The 'Profane Defilers' Chaos Marine Legion, while they are Slaanesh based I decided to fly in the face of the norm when it came to their colour scheme and the way they look.

I fancied a techno-organic feel, a nightmarish fusion of machine and flesh like in cyber-punk anime and Tetsuo the Iron-Man film series.

So I started off with three chaos dreadnoughts or hell brutes as they are called these days, these ones are the first ever lead ones that look nothing like any of dreadnought you may be used to these days and have been in my collection for a long long long time. Click Here! / Click Here!

Had to strip them back down which since they where metal wasn't so hard or risky.

For two of them I customized the heavy plasma cannon using two Stranglethorn Cannons side by side and a Venom Cannon from an old plastic Tyranid Warrior sprue and an ammo drum from Imperial Guard Auto Cannon Team to act as a Twin Las' Cannon and a Reaper Autocannon.

My only regret is I suck at taking photo's or I would pepper this thread with them everything comes out all blurred or to dark or fails to show the models off in all their glory.

Been using a lot of possessed Space Marine bits alongside other chaos marine bits to make each Chaos Marine unique in its own way as well as parts from Tryanid Warriors like the cabling and such to help give it that bio-mechanical feel to my army.

The Havoks are using these parts Click Here! for back packs and missile launcher since not only are Missiles Launchers (at least in my view) highly flexible weapons with reasonable range. But I was also a great fan of Space Crusade and Advanced Space Crusade as well as Space Hulk with all the upgrade model packs that came out for them.

Personally I buy my bits'n'bobs for conversions and scratch building from E-Bay it's cheaper especially if you’re putting your own stamp on your army to make it stand out as yours and not some generic look, but perhaps that's just me heh!

I am also currently putting off putting together the Chaos Decimator with Conversion Beamer and Siege Claw, as well as my Chaos Knight (has the forge world parts), it's gonna have an Avenger Gatling Cannon  Arm, a Thunderstrike Gauntlet and a Twin Icarus Cannon. Been considering switching out the Heavy Snubber for a Meltagun.

The latter due I find the prospect to putting it together quite intimidating as I have no instructions since I got it off e-bay heh!

Now onto the actual paint scheme, it's pretty simple as shown below.
http://imageshack.com/a/img922/1921/oTbTck.jpg

I start off with a base coat Chaos Black followed by a coat of Warplock Bronze before adding Kantor Blue to the joints and any techno flesh area of the armour often found on the Possessed Chaos Marine Torso/Legs/Arms/Shoulder Pads and Helmets.

Next I apply Balthasar Gold to the trimmings, details and cables, if there is no helmet then painting skin on to the exposed head (different skin types so have a varied collection) and red, blues and greens for any wires leading to the helmet or head. I may add other colours but only as required.

Finally I use Nuln Oil Wash, this when dry gives it a dark look that when you turn the model in the light you get to see a nice antique dark bronze like colour to each model. BUT add it not with a big brush but with a medium or small brush as you don’t want to drench it or water log the model in the wash.

Also be ready with a spare brush to suck up any excess wash or you end up with whole area’s completely black, now once this is done I add Glistening Green to the eyes of the Helmet and skulls and any other eye like decoration and voila!...It’s done!

After all that just need to do the base for which I use Astrogranite Texture followed by a little bit of Nuln Oil Wash  and then Goblin Green around the sides with no wash. OH nearly forgot needed to add some Liquid Green Stuff to areas that when put together due to most the models being a mix'n'match of parts, just so as to leave no gaping holes or gaps, sometime even using normal Green Stuff to tiny to small areas.

(my skill in sculpting is neigh on zero)

And there you have it heh!

Sounds like a solid set-up, would love to see some pics. I'd highly recommend getting that Decimator together, it's one of my favorite models to field. Would definitely recommend pinning the legs, though--they're a :cuss: to field, otherwise! Love the Chaos Dreads, a truly bizarre model with a lot of charm. How were they to paint up?

Thanks Naryn, I'll see about some photo's when I'm off next which should be.......................

*counts fingers  then uses paper and pen before  using a calculator then calendar, before giving up and using the work roster for nights shifts*

Friday Yup I'll take some pictures friday though I should warn you they will most likely come out blurred or dark since I use my phone as a camera, and the camera on it is not that fantastic to say the least heh!

That and while I may be proud of my models I have to admit paint wise I'm better and kit bashing scratch builds and conversions than the painting side, especially painting yellow models (curse you  Imperial fists my bane) Why I tend to go for metallic colour's when I can as you don't have to bother so much with the highlighting and edging so much, Yeah I know I'm a lazy gretchin hehehehehe!

Okay getting on to the 1st edition Chaos Dreadnought/Hell Brute, it's actually easy to paint in fact it's a real pleasure  but I do have advice to any one wanting to paint 1st edition models.

1. WARNING THESE MODELS HAVE HIGH LEAD CONTENT! Use vinal gloves when handling them in an unpainted or primed state! Failing that scrub your hands with soup and water or equivalent afterwards especially under the nails. DO NOT!.....I REPEAT DO NOT! PLACE YOUR FINGER IN YOUR MOUTH AFTER HANDLING THEM IN AN UNPAINTED ON UNPRIMED STATE!  The metal is toxic if ingested even ingesting something that has made contact with this metal can cause lead poising!

(This warning is often used but with different words with all of Citadel Miniatures metal products or products that had metal in them, which back then 95% did)

2. If you have to strip them back make sure they haven't been varnished as the varnish from back in the good ol'days was top notch stuff and while the model may break when you drop it on the floor the varnish would never chip. Down side is you can't use liquid chemical or sonic's to strip back this varnish, you could try scraping and sanding/filing it but you run a very high risk of messing up the model itself since the high lead content made it a soft'ish metal.

3. To prep the old 1st edition metal models first, refer to point one above! Then soak in soapy water (i used washing up liquid) and rub with a cloth (one which ins never used for any thing else and stored separately form other wash cloths) before soaking in hot water that is comfortable in temperature to put you hands in with out discomfort or scolding.

4. Leave over night to dry then (nods to point one again) you are ready to give them a light base coat, you wont need to use smelly primer as the paint sticks to the soft metal like Pepe Le'pew to poor Penelope the Cat.

5. when painting use light coats as often enough the detailing in the metal is not as deep as in more modern metal and plastic models and you run the risk of covering up some of the detail when you give it a base coat followed, by the main coloured layers.

If you keep these points in mind especially the first point, the 1st edition Dreadnought is an utter dream to paint, in fact it takes hardly no time at all unless your going to go into considerable fine detail as you often see in the 'Golden Daemon' awards.

I think that'll do for now next up some the models that are a work in progress or need to be stripped back down and repainted again.

Since the above post I've filled in the symbol of slaanesh on the banner made of skin, made it black as if to represent demon ichor, that way the skin that made the banner could represent that  taken from the legions most heated foes and the Ichor from perhaps those Daemonettes that have displeased their mistress/master? hehehe!

Okay moving on here's my Hell Forged Proteus Land Raider, it's actually my old Space Wolf Land Raider that I've got down from the loft and going to re-purpose it,used an all puropse glue to attach the weapons and odd's and ends  because it cheap crappy glue that just peels right off. As proper glue goes it's useless and wont keep any thing together.

Once the photo's where taken I just slightly pull at the parts and they come away with out any trouble the glue just peels and rubs away with out any fuss so I can strip the paint back ready for repainting, as you can see the twin Las'cannons on either side are from a Tyranid Warrior sprue from my bits'n'bobs box.

While the Havok Launcher...can't even remember when or where I got that from I knowit's not official GW though heh! though I am thinking of swamping the Heavy Bolters out for either another pair of  Las'Cannons or a Heavy Flamer not sure yet to be honest in two minds which.

Thank's outlanders luke I appreciate that

Okay Got some of my Chaos Spawn units, tried to keep them as resembling what they once where as possible yet keeping them as beyond Human as possible, the 1st I'm going to have to touch up a bit more maybe strip back the silver and replace it with Balthasar Gold.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/923/sqYwur.jpg

The 2nd ones I will have to strip back and repainted though this will be done grudgingly as I  love how it came out but it doesn't fit in with the colour scheme for the army as a whole which is a shame as do love how it came out. Suck but has to be done. *sighs*

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/922/tdxU54.jpg

This last one has the right colour scheme but still needs work, area's that still need painting before I apply the Nuln Oil to it, how ever any traces of it having once been Human let alone a Chaos Space Marine has long since vanished, may as well whack a collar and lead on it and put out on guard duty or have it fetch your slippers hehehehehe!

And finally this poor guy was once a proud member of a Chaos Terminator Squad now he's been over taken by all the gifts and mutation blessed upon him by Slaanesh now he is just a Robeast...oops!...Wrong franchise :whistling:

The Dreadnoughts I spoke off earlier in this thread, these need to be stripped back still as the paint job was form my younger days and as you can see is some what messy to say the least and defiantly need's to be redone, and maybe have the Power Claw repositioned as it looks as if it's shy and who has ever seen a shy Dreadnought? :wacko.:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/924/FWHLan.jpg

Above with Twin Las'cannon!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/923/8KwSGW.jpg

Above with Reaper Auto Cannon!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/XZX5jp.jpg

Above with Plasma Cannon!

As you see these three need to be striped right back, of course that will cause the plastic and of the metal bits'n'bobs I added to them to come away and need re-glueing into place and painted as well but hey if it has to be done then it has to be done!

I guess that what happens when you dig out an old model you've painted from over twenty or so years ago and compar eit to what you can do now   heh!

The Champion for one of my six man Havok Squads, why six you may ask well six is the sacred number of Slaanesh!

All ready posted earlier in the thread one of the Havok members with a Missile Launcher.

The Aspiring Champion with Powerfist and Storm Bolter Combi'Bolter.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/923/VfS9nH.jpg

Will need to work on those skull's a little more, maybe some highlights, and that base needs a few touch ups too.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/I7fGVt.jpg

The neck, Feet and eye on the chest need touch ups me thinks.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/vYb2vt.jpg

Gonna need some fine touch up's around fangs just next to the tongue and defiantly those skulls, maybe a try giving that lens on the camera a clean too as still getting squiggles and grains of white on the picture.

Next is the first icon bearer for the Havok squad.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/922/XFkU8U.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/CJx7dy.jpg

No doubts about it needs a little fine touch ups here and there, amazing what a camera can pick up that the eye can miss.

Okay found some more bits that need to be touched up before I even consider getting started on the repaint of the old Land Raider Model I've stripped down ready to be worked upon, first off the Icon barer for my second squad of six Havoks.

While I defiantly need a to get my own camera as the one I keep borrowing (since my phones camera sucks) defiantly has something wrong with the lens as keep getting white grins and squiggles here and there.

*sighs*

Oh well let's get to it shall we?

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/922/sWg0Dr.jpg

The shoulder pads need some work on the bronzed area, I must have used to much Nuln Oil upon them which is one of the problems when you use washes, the shaft needs some touch up along the bottom area you can see bits of Chaos Black showing though.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/923/jFRLgg.jpg

The back of those legs and the base of the boots need to be touched up, and that bottom of that shaft dear Slaanesh spare me, it's just awful....may very well remove the shaft at the hand, strip it down and redo it again before gluing it back on and touch up the area its glued at.

Next we have a look at another two of my Havok models that need a slight tweaking as well.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/923/zuNUVa.jpg

Simple one this, just a few touch ups on the boots and missile launcher is all.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/923/23eebG.jpg

Maybe the rim of the shoulder pad too!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/922/46y4d8.jpg

Dear Slaanesh I need to work on the eye area I think!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/924/vovmBE.jpg

Hmnnn I think I need to do some slight touch ups on the missile launcher and maybe remove that left arm, strip it back and repaint it.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/TQjcIp.jpg

Other than a slightest of touch up on the aerial on the top of the back pack it shouldn't be to much of a job to do I think.

Okay I've stripped down the old 1st edition dreadnought's using nail varnish remover, I soaked them for 48hrs in a container with a lid  with just enough nail varnish remover to cover the metal models. It did the trick lovely and a fer hard scrubs latter with a hard bristle scrubbing brush and the metal sculpting tool with the curved hook end that looks like some kind of dentist tool to scrap out the paint in those hard stubborn places and pow!

Now the ranged weapon arms save for the plasma cannon arm will need to be done wit more care, probably using fairy washing up liquid with warm water so the plastic doesn't warp:

I haven't given up on my army, work has caused all progress on them to grind to a halt at the moment.

I do have one up date to speak of, I am redoing the Battlefleet Gothic vessel I cobbled together or kit bashed if you will from spare parts, was going to dissolve the glue and paint and redo it from this:

[Pictures To Be Posted when time allows to upload them to Image Shack]

Alas a blunder on my part saw me put an old metal Empire Great Cannon, in to the tube of Hot Water and Fairy Power Spray. (Though not enough to melt plastic but work with the power spray to strip paint and glue) and the Vessel into a sealable container with Nail Varnish remover, (Which works wonders with Glue and paint on Metal models)

Come next day when I open the containers and remove the models the plastic model had become so soft it was squished into a most awful state between my fingers which made my heat sink as I really had been proud of it, true  it was no great work of art but I immensely happy with it, BUT not one to let a set back hold me down I went on line and searched ebay finding a big job lot of chaos cruiser parts and a cheap Chaos Desolater Battle Ship for just £15 .

So I simply stripped this down to remove paint and glue, re glued it together but with six launch bays and kept that...uh not sure what to call it, looks like a massive dorsal fin buy at the rear of the ships Keel.
Then placed four turrets around the model since most Battle ships Imperial or Chaos normally had no more than 4 Turrets on their army list, still needs to be given a base coat but have to say it looks good and more in keeping with the 40K universe, still miss the plastic model I had created but yeah I kind of like it.

Also means I need to redo the stat's for it which will mean removing the Keel Launch Bays with only Dread Claws. Which had been its unique quirk as a Chaos Marine Vessel but oh well dem's the breaks I guess heh!

Works really getting heavy for the moment but found some time to up load these to ImageShack.

(Grumbles at Photobucket)

Here's the original 'Grand Defiler' before I messed up and turned it into a plastic mush!

That awesome keel mounted launch bays ....... ...R.I.P my creation!

The still in the works new 'Grand Defiler' a Defiler Class Battleship, while it may look better, it still doesn't feel as awesome as something I created from scraps and odd parts laying about in my Bitz-Box! :sad.:

I had three spare wing parts that normally go onto either side of the chaos battleships bridge so I stuck one either side where the large Starboard and port pylons go and one where the aft dorsal fin located on the keel of the vessel should have gone. Just need to give her a light base coat of black now. :happy.:

My Chaos Cultists or at least some of them so far, using some of my Escher models from the Necromunda game for them. :happy.:

My Chaos Cultist Champion with shot gun, her face needs cleaning up and a bit of work to tidy up the rest of the model me thinks.

Like with the champion above these fine ladies need to be touched up a bit to tidy them up!

Well I have just enough time for one more thing, my Exalted Champion, I wanted to make him look like the Warlords Executioner, so equipped him with a power axe which he'd hold in both hands as if to lop a few heads off any slave who would dare disobey or try to betray their master or maybe just make a few examples out of a few lazy buggers who just arn't pulling their weight by publicly and mercilessly beheading them.

Had to do some majoy convetion on the right arm and hand so it would also hold the shaft of the power axe while using parts from an old warhammer chaos warrior, a Frost hammer from a wulfen thunder hammer, space marine biker arms and bits from a possessed space marine.
Thankfully had all those parts left over from previous modelling projects, and the possessed marine bits from the parts I have put a side for my tactical marines, still not sure what to use for the shoulder pads though. That said I am thinking for the left shoulder pad using the slaanesh champion shoulder pad, the one with the sign of slaanesh upon it.

But so far not sure what to use for the right shoulder pad, any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks deathspectersgt7! :happy.:

Happy Belated Slaaneshmas to you all!

Being off over Christmas gave me a chance to work on my army some more, I finished off one of my six chaos marine squad of Havoc’s why only six chaos marines and not a full squad or just five like most respecting players? Well basically because six is the sacred number of Slaanesh and my army is Slaanesh themed, so it’s the sixth member who carries the Icon of Excess.

Swapped out the Combi Bolter and replaced it with a Plasma pistol since you can’t use a power fist and a Combi Bolter, I could have swapped it out for a knife, auspex or some other prop like a grenade or combat knife but to be honest the Aspiring Champion is more likely find himself in close combat/melee with the Sgt or equivariant than a ranged battle.

You maty also ask why missile launchers when Lascannon and Autocannon are the current meta, but the Stratagem: Flakk. Which allows me extra damage to flyers when using Missile Launchers and people I play with love their Flyers and Lords of War @_@ which trust me can be a real pain in the buttocks at time. So, a couple of Havoc Squads with four missile launchers make for a right tasty anti flyer firepower that can still be flexible enough for other roles during the match.

And should I need any extra anti infantry firepower then having my tactical squads equipped with two autocannons more than makes up for any problem in that department, as for any really heavy armour I may encounter I have plenty of dedicated Anti-Vehicle/Lords of War weaponry in the form of Chaos Hellbrutes, Defiler and a Decimator with right tasty C-Beamer.  Get one of those beauties at exactly 72” from an Imperial Knight/Equivariant and it’ll do some nice damage especially if you force the other player to defend form another area from the Defiler’s Battle Cannon, so the ion shield can’t protect the poor knight from both locations during the shooting phase Muwahahaha!

Any way I’m getting of track here are the pictures for the Havoc squad ^_~

And Yes before anyone says anything I forgot about the casting lines before painting them X_X

Hey there brother. I really like what you are doing with your miniatures. It has a Rouge Trader era feel to it. But definitely more sophisticated in your modeling technique. I look forward to more posts. Keep up the good work:thumbsup:

Thank you Brother Lunkhead, I appreciate the kind words.

Well folks I've scraped away the cast lines and dabbed the area on one of the CSM Havoc squad members upper left leg.

(as noted in above post or the post above that heh)

Looks a lot better I have to admit, glad I decided to fix those small issues rather than just doing a 'meh it's good enough' I mean it's just all to easy to do that really heh, but if you force yourself to do it and not keep putting it off over and over again it well worth it.....and knowing is half the battle GI Joooooooe! :biggrin.:

Logan, great models! I especially like how you've painted up the head on your missile launcher trooper above, he features superb color choices on the cables, face, and bionics as well as subtle shading washes.

I respect that you keep your squad size at the Slaanesh holy number. I run my Nurgle CSM in multiples of 7 for the same reason. :)
