Our codex for Christmas

So I was chatting to the guys at my FLGS yesterday about the new codex drops and I have a theory. The announcements up until now have been stated to be the codex drops up until November.

Everyone knows it makes business sense to have a big drop in time for Christmas. It will also be the turn for a Marine Primarch to round out the second drop. While all 3 of the non codex marines still have no news on their codex I feel it will be ours. I believe wolves are bigger sellers than DA or BA so makes me hopeful that not only will it be our turn for a codex but also we will get the next Primarch.

A slightly weaker note would be Christmas is all about Snow and well what says Christmas more that a big furry wolf from Fenris?

I know it's just major speculation but this is my prediction and I very much hope I am right

I think this whole SW/BA/DA codex in December rumor has been killed so many times but keeps coming back.

It was started by natfka (http://natfka.blogspot.kr/2017/08/list-of-codices-to-be-released-this.html) stating that the next 5 codices were

Thousand Sons

Astra Militarum
Blood Angels
Dark Angels

Space Wolves

and then killed by them a few days later (https://natfka.blogspot.kr/2017/08/getting-to-bottom-of-codex-release-order.html?m=1&fref=gc).

The final-nail-in-the-coffin was that GW released the next release of codices were:

Craftworlds Eldar

Astra Militarum

Tyranids

If GW was going to do a big drop for Christmas it would have been the codex/DG release then instead of now. I would not hope for a December release.

Current release schedule is up to end of November isn't it? Meaning that any speculation goes for the Christmas drop. With no more marines set in the current release schedule I would be very surprised if there wasn't a marine drop. It's GW after all. Marines make money, christmas people spend money, I shall keep my fingers crossed

I wouldn't hold your breath. BA/DA/Orks/Sisters/Tau/1ksons all have rumors that say christmas for them. BA have the best bet imo because they have a book release at the end of november (setting up for release) and their arch-enemies in the books are Tyranids that get released in November.

GW also stated "up to 10 codices" meaning it doesn't have to be 10.

I actually think we will be a Spring release. About this time last year, Hastings rumoured that the first 4 Primarchs wuold be Magnus, Mortarion RG and Russ. Now 3/4 of that has panned out so I am inclined to think that Russ will be the next Primarch. Moreover, I think that he will take the same spring slot in 2018 that RG took this year. So my bet is going to be SW Codex plus Russ in March-April.

this would make sense as we supposedly have a book release for SW in march/april according to the BL rumors.

I don't think GW cares about releasing codexes and models at the same time anymore. We could very well get a codex in December and a Primarch in the Spring.

Here's my logic behind the releases.

GW says we will get 10 codexes before the end of the year.

The first 4 being SM, CSM, DG, and GK.

They announce 3 before the end of November: Eldar, Guard, and Nids.

That leaves three codexes before the end of the year and not a lot of time.

It is logical that they will have to release 3 codexes at one time.

What three bundle well? BA, DA, and SW.

There is a chance that GW bundles the TS instead of one of the three above. This could allow a delay for one dex to be released with a Primarch in the Spring.

You missed out that GW also announced AdMech in late September/early October so that only leaves 2 more codices for this year.

I am pretty certain we will not be getting BAs, DAs and SWs released as a batch. At most I anticipate only one more power armour release this year (and possibly none).

Out of principle there's a part of me that wants Russ to be released as the last loyal primarch. Only because of the whole wolf-time prophecy thing... I'd rather see the Lion come out first to see how their story unfolds, especially after what was teased during Warzone Fenris and a conclusion to Cypher after RG played him to get to terra. Let everyone's story get flushed out first and have Russ come in to herald the wolf-time or help the other primarchs when all seems lost. RG needs a proper general and the Lion will help in that regard. I'd rather have the wolf king as more of a weapon that will turn the tide in the Great War. As for the codex. No rush. I'd rather have it done right than have it pushed quickly because people are impatient.

Much as I would love to see Russ in 40K, I agree that the Lion seems like a great choice for Primarch #2. Russ would be quite happy to go and off hit things leaving BobbyG running the show. He never had any pretensions about ordering anyone beyond his own Legion about.

The Lion on the other hand always felt slighted about being passed over as Warmaster. He nearly went to war with RG over Imperium Secundus. Now if he wakes up, RG is basically running the show. I can see that creating a lot of interesting tension.

I guess we shall have to wait and see.

In too many books the Lion also feels like the true heir to the Emperor. RG took that by simple regard of being the first primarch back and also wielding his fathers sword which in knighthood is a symbol of power.... I don't think Lion will feel so happy. Also since RG is reinforcing his 500 worlds more than anywhere else, this creates more tension that RG is creating is own empire, something no primarch (and even the humans in 40k) liked except RG.

Knowing GW though they will simply brush this aside like so much other lore and RG will be swiping away the strongest Daemon Primarch single-handed. I really hope Morti smashes RG and Lion or someone has to save his ass. Morti wasn't the best fighter but he still stacks much higher than RG and now with Daemon powers is much stronger.

Now to wait for Ishagu to come and troll the SW forums again... guy had a knack of showing up when RG is mentioned in bad light.

I'm solidly in the "better late than bad" camp. I want GW to slow down and make sure we get quality. I've already forked over cash for an index that is getting errata'd often, and every new codex is showing too many signs of being rushed. Please GW, take the time needed to make the rules work, and by all means make sure you get better/more QA folks (the page reference errors in Codex: CSM are just embarrassing). I would rather be spared the frustration of finally getting our codex, only to fine a product riddled with errors.

Oh danggg. I didn't know about AdMech. Well played. Logic dictates my theory belongs in the toilet

Maybe they do the two chapters that won't be getting their primarch next. The Codexes I don't expect are Orks, Necrons, and Dark Eldar as they list them as candidates to get updates in chapter approved.

I think that GW pretty much has the codex content set to an extent. I don't see any huge changes to our design between now and then. They're not going to release anything because people are getting "impatient". They never have and never will.

Good point about Lion being the more intriguing prospect for next Primarch. Russ is less likely to turn drama inward to the Imperium than a less savory Primarch.

I had a new theory last night, back when FW index came out some people weren't happy Bran Redmaw rules where not updated. My thought is they may already have plans on our Primach having the 2 models and the ability to go full wolf. I think what gives me hope is model veriaty, wouldn't the Lion model just be another big guy holding a big sword?

They should just stick with a digital codex on an app or pdf. Easier to update and correct online.

Once it's finalized through actual gamers play-testing and with FAQ/Errata updates, they can give us a paper copy option that's perfected.

It's silly to publish something in this day and age only to later have it re-worded on an FAQ/Errata when a digital copy can do it quickly. Just update the app or PDF...

Just going off into random speculation here. Someone (alas, I forget who) made a cryptic comment that one of the traitor Primarchs is having regrets whilst one of the loyalist Primarchs will not be welcomed with open arms.

I don't know which Chaos Primarch would be having 2nd thoughts. Magnus seems like an idea since he was basically tricked into turning in the first place but WOM gives no hint of that. Maybe after 10,000 years as a bloated, plague-riddled boil, Mortarion has decided that chucking his lot in with Nurgle might not have been such a bright idea. Maybe Omegon was loyal all along?

But which Loyalist would not be welcomed on their return? How about Russ himself. What if 10,000 years in the eye have left him mutated like a giant Wulfen? He may be pure in spirit but what if his appearance when he returns is so bestial that even RG has difficulty bringing himself to trust him? That might add a bit of interesting tension.

I hope we get a codex by Christmas 2017. It kills me using the same index 1 book for points with no special stratagems or rules while competing against people who happily are using theirs.

I firmly expect Russ to come back. He will either be Wulfenized or some version of Odin. I am fine with either. I keep thinking they will time the release of the SW codex with Russ release like they are doing with Mortarion but I have nothing other than a gut feeling on that.

I'm not to concerned when our new codex is out to tell you the truth having a lot of fun with the current one and winning a lot with it.   also will leman be better than bjorn I doubt it unless his time in the eye of terror has warped him to have  a laser cannon sticking out his head or has a claw for a hand which is a 12 strength. Plus remember with all things GW what the give with one hand they take away with the other so we get might get leman back but I bet the wulfen will get nerfed  a bit because most people complain when they fight against them.

also hope it is after Christmas as trying to explain to someone what to get me for Christmas I can see me ending up with a leman Russ tank instead of the primarch.

That is a fair point. Our Index list is pretty decent. It is reasonably competitive and it is also well balanced in that most of our signature units are fairly playable. We are in a much better place than BAs (my other Marine army).

Yes I would like some shiny relics and stratagems but I don't feel like we are at a massive disadvantage without them.

If they go with a similar template to RG the loyalist primarchs will be force multipliers to the extreme. Imagine if we got a buff aura of reroll all to hit and wounds like RG does. Or additional command points just because.

I don't think we will receive much nerfing. SW's really aren't breaking the competitive environment. Wulfen are good but are tied down by ever-present hordes. If anything I see Wulfen getting a points decrease. Elite units just aren't what they once were. Numbers either in minis or shooting is the name of the game in 8th.

Maybe Father Grimnar will bring seasonal gifts...From my experiences recently I think we're about even with other marine armies, so can't see the nerf hammer landing too hard.

Can we hold a small prayer for our Sisters who will probably get yet another Dex with no new models?

Wulfen can't get nerfed. They need a points decrease. People at my local meta are discovering the same thing: alpha strike on turn one with massive shooting is the way to go in 8th. Wulfen have zero shooting. They only exist for melee. If GW nerfed Wulfen then there's no need to ever attempt to run an assault list with SW. We'd have to be a ghetto shooting army without the tools and abilities that other SM or armies get.
