Multi Chapter All Dreadnought Army

Hello everyone :smile.:

Having got back into the hobby a while ago, thanks to 8th Ed, I've been tearing it up with Tyranids in my local gaming group (West Coast Gamers) and been having a blast so far.

Up until I stopped playing I played Blood Angels and started collecting for an Iron Hands mech/dread list. I have always liked the idea of running as many Dreadnoughts as possible, or even an army of nothing but, though it hasn't really been possible until now. The reason I say it's "multi chapter" is because both SW and BA have access to unique Dreads as well as HQ Dreads, which will add a lot of different styles and variation.

I am not clued up about FW or the new Dread variations though 1d4 Chan has been giving me some insight into the FW side of things as well as giving me an idea of what is good and bad Dread-wise. Both Bjorn and the BA Libby dreads seem like solid choices, though the unique BA variants seem over-costed for what they do (according to Chan). While the SW Ven. Axe + Shield dreads seem really awesome (thematically, at least)!

My vision is to take a Vanguard Detachment for each chapter with unique Dreadnoughts - SM, BA and SW so far, I don't know if DA or GK have unique dreads though I guess checking them out on 1d4 would enlighten me - maybe other chapters have unique Dreads as well? For now, though, sticking with 3 should give me plenty of scope and 12 Dreadnoughts to play with. Will add FW as well as it will be needed for the Chaplain Dread and maybe a couple of those Dreaded pods would not be a bad idea.

At the moment I have:

2 Furioso's

Death Company Dread

2 Ironclads

TLLC + ML

AC + DCCW

MM + DCCW

I think it's a really cool idea, maybe it won't be the most competitive but it will surely be fun to play! Thematically, it would maybe look something like:

Bjorn + 2 'bodyguards' march up the table

Libby + 2 'bodyguards' march up the table

Chaplin + 2 'bodyguards' march up the table

3 Dreads providing a firebase, maybe 2 vens with quad autocannons and 1 w/ TLLC and DCCW to counter assault stuff

So... that's my idea for running a pure Dreadnought army. What do you think? Viable or trash?

I think it may struggle against mass hordes, how could you counter that? Most dreadnoughts have access to some anti-horde weapons but will it be enough?

If I was to include a couple of FW Pods, which dreads should go in them? I thought the IC but with HB, if I took them, they might be better on the table to provide a T8 distraction?

EDIT

So it seems GK do have access to some pretty cool Dreadnought options, as well as Dreadknights. Could take a Grand Master in Dreadknight armour as an HQ, so there's definitely potential their. DA's don't seem to have anything unique in the Dread department store, but maybe I have enough on the shopping list already!

Also looked at SoB (which I completely forgot about) and they have Penitent engines, not quite a Dread but close enough, though they don't have access to any dreadnought-style HQ's, which is a shame.

We used to have Inquisitor Karamazov and his dreadnought turned walking laz-e-boy called the Throne of Judgment.  Sadly the Inquisition and the Sisterhood are currently having a spat and have decided to take their off again on again relationship into an 'off again' period for awhile (a totally mutual decision, of course).  ;)

Lets's hope they can settle their differences and bring Judgment to the foes of the Emperor. They are, in theory, if not in ideals, on the same side! You'd think they could at least forget about their differences for the good of mankind, guess we'll have to wait and see.

Having a slight re-think as I don't want to get into FW stuff, it's not that I don't want to, it's more that I can't because I'm not as minted as some other peeps out there. Or maybe I'm just not dedicated enough?

Considering the SM codex has no Dreadnought HQ's or special characters but has dreadnoughts that I want, ie the Ironclads and used-to-be FW dreads, I'm still going to need a detachment. Luckily, I can still use Tactical "Dreadnought" Armour and handily have a rather nice Librarian in TDA conversion that I made when collecting for my IH project. I can use him and a unit of Cataphractii Terminators. Breaks the theme up a bit but I think it is an acceptable compromise, it's only one unit.

Been looking at Grey Knights a bit more in depth and they have teleporting dreadnoughts! And venerable dreadnoughts as well, that can teleport! Was resigned to the fact I would have to foot slog all my dreads up the board but teleporting dreads adds more tactical options, could potentially be an effective combo when combined with the Terminators. The Grand Master in Dreadknight Armour, a couple of normal dreads, and a venerable dread would be a splendid addition! They also have access to some really useful psychic powers to add even more variety.
