The How Long Until...

I figured it'd be interesting to make a thread about speculation. There is no evidence behind anything here. There are no rumours here. This is a thread purely devoted to what we think could come out, when, and speculating why, or why not such a thing could happen. I'll start, my dear Chaos Spawn and Cultists.

I'm curious if people think the Great Unclean One will be arriving in as quick an order after Mortarian, as the Lord of Change did after Magnus. I have a lot of reason to think of this. Firstly, last time they did the Silver Tower, which evolved into a general Tzeentch release, which evolved into Thousand Sons, and then eventually spawned the Lord of Change. So I'm wondering if the GUO will be as aggressive of a time table. With Warhammer Quest pushing Nurgle this time, and Mortarian and the Death Guard getting a big release, I wonder if the GUO along with a Warhammer release for them (AoS) is on the horizon before the end of the year, or the beginning of next.

Speculation number 2: I wonder if GW will give Chaos Space Marines anything for their general army. At all, this time around. I don't mean the ability to attach different things like daemons and ect. I mean... no replacement models for some old models. Our most common Super Heavy Option is the Renegade Knight, given that people tend to avoid the dumb looking Khorne Skull tank thing. So its either do heavy conversions, just says its a renegade, or buy the resin Chaos Knight upgrade which looks extremely unique, and doesn't do well flipping over to other Knights.

I'm curious if we'll get Primaris equivalents this edition. I'm really on the fence if I think it'll happen. If it does happen, I think it'd have to happen within 18-24 months, otherwise I think GW would just sit on such a release until the next Chaos Space Marines codex.

I'm pretty sure the Loyalists will get another Primarch next year, probably the first half. Which makes me wonder if we'll get another Chaos Primarch shortly after. I am also curious as to who people think will be next.

It's likely gotta be Angron, or Fulgrim. Maybe an outside chance of Lorgar given he was mentioned as being active in the Chaos Codex. I think it'll depend on the next Warhammer Quest update, and if they do Slaanesh or Khorne. But that's just wild speculation on my part.

Anyway. That was my random bobble for the evening.

  • I'd bet on a new GUO/beasts with random AoS stuff by January latest. The new beasts art in the DG codex basically confirms they're coming. People have hypothesised that the GUO will be a dual kit with Ku'gath, which seems plausible.
  • I honestly don't see any new vanilla CSM releases coming anytime soon (next ~18 months). I expect cult legions will remain the focus for the foreseeable future.
  • Primaris equivalents will undoubtedly happen, but probably not for a while.

I've been thinking a lot about the next Traitor Primarch. GW have said that DG went into development in late 2015, so there was nearly a two year turn around between starting the design and the release date. Thousand Sons and Death Guard were reasonably close together (nearly a year apart in terms of release, but we saw DG previewed back in March so we knew early on), so maybe they are intent on pumping out more Legions at a rate of one a year. I certainly hope so!

Lorgar and Perturabo will come eventually, but I think the next is likely to be Angron. Armageddon has been mentioned a lot in the rulebook, with a failed attempt to re-summon Angron, and there was talk - whether substantiated or not I have no idea - of some kind of broader Armageddon themed campaign/release. Doing Angron and his World Eaters would fit in nicely here with a return to their old stomping ground.

What I really want though is for Fulgrim to be next. Personal preference mainly down to the fact that Noise Marines have always been my favourite cult unit, and FW's 30k range for EC is stunning. Lots of potential for them in 40k. This could work especially well as for some (stupid/bizarre) reason Slaanesh is 'missing' in AoS. They could do a big event where Slaanesh returns to Sigmar with a new KoS etc, and then link that up with an Emperor's Children release headlined by Fulgrim. I desperately want to see what kind of models they could do for the EC, with Sonic Cult Terminators etc hopefully being lined up. So much potential there.

Fulgrim also featured in the third Gathering Storm book, where he spoke to Guilliman, so he's actually had more attention than Angron has in recent 40k books, perhaps hinting that he's going to be next, just as many of us took Mortarion being referenced in the Wrath of Magnus book to be a sign he was coming. Whether or not it was intended as such, it eventuated. It's just as possible though that GW will continue to ignore Slaanesh.

Outside choice: Lorgar is mentioned as active in the CSM codex as you said, but so was Perturabo, and in the Death Guard codex there is a sizeable entry on the timeline talking about a massive battle between Perturabo and Mortarion, along with their respective Legions. So perhaps Perturabo could be in the running.

I have a theory that Emperor's Children and Fulgrim will be done before World Eaters and Angron, purely based on there being fewer gaps in GW's Khorne range than their Slaaneshi one. After all there is plenty ty of Khorne models for AoS and the Bloodthirster is done, and ancient as they are there are plastic Bezerkers. Slaanesh clearly isn't going away with the Daemons having recently got a start collecting box and the Noise Marines are currently a hybrid kit, so seem more ripe for replacement. I can also see a more old school and flamboyant approach being taken with them compared to the slightly more austere version based on the plastic CSM models. It's just a hunch mind you.

I am curios if and when codexes for World Eaters and Emperor's Children are released. I get the point why Death Guard and Thousand Sons get their own right now, but I don't see any reasons why they the other two cult legions shouldn't get one too in time. Khorne is a bit better developed model wise with AoS and Greater Daemon, so could be quicker to make because they don't need many new models, but I think Slaanesh/ Emperor's Children deserve it more. Afaik Slaanesh is currently "lost" in AoS, so a big release with Slaanesh mortals reappearing with new models and new Keeper of Secret and EC getting their own codex in Warhammer 40k could be a thing, a bit like Thousand Sons.

Here's how I think the release timeline's gonna go:

  • 3-5 months from now: Russ or Lion with their respective Chapter's Codex
  • 10~ months from now: Fulgrim and the Emperor's Children
  • 3-5 months from the Emperor's Children's release: Russ or Lion again, whoever didn't come first
  • 10~ months from the Emperor's Children's release: Angron and the World Eaters
  • 3-5 months from the World Eaters' release: Another loyalist Primarch, bets are on Vulkan
  • Some time after Vulkan: Undivided CSM release featuring Abaddon, Lorgar and Perturabo. Vanilla CSM range gets updated.
  • Some time after CSM update: The remaining loyalist Primarchs are released so it's a 6v6 Primarch Rumble. Maybe even a 7v7 if Abaddon gets a "level up" and/or Dorn is indeed still alive.

It's a rough estimate based on release times between Thousand sons, Guilliman and the Death Guard, some context with other releases, some preference bias about order and a lot of assumptions, so take it with Dead Sea levels of salt. For now I do trust my interpretation of the timing though, at least until they start throwing curveballs at us like Prime-Orks, maybe a new Avatar of Khaine, or other "Primarch-level" releases that deserve their place in the big release timeline.

About the last two, since I don't expect Iron Warriors and Word Bearers to get the sub-faction treatment, I assume that IF they get models, they'll get them along with the CSM range facelift. Maybe they'll keep doing the "one traitor, one loyalist" releases, but over a shorter amount of time, instead of releasing three big models for the same faction at the same time. But then again, Triumvirates.

The only AoS Chaos God who's not had a book yet is Slaanesh, right? If they're following the trend of '40k Legion release leads into Daemons for AoS' trend it would stand to reason that the Emperor's Children are next. Him having a showdown with Gulliman would also round off Robby's story before more of the loyalist Primarchs return to take more of the spotlight. Plus it's inevitable we're going to be seeing more of the Elves in AoS soon and their story is very heavily tied to Slaanesh as an adversary (imprisoned or otherwise). Edited by Lord Marshal

Dunno, that sounds like a pretty tight release schedule for 40k considering all the new models, building hype, potential campaigns and whatnot. Keep in mind that there's still AoS which was basically mostly paused while we got the switch to 8th plus Primaris and Death Guard releases.

I think we can expect the releases to be a bit further apart from eachother once the new year begins so GW can give the AoS community some love again as well.

Anyway. That was my random bobble for the evening.

Im largely with Marshall.

The GUO will likely eventually come with AoS' Rotbringer's of Nurgle Battletome. As we have not seen any video on that (and videos seem to indicate new models) we can be quite certain that it will not happen this year. Also because AoS will soon recieve a Undead update first and whatever is after that is unknown to us.

I think that eventually Chaos will recieve Primaris-like Chaos Space Marines too but I don't think it's anytime soon. What we see is that they have focused onto a particular cult instead of allround Chaos. If we thake a peek into AoS again we saw that from the start Khorne Mortals/Bloodbound recieved a lot of great new models there. I believe Death Guard to essentially have the same mantle in 40K Chaos for now.

I too think that Space Marines will recieve their second Primarch somewhere next year. I also think that after the Death Guard Chaos will not suddenly be spoiled with many more releases. GW has treated Chaos like all the other non-Space Marine factions for years and I doubt this will suddenly change.

One of the things I feel is very important to keep in mind is that GW can create books crazy fast for sure, however this isn't true for the models so despite the many released GW has given us in the last year I personally don't see them suddenly focus as much on Chaos as they do for Space Marines. A reason for this is also that now more than ever GW shows that they do want to give Chaos the character they need to have from a narrative standpoint. The downside of this is that Nurgle releases, unlike say Primaris, cannot or will not be put into any Chaos Space Marines army as opposed to Primaris being a very good deal for ANY Space Marines army.

Both Nurgle and Slaanesh do not have their own books. However AoS Chaos is a bit more than that too. So if we're really talking AoS Chaos as a whole then Skaven have not recieved their complete book nor has Slaves to Darkness (previously Chaos Warriors).

I do think Emperor's Children is the likely next contender of a Chaos Space Marine army update but at the same time I do not expect this to be happening any time soon. As sfPanzer also said, there is a LOT of armies to cover and GW has allready given a LOT to Chaos when you factor in all the new models and boxes for Death Guard.

I expect world eaters before Emperor's Children.  They have to break the pattern regardless, since their AoS & daemon stuff is already out, and the Khârn model is just kind of dangling in the wind on its lonesome right now.

I don't expect either this year, or even early next year.  If they were on the short list, they wouldn't have been in the CSM codex.

Given that the Christmas Triad is BA/DA/SW I think the Loyal primarch will be The Lion or Russ.

Wasn't that the rumour that also claimed there would be no Xeno Codices this year and was officially shot down by GW by announcing Nids and Eldar?

It still stands! Mark my words. By the end of this year, not one Xenos book will be release.

Tyranids and Eldar are imperial citizens. You see. And hence...

1. I think GUO is close, maybe a Beast of Nurgle?

2. I think we'll get Khorne before Slaanesh. Berzerkers to fit Khârn's aesthetic, likely some Cult Terminators, maybe some Flesh Hounds. Not too familiar with the rest, but what other daemons do they have that need an upgrade? However, I'm not convinced by my own arguments - Fulgrim (or someone whom looks like him) was mentioned in the Eldar Triumvirate fluff, IIRC. The Four know Slaanesh needs an upgrade too, which could link with an Eldar release (the Eldar have the oldest miniatures still in use, I think, predating Abaddon and Fabius by 2-3 years). So, either we get Angron or Fulgrim, as GW's focus is on Cult, not what once was Undivided. My hangup here is Slaanesh needs a re-envisioning to make She Who Thirsts more palatable to a wider audience, but they may already have done that.

3. I'll only be a little surprised if we don't get a multipart Havoc set, a Mutilator/Obliterator set, and a new Abaddon and Fabius at some point in the next year or two. Only slightly mind, I still wouldn't count on it.

Of the Traitor Primarchs to be released in 40k, I think Alpharius will be the last. Fulgrim/Angron, followed by Lorgar or Mortarion, then Alpharius (if at all). I expect us to get Alpharius purely to match the number of Loyalist Primarchs. Of the Loyalists, I'm with the rest on it being the Lion or Russ, then Dorn/Corax/Vulkan, with the Khan probably last.

My bet is we'll see the Legions done (so WE/ EC), with AoS releases just before/ after - though Khorne is probably set at this point, just needs a 40k book.

Then eventually we'll see a Primaris Chaos Marine which will just be Fabius getting his act together and making the "normal" line into 2W guys with new chaosy trademarkable weapons. Will be focused around Black Legion and the other "vanilla" traitors with a character for each perhaps, but most likely just Abaddon and Fabius.

I don't think we'll see any new undivided stuff until after all four cults. 2019 at the earliest.

I'm not that bothered with new stuff but I wouldn't mind some kit refreshes.

I don't think we'll ever see refreshes for existing plastic kits, with the exception of berzerkers, and (if you even count them as a kit) noise marines.  I don't think we will ever see new bikes, new havocs, new basic chaos marines, or so on.  No, we'll get TS/DG style releases for World Eaters and Emperor's children (but not this year, or else they wouldn't have been in the CSM book), and after that we'll see undivided chaos get releases again, but, with the exception of new models for the special characters and maybe muties/oblits, they won't be new models for old units, because GW mostly just doesn't do that.  No, they'll be entirely new units - mostly likely a chaos counterpart to primaris marines.

That's certainly a fear. I can get by with MkIV and MkIII armor for the time being but I'd like some new spiky bits for my power armor dudes.

I agree with wholeheartedly. I doubt we'll get new kits to replace the old ones, but I hope we do.

But that's why SMs are just CSMs whom have traded their spikes for training wheels ;) We do things the hard way!

I don't necessarily mean it as a good or a bad thing.  I'd love new basic CSM models, but I'd love new, bigger, true scale units as much if not more.  I would love to see Chaos Primaris - so long as they're properly chaotic, in the vein of the Dark Vengeance chosen & lord.

I just hope that we don't get /direct/ counterparts of all the primaris stuff.  For instance, I hope they don't give us chaos gravis armor or chaos repulsor tanks.  I would rather our truescale big guys stay in some new variant of bigger/mutated terminator armor (maybe a tri-kit with plastic oblits & mutilators?), and would rather have some unique chaos vehicle rather than a repulsor packaged with a sprue of fence spikes.

We'll see, I guess.  Not any time soon, though, so I'm not getting worked up about it.
