How does the Cicatrix Maledictum work?

As I understand it, Cadia fell, and the Cicatrix tord across the galaxy. Daemons swarmed everywhere and the Astronomicon went dark. Some 200 years later, it's settled down, but everything on the far side of the rift cannot see the Astronomicon. Being a giant warp storm, crossing is perilous, but is it impossible? Just how isolated is the Dark Imperium?

Even I, someone that hasn't read the GS books is aware that on the galactic map (available via your favourite search engine) shows there are 2 routes of relatively "safe" avenues with which to cross over.

So to answer your question:

"Pretty isolated"

Guilliman can cross over whenever he wants to shoot lightning out of his arse at the heretics and save the day.

It is specifically stated in Dark Imperium that RG`s crossing of the Cicatrix to help the Blood Angels is one of his greatest achievements in his 100 year long crusade. So I don't really think it is that easy to cross.

In the latest fluff they point out that there are two known paths across the rift and neither are easy to navigate. The one near the Eye of Terror is controlled by anti-Imperial forces and heavily guarded. The one in the eastern end of the rift is unstable and prone to collapse.

Keep in mind that the Cicatrix not just blocks travel to the Imperium Nihilus, but also makes travel inside the Dark imperium very slow and difficult.

Without the light of the Astronomican, warp capable ships can only make short hops though the warp with reasonable reliability, instead of the 1000+ lightyear jumps a a Astronomicon guided navigator can plot. So most Imperial plantes in the Dark Imperium are largely confined to their own sector.

No idea how Guilliman keeps managing to save embattled planets in the Imperium Nihilius in the nick of time. Perhaps his warp drive was designed by Jon Snow.

Are you referring to the novel ? If so, I'm glad they sort of plugged that particular plot hole.

The Terra side of the Imperium where RG is has no problem with the Astronomican , it is only the other side Imperium Nihilus that is blocked from the Astronomican.

From what we know so far RG has saved an embattled planet in Imperium Nihilius only once and that is Baal and in Dark Imperium its made into a pretty big deal.

In Shroud of Night ,which is set in Imperium Nihilius on the other hand , the Emperor basically creates a small astronomicon to help them.

I expect that the Dark Angels when the Lion awakens will get Imperium Nihilius as their  "play-ground" with the Rock being able to make jumps wherever it wants.
