How would you create a 'counts as' army for sqauts?

Hi,

With the times GW keep mentioning squats of late I'm having quite a lot of stunty thoughts

If GW did redo the squats/release the Demiurge I'd be all over it like Matt Ward on bad fluff but until then my only hope is Obi-Wan Kenobi a counts as army. I'll probably never do one but its an entertaining thought

so anyway how would you do squats army, what models would you use, what rules would you use?

Model wise I like the idea of converting the Kharadron Overlords but mantics forge fathers are quite nice

Rules wise I'm thinking marines the basic overlords could be scouts and exo suits could be the new big marines

although the idea of doing a squats counts as sister of battle army could be funny

So what would you do?

Sisters or Guard. If you get some black reach marines they actually look like squats next to modern sculpts, even more so next to Primaris.

If you do guard, have at least one mortar team and shout "MORTAR KOMBAT!!!!"

Definitely Kharadron Overlords, for the simple reason that that some players are sticklers for what consists of "counts-as." Using GW products, even from a different line, is considered a bit more acceptable than say Mantic.

Also, the Overlords look better than the Forgefathers.

My Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus army get called Squats all the time. Have a look at the gallery link (first one) in my signature for conversion Ideas.

Should be even easier to do now that Kharadron Overlords exists.

I've been thinking about getting some Kharadron and with a bit of conversion this and that, I'd run them as Jokaero, in a way calling back to the idea that they are more technically adept than the Imperium at large, but now there's only a small number of them.

If it were me?

For the models, I'd use Squats. The old models pop up on ebay, though they're not cheap. Because of the limited availability and because they're probably going to be missing parts, I'd also be expecting to do be building a lot of things (like arms) out green stuff. I think building the old style flak armor or out green stuff might be relatively easy, and that would create more Squat-building options.

See, I'd want my Squats to look like Squats, rather than any old Dwarves (or Dwarfs) in space. Those AoS airship Overlord guys are *gorgeous* models, but they don't look like Squats.

For the rules, I don't think there's a good fit, which is actually the main reason why I haven't done this. The basic Squat profile was WS4 BS3 S3 T4; their core infantry wore flak while their elite troops wore carapace or terminator equivalent. There just doesn't seem to be a good equivalent.

...I just want Squats to look like Squats and act like Squats.

Failing that, I'd go with a Militarum list, because you get heavy weapons teams and artillary, and infantry in flak with lasguns, and because the Squat army list let you take an embedded Commissar. (The Commissar was an advisor to the Warlord, and had to accompany him. Although, "the Commissar will not shoot any Squat personnel while acting in an advisory role.")

If you play 30k you can make Squats pretty easily using the Imperial Militia list - looking at recent GW though I imagine we may actually see some new Squats in the coming years.

Model wise I would use the Overlords with some ye olde Dwarf heads and lasguns (there are a couple of loose guns in the Cadian and Catachan infantry squads).
