Deployment of the Spectral Sicarii (homebrew RG)

Took some time off from a little burnout and got right back on the failure train with my airbrush and power swords. I think it's good to share failures as well as successes. I spoke to some folks and got some advice so I'll try again in a few days. I think I'm going to practice on something disposable so I can try some flow improver and PSI changes and test results.

  • 3 weeks later...

After a two week hiatus I got a brush in hand tonight. I decided to start working on my contemptor for a change of pace. I'm at a standstill with my librarians as it is. Getting this model done should hopefully help me with my AT woes since I tend to struggle with that in larger games.

Las arms are 'third party' because FW was out of stock. I picked up twin auto cannons also but those are going to need some work to clean up, but you get what you pay for. The las cannons cleaned up nicely and I wanted to get them painted first since I seriously need more than one unit of AT in my lists.

Think I found out how to get the blue on my contemptor but have it stand out as a relic. Vallejo Gunmetal blue with a steel/silver highlight. I need to lightly wash it but I like what I see. I'm going to do this on the knees and shoulders of the model, and I'll see how I can get this translated over to my venerable as well since that technically doesn't have any knees that are going to be painted.

So I don't have many places to share this since I don't do a lot of social media and it's still on the down low but I'm bursting at the seams so I think I can get away with it here.

Got an offer for a new job! :teehee: :biggrin.:

I am so excited right now. Official offer came in today and paperwork is being pushed around. Literally everything about this job is an improvement from my current one with the exception of the commute (15 minutes more each way) but that just means more time to listen to podcasts

I feel I can skirt the off-topic rules because this ties into the hobby via means of more money, which means more frequent hobby purchases if I want. What I'm actually hoping to do is get an army up and running and making it out to Adepticon or LVO in the next year or two. I have tons of online friends who I'd love to meet in person at one of those events and I now will be able to make that a reality if I want.

That would be really cool! I don't know if I'll have an army to play but I could absolutely do some Kill Team and other systems up there if I make it.

A B&C meetup would be neat. This job may actually send me to Chicago for training at some point, if dates lined up that would be pretty sweet because then my airfare is covered.

Finished the legs and base for my contemptor and got them attached. I'll work on the torso next. This base is heavy since I had to use two layers of clay for the step. I don't think I'll need to worry about him ever tipping over on the battlefield.

Torso is almost done, shoulders are done. I need to do the eyes and wash the two icons near the banner and it'll be done. Eventually I'll put something on the banner but I don't trust my free hand, nor do I know what I want to write on there. I'll probably ditch the brushes and go for the super fine .5mm ink pens when I do figure out what I want to write.

I hate the marine head on that model. It’s just lazy model design in my opinion, but dang he’s gonna look good with his Primaris brethren :)

Good call on he ink pens. I’ve had varied success with them before depending on the brand, but it’s best way to go for banners like that imo.

Yes, FW does do the heads right, but having it be the half head and that wall behind it is really 'meh'.

I built this when I first got into the hobby. If I were to start it now I'd probably see about hollowing that out but oh well. From 3 feet away all people are going to see is two twin las cannons and their 48" threat range.

Tried something different lighting with a dark background. I think my first hobby purchase with my new job is going to be a proper light box setup.

Contemptor is done aside from transfers and whatever name goes on the scroll work. Very excited to have this Mortis brother added to the fold. My devastators need the help and for only a couple points more it's got more wounds, moves faster, hits better, and has a 5+ invuln.

Speaking of transfers I think I finally figured out what I want their dagger iconography to look like. I'd never paid much attention to the Legion Praetor Tribune in Tartaros Terminator Armour (probably because it takes so long to say) but I saw a TITH post of one and the blade really stood out to me.

I love the shape of the blade so I'll be adopting that. I'll find someone to draw that, give it a good hilt, and then I'll get it printed up so I can start applying transfers. Scaled down I think it'll make a great knife and I'm very happy to have that piece figured out.

Been thinking today what I should do next... any suggestions on what unit I should finish up?

Here's what I've got to choose from

2 Intecessors & 3 reivers to fill out Kill team units into two combat squads of primaris

5 man hellblaster squad

15 tactical marines (couple special and heavy weapons in there)

Land Raider (auto-vote for Race)

Primaris Ancient

Venerable Dreadnought

Captain in Phobos

LT in Phobos

On sprue - Scout squad (actually leaning towards these).

The above is all primed but I'm leaning towards my bolter scouts because my camo cloaks for the Vanguard are waiting on testing. I want to try and use my roller with greenstuff to make capes that mimic my bases to give a camo effect. I was thinking of buying a box of sniper scouts to work with but now that Eliminators are a thing I don't know if I want to do any sniper scouts. Bolter scouts would be cheaper to field so I could build them up and make camo cloaks for them.

Does anyone see scout snipers having a place with Eliminators existing now? A 3 man squad of Eliminators seems better in every way, except for 2 less shots. They're a little cheaper, have weapon options at the same strength, and have one more wound. I guess in lower point games having sniper scouts to fill out a troop slot helps in a Battalion but I can't really see any other upside to them.

Decided I needed to build to get a break from painting so scout squad it is. I did some light kit bashing and converting because the models are terrible and the arms don't line up...ever. I clipped the shotguns off the arms and added some 30k bolters. I had a cut up sniper rifle left over from my Comms specialist so I made that into special bolt rifle for my Sgt because I want him to stand out. I made the mistake of my RG bolter scouts not having a distinguishable Sgt. Knifes and chainsword are there because rule of cool as I'll run these guys with bolt guns. I need to source some heads form them and am leaning towards scions but I want to see what else is out there, as long as they're helmeted. No faces in this army.

Attempted to do meaningful work with greenstuff for the first time tonight. I have an idea for camo cloaks that I want to try and execute. I rolled out some GS and used my rolling pin on the bottom half of the cloak. My plan is to paint the textured half like my bases and transition to a cloak at the top to show the camo effect happening.

It's long and possibly to thin. I plan on seeing how it holds up tomorrow after a night of curing and I'll trim it shorter.

So am I. My fear is the base pattern seems like it's scaled up too large for the models, especially because these will be 25mm bases.

Speaking of bases I tried to make some last night but my clay was dried out. I've heard good things about a product called Sculpy and am going to pick some up next time I'm in town.

I can't recall your current clay selection, but I seem to recall it being air-dry. Keep in mind most Sculpey products need to be baked in an oven to cure (I think most at around 275F). I'm not sure what temp citadel bases melt at, but a quick google search says ABS Plastic melts at 221F.

Of course you could always bake the "top" layer and attach with glue - but they can warp/shrink. (Also subject to cracking)

I common technique to help them bake evenly is to bake them in a heatsink (I think a tub of baking soda is a common tactic).

P.S. I love the sergeants carbine-looking rifle!

Thanks for the advice, I'm aware it does require baking. I'm hoping it's a little more resilient when baked. I have concerns about the air-dry clay over time.

I was planning on backing it off base and gluing it to the plastic, like I do right now. A podcast I listen too speaks very highly of the product which is why I want to give it a shot. Another concern I have is baking sheets warping when they get hot and I don't have a pizza stone. I'm thinking that given their size I can place each base on an upside down cupcake pan since that won't warp. It'll be a fun experiment to learn some new hobby skills!
