Deathwatch and Chainswords in 8th Ed.

Hello!

So I'm new to 40k and am starting to build some Deathwatch. I've got the new Index and am a little confused about chainswords. Am I allowed to equip a Veteran with both a boltgun and a chainsword? I see them on their equipment list, but I don't see them in any of the DW boxes I've purchased. Would I have to buy the bits separately? I'm looking to keep point costs down with my Vets by not giving some of them power swords. Any insight into this would be great.

Thanks!

You are allowed to give them a bolter and chainsword. My advice would be to get a vanguard veteran box for a load of extra weapons, cool leg poses and other assorted bitz and then just mix and match.

I do not advise this!

The Vanguard set's chainswords are largely right handed...

...just like your boltguns.

Try to find lefty chainswords elsewhere.

Going to pile in on the Mk 3 swords, they have a smaller "sabre" design that speaks of a secondary as opposed to primary armament, which makes sense given DW Veterans tend to pour on SIA firepower before drawing blades for close quarters.  Well, the sensible ones anyway  :P

Black Templar Upgrade sprues have alot of chainswords in both hands and come with a nifty chain around them. The bolters also come with the chains on it. The main downside I'd see is that they can be somewhat difficult to find available, most BT players buying them up as they come in stock.
