Help with building out current collection

Hey everyone,

Newb here. Played 40K back in Rogue Trader days. Always meant to get back in and bought some models over the years but never jumped back in until now…. Eighth edition has awoken my Necrons from their *erm* 10-year slumber….

I want to use the models I bought back in the day and I’m hoping to get some advice on future purchases. I won’t be able to buy too much more and want to get things that will fit the theme/playstyle of what I’ve got so far.

Models I’ve got:

  • 40 x warriors
  • 4 x destroyers (plan to convert one to a heavy)
  • 9 x scarabs
  • Lord
  • Monolith

I realize the monolith is considered over-priced for what it does, but I own one and want to use it.

Playstyle-wise, I’m thinking something like a silver tide but with some teleporting in the mix. I was planning to focus on shooting instead of melee-oriented ‘crons.

Here’s some other random stuff that could help with any advice:

  • I’ll be playing smallish casual games for the foreseeable future but would like to get models that synergize well (especially if I keep playing and end up in more competitive settings)
  • I’m primarily a figure painter and less of a gamer so certain models appeal more than others, even if they’re not optimal
  • I prefer the 3rd ed cthulhu-style ancient evil fluff and can’t really get behind the tomb kings in space theme. So I’m not a huge fan of models like the ghost ark and similar.

I’m thinking 10 immortals would be a safe next purchase. They could jump out of the ‘Lith or get teleported by a Deceiver (which I could convert up) or just advance up the field with an overlord.

I realize there’s not a lot of anti-tank or counter-charge in my current collection. For AT, maybe a Stalker? Especially as the to-hit bonus is a decent force multiplier for an infantry-heavy force.

From a modeling perspective, I’m really drawn to the tomb stalker and sentinel. Could either work with what I’ve got? Which bug would be better and why?

Thanks!

A bunch of Immortals and a Stalker would be great additions, I play much the same style of army and haven't been doing too poorly. The only thing Necrons seem to struggle against is multiple high wound/toughness enemies. Infantry's no problem to shred it would seem from my experience but the army, specially when focused on infantry, really struggles if faced with a bunch of Dreadnought/Walker type units at once.

As an aside, the heavy gauss cannons make awesome weapons for heavy destroyer conversions. They also make great weapons for Stalkers...I really wish GW had decent looking Heavy Destroyer models.

When it comes to the FW stuff I'd say Sentinels look better on paper. Looks like they're they same kit, think you could magnetize the important parts for each variant?

You are correct, and hey just noticed these are your fist posts on the forum. Welcome! :tu:

Reinforcements, pg. 177 BRB:

"Units that arrive as reinforcements count as having moved in their Movement phase for all rules purposes, such as shooting Heavy weapons."

Thanks for the welcome!

Great suggestion about magnetizing the FW centipedes. I prefer the pose of the tomb stalker but would likely run it mostly as the sentinel so this solves that issue.

In a small list (say 50 "casual" points) with two 20-man warrior blobs, would you go for a ghost ark OR a triarch stalker if you had to pick only one?

Would probably run it with a cryptek so leaning towards stalker but curious what more seasoned players would do.

I play a Stalker and love it, though I have recently dropped down to four 10 man squads instead of two 20 man squads (always run with a Cryptek). I feel like they're pretty darn durable with the 4+ RP rolls from the Cryptek and don't specifically need the Ghost Ark's buffs quite as much as they need the extra high damage weapons and shooting buffs of the Stalker. As suggested by Pentharian I would think Arks are better used in pairs with units that fit inside of them for Objective grabbing.

I find that I can deal with being charged better by having front and back lines of Warriors around a central Cryptek. Morale is less of an issue and more Warriors get to shoot more often.
