Death Guard Music

Let's break in this new sub-forum with some appropriately grisly, dark themes, eh?

 

Background noise whilst painting Mortarion's Legion or epic pieces that capture the heat of battle, whatever might feel appropriate to them.

 

 

Obviously the Souls series are great for grim, haunting, epic soundtracks but I think this one ties in well to the Death Guard, not only in the name of Neat-o, but in that slow, marching theme.

 

 

Anything to do with the Scourge fits the Death Guard well (diseases, green sludge, zombies, death) but the title of this track in particular made it the most appropriate to use here.

I've found that this one song tends to fit quite often with anything 40k. It just sounds appropriate.

 

 

And for a glorious union of classical music, distorted guitars and some synthy goodness, the soundtrack for The End is Nigh. What is it with the Soundtracks for Edmund McMillen's games fitting 40k? I guess it's all the death and despair. And the tumors.

When I think Nurgle, I think despair... there's countless symphonic music that is quite foreboding and dark that fits quite well. On a less classical scale, I've found blackgaze bands like Deafheaven or Alcest (or the aptly named Altar of Plagues) fit the bill too. I've also been finding myself listening to a lot of Dimmu Borgir while painting my Nurgle models, in particular the album Death Cult Armageddon. Symphonic black metal works. I usually slap on a bit o Bolt Thrower myself (always gets me pumped the day ETL starts), though I do like a bit of Skepticism, the old Thorns demo stuff and A Funeral for Crippled Children..

I don't think there's no band which embodies Nurgle and the Death Guard better than Obituary:

 

 

 

They are slow, rotten, dirty, evil, heavy and all their lyrics are about putrefaction, rotting, dying, infection. Even the band members themselves look dirty, unkempt and kind of oozy.

 

Since they were among the founders of death metal and extremely popular in the 80s and early 90s I wouldn't be surprised if GW took inspiration by them for many of the elements in Nurgle. After all the chaos gods are heavily inspired by metal.

Some gothic church bells tolling, some war ambience, maybe some rain, and the buzzing of uncounted flies. Throw in some dirge chanting. Voila. Welcome to the warzone.

I am right there with you. Listening to dark ambient compilations on Youtube can be a real inspiration. Chanting, wind, distorted electromagnetic space noise, rain, the distant cackling of crows... that stuff really sets the tone without interfering with my concentration.
