey. The chips in the cream section are done with pure white, the un-highlighted bits might be blood spatter :D

Will try it when I get home tomorrow. I have to pack my stuff tonight as my 3 weeks on shift is soon going to be over :tu:

Back to my other projects.

Hvarl.

I am looking at axes for him. I want it to be a big axe, as it is called Hearth Splitter

So I looked at an old slayer axe from the fantasy dwarf range

Is it too big?

Other contenders are:

I also want to get rid of the twin drums on his "Heavy Bolter" and reposition the left leg a little.

Thoughts??

I would avoid to use Logan's axe as it's quite an important lore weapon, and a chaos tainted weapon (yeah yeah, same with the "runepriests", for you guys it's ok :P).

So I have decided to do a flyer...

And it will be in non-Space Wolves colours

That way either my old man or me can use it in-game (if he ever chooses an army)

I want to do a Star Wars inspired colour scheme, but I am torn between the traditional star wars colour scheme or Poe damarans fighter colours

The off white colour will be okay to work with, the dark patches and the yellow will make nice contrasting colours and the lighter main colour will help show weathering and battle damage

The black could look killer

So what are your thought?

This is where the Lightning is at just now, just sketching around. Also the black is just primer (which went on horrible, due to freezing conditions in the garage), so it will get painted over no matter what

A bit more Dusty Crophopper than Poe Damaran, but not too bad. Paint is still very crude as I am not going to start doing real work until I settle on what it is I plan to do.

Well, decided that I hate painting white, or at least on large scale miniatures.

Airbrush would have been perfect for this

Still slowly working on the Lightning.. got to do the highlights on one side of the black...

I am trying some new paints and washes, still not 100% on them and went overboard on the staining from the exhaust vents.

Thank you Orky ard Boyz :)

Oakriver: Thanks you. Mthe plans for the canopy, because it is not too clear, I am going to spray with tamiya clear red then paint the frame in black to match the body. If the clear makes it realy hard to see inside, I will not bother with the cockpit details and will instead fit the pilot inside one of my knight titans instead.

Cheers Bjorn Firewalker. It is a really well designed model and looks like it is moving a hundred miles per hour eve when sitting still

Now that I am home, I had a sit-down at my hobby area to take stock.

And I realised that I am losing my direction. I have a lot of hal done models but no clear idea of what I want the to be or how I want to finish them.

This guy for example... I envisioned him as a caster of runes, maybe conneected to the 13th company, but how do I gt the rune-caster look across?

What would make him "pop"?

And this one... again, a caster of runes?

As I look at my collection, I am struggling to see it as a cohesive whole, certainly among the HQ choices.

This is abut how far along I got with Hvarl... I cut 1 of the legs and widened his stance, an gave the axe an actual edge. Ii also got fed up with the blight launcher and swapped it for a heavy bolter, and used a drum magazine.... Still not sure if I should make it belt fed the same as the SW terminator assault cannons
