Citadel Air

It is pretty thin, but still way too thick to just airbrush out of the pot with the commonly used needle sizes and PSI. Sort of like Stynylrez. Using whatever you thin with should be fine, even water. I just used water for mine because the color I was using was Tallarn Sand for basing, so I didn't care enough to treat it super special.

Yeah it's giving me the hardest time lately. Low, medium and high psi all give me the same "splatter" of paint that is unacceptable, and thinning it hasn't gotten me any better results. I got this with the intention of having smooth even coats on larger models vs. using a brush. And I have had success, but I haven't airbrushed in close to two years so I'm trying to re-learn it all....again.

That depends alot on how much you thinned the paint and also how close you need to be with the airbrush to the painted area. Generally speaking, if you go as low and 10-15 psi, you're thinning your paint very much and shoot very thin lines, otherwise it will spurt, splatter and spider.

Thanks for all the input guys. So if you've seen my other thread I thought maybe my brush was the problem.....well in the process of trying to find the problem I created more problems....

So I did some research and got a Badger Patriot 105, flow improver, and some other odds and ends to keep this brush in tip top shape. I did a test tonight with the same Citadel Air and new stuff, and had no issue at all between 15-18 psi. My last airbrush on that setting felt like someone lightly breathing, but this one still slings paint efficiently.

TL;DR:  broke my last airbrush trying to fix an issue so bought a new system, paint works with flow improver.

I was actually going to start a very similar thread!
Having just got my own set up  (Badger 105 + compressor) I went out and bough a few Citadel air paints (made sense seeing as I use exclusively GW paints with my brushes)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is having problems with the black! The Macragge blue seemed to behave better.
I was playing with on the weekend and noticed it seemed "too thin", I tried various pressures between 25 - 10psi and would get that unwanted splatter....

Will the flow improver help prevent that? I thought flow improver was more for "thicker" paints vs over thinned?

Do the FW paints have similiar issues?
Finally has anyone perchance done a Vallejo / Citadel paint conversion chart? Assuming Vallejo is more forgiving to use.

I've had no issues like before with my new Badger 105. 2 drops of flow improver with some paint has given me happy splatter free results so far.

As far as too thin, I'm not sure. Maybe try mixing it with some regular non citadel air black (in a separate cup/pot) ?

I actually just bought some disposable pipettes.

Which would would you recommend the pipettes, dripper or both?

Is there much a difference between the dripper bottles? There's a lot of choice (and price changes) on Amazon.

The dropper bottles are a godsend. I transfer any paint that's going through my airbrush into them. Do you use funnels to transfer the paint or pipettes?

I bought a cheap ($1.50?) funnel from Harbour Freight here in the USA that fits my dropper bottles perfectly.

I don't know about all of them ... this is the one I bought (I think I got the 15mL size)

They've been working just fine for me

Personly i wouldnt waste money for GW Air colors if i have the color already. They go well through an airbrush when you thin them with Vallejo Airbrush thinner.

Or you could look for colors like Scalecolor which have been designed to use by brush and airbrush, where you wouldnt need matching colors for changing tools.

My advice regarding citadel air ...

Get some dropper bottles and a funnel ... Also ... if you can find a vallejo equivalent I would go with that ... their bottles are 17mL vs citadel 12mL.

$4.25 for 12mL

vs

$3.29 for 17mL and it already comes in a dropper bottle.

Just a protip: you don't actually need a funnel, you just have to pour slowly and carefully. Depending on how thick the paint is, you just have to tilt slower or faster. Of course if you have very shaky hands or tend to spill things a lot, then by all means, get a micro funnel or build your own out of paper or something.

I've had more sucess with Macragge blue than Abaddon Black air.

I've been trying various combinations of thinner and improver through my badger.

Seems like a small amount (ie 1 or 2) drops of improver definitely seems the way to go at least for getting the base coat down.

I haven't tried smaller details at below 16psi yet.

50-50 thinned standard layers worked really well at 15psi on Cawl's robes. I mostly have bases in the air so I can cover large areas quickly but the layers work beautifully as air paints with Vallejo thinner (fun fact, I thought they sucked at first till I realised I'd thinned them with airbrush cleaner rather than thinner...)

  • 2 weeks later...

I was able to shoot some of the citadel air paints through a 0.2mm needle today neat at 18psi without thinner. The dark paints seem to have an easier time of it than the light ones. Mephiston Red didn't spray cleanly but Abaddon black did. I'll keep experimenting.

Yeah I shot some Mephiston red the other day for some AoS stuff. It sprayed well enough with some flow improver, but I did have to clean the tip more frequently than some other colors. Note: This wasnt the Citadel Air version, so I'm curious to try it out soon and see what happens
