Focslain's Sisyphus Challenge - Hobby Plog (ETL Update)

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

So decided to try and do a plog here. Of all my hobbies 40K has the biggest and longest hold on my interest. Been playing since '97 and sunk almost as much money as the value of my house into it. With the Konor Campaign getting me back into the painting mood in a large way I'd like to keep a little of this momentum and see about completing the herculean task of painting all my models to table standard.

Course this won't happen, as in time new projects will be added and going back to add detail, but to get close would be a feat. Since my collection extents to most armies I figured it would be best to place the thread here since I want to have the project centralized.

I'm going to also try and get back into writing. It's been a long time since I spun a yarn and like to get creative on all fronts.

If I can keep this up I'm hoping to update this thread on at least a weekly bases with WIP, completed projects, fiction and maybe some battle reports. I'll also try and keep a general list of what I plan to work on in the next three months.

Quarterly Project List:
Finish primaris force to table standard or better
Work on vow for Xenos event.
Complete at least one more IG tank

As a start I'm going to do a few posts of the work done for the Konor campaign as well as group pictures of the forces I used fighting the forces of Chaos. First up is the Imperial force used during week four and my first time using Primaris Marines.

konor week 4

Week 4 (100 PL force)
Captain Phelian (Ultramarines)
Librarian Marcelo Tito (Crimson Fists)
Brother Kleopas (Ultramarines Redepemtor Dread)
Squad Xandros (Ultramarines, Incessors squad)
Squad Rhouben (Ultramarines, Incessors squad)
Squad Stelios (Blood Ravens, Tactical squad)
Squad Ormr (Mantis Warriors, Helbalster squad)
Thunderbolt
Baneblade

I'll post up more as I get the space marine units named.

Just a minor update, below are the few more primaris I'm working on. It's the front half of a helblaster squad to go with the ones from the dark imperium set, five more incessors and a chaplain.

WIP1

The helblasters and incessors are going to the Ultramarines 5th while the Chaplin will be painted in Malifactor colours. I have half a box of Reivers still so going to do those with jump packs to join him when ready.

Over the next three months I'll be mostly working on the Xenos event stuff. But will still drop in other factions as I shift focus over time.

Also need to work on my camera work. Any suggestions will be accepted.

So here is the front half of a helblaster squad and some incessors I got table ready.

20171004 224022 806x605[1]

20171004 224148 806x605[1]

I'm going to be working on the two community events for the next few months, which I'll post WIPs of them here. Links to my vows: IFEV and Xenos

Also there is a Shadow war campaign starting up in my area to which after the success of my grey knight team in the last one I'm going to be building a Tyranid warrior team. So there is that to look forward to seeing as well.

So here is a test mini for my Imperial Fist squad I'm doing for the expansion event. A little more and I think I got the basics down so I can work on the rest.

20171015 172400 2016x1512[1]

20171015 172413 2016x1512[1]

Also I got the gun rig from the Xenos event table ready.

PhotoPictureResizer 171015 172601120 1008x756[1]

I started to piece together the eldar starter box. Next time I do a falcon I have to remember that the main tanks have extra parts in the main kit. I should be priming them and getting to work next week.

the Imperial Fist is off to a good start. :tu: May I suggest either a brown (Agrax Earthshade) or sepia (Seraphim Sepia) wash? It would give some depth to the rather flat-looking armour you have for the moment and really make the model "pop".

Once I paint the chapter symbol and the squad marking (devastator) I have some nulian oil waiting, or you think that is too dark. Not going to ink until the squad is done.

Also...

So here is a story based on a quick game of Shadow War I did recently. Quick in that it lasted two turns. This was also the start of a new campaign, I played Tyranid Warriors while my opponent was playing wolf scouts. The forces were as follows:

Tyranid Team

Leader beast – pair of scything talons x2, adrenal glands, extended carapace

New spawn – pair of scything talons x2, chitin carapace

Gun beast – pair of scything talons, devourer, chitin carapace

Gun beast – pair of scything talons, devourer, chitin carapace

Space Wolf Scout Team (From what I saw and he used)

Sergant (Sigird) – bolt pistol, combat knife, scout armour

Scout (Ulf) – combat shotgun, scout armour

Scout (Harald) – combat shotgun, scout armour

Scout (Eirik) – combat shotgun, scout armour

Scout (Arne) – sniper rifle, scout armour

Scout Specialist (Vidar) – Flamer, combat knife, scout armour

Mission: Kill Team

Specials: Tyranids – Lightning Strike, Space Wolves – Lightning Strike (Oh boy was it)

(Currently this is the first draft, will full print once ok’d by my opponent)

Sigurd cursed under his breath, the thick smoke and fog of the promethium hab didn’t help in visibility and with dusk approaching fast it was only going to get worse. His eyes took into what light they could, more than your average human as astartes senses were more acute then most of the habitants of this war-torn hell hole. His squad was tasked with helping in securing and protecting this sector of the hive. There hasn’t been an ork sighting in a while, but the recent reports have given up something that seemed far worse.

Workers in the area have spotted large shadows moving around the area at night and in the twilight hours. Several have gone missing and while the overseers are blaming it on frayed nerves and laziness, Sigurd’s commander thought otherwise. His team was dispatched to give the local populace some solace that they were protected from the monsters in the shadows. With this being Armageddon, orks were natural to blame, their everywhere, a plague to the planet even after their main force left for other sport across the galaxy. Orks were loud and brutish creatures, not known for stealth and speed to the degree the reports were stating. Sigurd had dealt with the ork group known as Kommandos before, stealthy and quick for their kind, but not like this.

Arne was in the middle of their formation, monitoring the area via his motion sensor. He signaled the group to stop and spoke via sub-vox.

+Sigurd, I have four possible contacts, they’re in two groups of two just ahead+

Sigurd nodded and gave his orders, +Arne take Harald and Eirik to the left, get into position to cover our advance.+

The three scouts moved with precision towards a ruined building while Sigurd took the rest of the team into the cover of a group of cargo containers. They seems to have caught their prey near some promethium storage tanks. The steam from the machines and pipes plus all the other particulates made seeing anything in detail near impossible. Sigurd had seen Arne’s screen prior to separating and it looked like the targets were behind two of the tanks.

+One from each group is moving to intercept, ready for contact+ Arne sub-voxed as he readied his rifle. He spotted movement with his own eyes, Harald and Eirik flanked further left and around the building ruins. A large shadow darts from the tank to some pipping for cover, but it’s close enough for the scouts to see what they were tracking.

“Tyranid warrior?!” Harald quickly open fire on the creature, the pipping hid most of its’ large frame, but between the shotguns and Arne adding in fire it seemed that they had wounded the beast. But this wounded beast did not take flight, instead it moved quickly towards the scouts, closing the gap with frightening speed. It leapt upon Harald slashing with rapid strikes of its’ four sword length talons. Harald went down trying to block the strikes but taking a few blows before hitting the ground.

With eerie coordination a small mass flew past the towering warrior to hit Arne before he could take full cover. He dropped to the ground trying to pull whatever had hit him from burrowing deep into his neck and ears. He didn’t have time to warn Sigurd of the ranged beast, but he didn’t need to. A few meters away, Vidar narrowed his eyes as he saw movement in the fog. A large shadow, taller than an astartes, even the new primaris ones, moved from cover to cover. Then the space between him and Ulf was filled with flying bio-matter. Vidar was hit by two masses, taking him off his feet while Ulf was spun round by the force of a glancing blow. He ducked down and readied his shotgun. Sigurd can hear the gallop of something large just past the line containers that granted him cover from the bio-mass barrage and his comm rang with the sounds of battle from the other team. At count half his team was wounded and if his eyes and ears were not playing tricks all four of the contact were warrior beasts.

+Fall back, all of you, fall back!+ they had walked into a trap and he wasn’t losing anymore of his brothers if he could help it. Vidar laid still on the ground as Sigurd moved and grabbed Ulf by the shoulder, “Move!” They would pull back and regroup, then come back for Vidar’s body if they could. As they pulled back Sigurd heard the beast give a shriek in triumph. Soon that shriek will spell the final sound those creatures would make if Sigurd had any say in the matter.

------------------------------

“Warrior beasts, frakking warriors!” Sigurd gritted his teeth, orks were one thing, Tyranids were far worse. A genestealer would be something that could be dealt with, but a warrior beast meant that a hive ship was somewhere in system and other xenos race had a foothold on the bloody planet. He growled as he looked over his team, “We’ll send a report, give area command the warning. But lads, we will need to find their nest and do as much damage as possible. Warriors means that there should be a hive node somewhere nearby. Definitely a breeding pool, so you all ready to exterminate a bug infestation?”

The others gave a howl and readied their weapons, “For the Russ, the All Father and for Vidar”

“You singing my final ballad already, Sigurd you old dog, I’m not done just yet.”

From the darkness appeared the bulk of Vidar, he gave the group a smirk as he rested the flamer on his shoulder.

“Vidar, How?” Ulf looked at him with suspicion. Vidar chuckled, “You think a little worm can take me out?” he gave out a roguish laugh and showed the side of his face. The left side of his face and neck were a scared mess of partial cooked flesh, his pack and armour also showed signs of acid and fire damage. “Had to stun the bugger with a little heat, but got him out. Guess we both did a number on my comms too.”

-----------------------

In the darkness of the underhive, the beasts gather. The largest of the four works it’s limbs, the holes in its’ chitin slowly seal up as it snaps at a smaller beast. There is a shriek as another beast strokes its’ gun like organism, the central mass swollen and leaking fluid. With a roar and the sound of cracking bone and muscle the organism changes shape, extending its’ form and growing larger before solidify into a massive weapon. The beast makes a chirring sound before clearing the newly formed passages as it lobes hard crystalline shards near the smaller beast. Shrieks and growls roll down the dark passage ways.

@Honda - I'll be picking up a brown wash later before I finish them.

On that I have been doing a little work on the two community projects.

Xenos - I have pieced together the Eldar starter (old version) box and it's ready for priming, which I should get to sunday.

IF Expansion - I realized I forgot to prime up a few backpacks and bolters for the extra troopers, so will add that to the pile this weekend. But the rest are coming along.

IF WIP2

Also did some work on the Ancient from the Dark Imperium set, his the last model I need to finish before tomorrow when I have a game featuring the forces from the 8th edition starter and the armies me and a friend built around them (ie my UM 5th and Konor force)

Ancient WIP

I'll be hanging at my FLGS during their ExtraLife Marathon, I have lined up four games for that day.
Nids vs Chaos Marines in Shadow War first thing in the morning. An Ultramarines vs Orks in a 50 PL skirmish later that morning. Imperium vs Eldar in an 8K Apoc battle later that evening. I'll be fielding about 4K in AM tanks with two friends bring a mix of Ad Mech and Deathwatch. Followed by Dark Imperium Evolved, a game of unknown PL (looking at just under 200) with the forces of the 8th edition starter being the core, so Primaris vs Nurgle.

I'll try and remember pictures of these and any other bouts during the event.

So I managed to get in three of the four games planned for ExtraLife. I was requested to help with a DnD game by the store owner (and my opponent) for the event.

Killteam - Nids vs Chaos Marines

Nids team
Leader beast - Scything Talons x2, adrenal glands, extended carapace, +1 WS advance
New Beast - Scything Talons x2, Adrenal glands
Gun Beast - Scything Talons, Extened Carapace, Vemon cannon
Gun Beast - Scything Talons, Devourer
Spec Op - Ravener - Scything Talons x3, devourer

Chaos Team (all with mark of Nurgle)
Aspiring Champion - bolt pistol, assault blade
Chaos Marine - Bolter, knife
Chaos Marine - Bolter, knife
Chaos Marine - Bolter, telescopic sight, knife
Chaos Gunner - Plasma gun, knife
Chaos Gunner - Plasma gun, knife

Mission - Scavengers, 6 loot counters

Promithium Sprawl - (-1 LD) and all quiet

So the promithium was spread out evenly across the board. I got the option for selecting sides and did so in a way the denied both of us buildings in our deployment zones.  He had deployed his team in three teams of two across the board. I took a chance and borrowed the Ravener within striking distance of one of his plasma gunners. The rest of my force was paired off with the leader and new beast placed in a ruined plaza with my gunners starting in cover farther down the board.

I got first turn and we were off. The Ravener charged the gunner and his champion, grabbing a loot counter on the way. My close combat pair ran forward, the new beast almost picking up a loot counter. My Gun beast moved forward for a better shot at his other gunner, the devourer taking one loot and moving towards another.

The venom cannon did it's job and pinned the plasma gunner, the ravener dropped the champion in a whirl of talons but failed to crack the gunner's armour. In response to my preemptive strike the chaos marines moved to assist the gunners. The bolter pair firing on the Ravener but failing to wound it. Farther down his line, the other gunner failed to get up and crawled towards cover, his companion running towards the nearest loot counter. The ravener and gunner continued their duel, the marines armour taking multiple blows.

So the new beast runs up and back with a loot counter while the devourer does the same with another. The leader beast rushes forward to assist the ravener. The venom cannon takes out the un-engaged plasma gunner and other continues to annoy my ravener by holding his ground. His lone trooper moves quickly to secure a loot counter on a small tower, he takes a risk and starts back down. The other two troopers join the fray and one is quickly cut down for his trouble.

Loaded with loot the new beast and devourer pull back while the venom cannon does what it was breed to do, take out the enemy as it shot the chaos marine off the tower, downed but not out, the fall not helping. The leader charges forward and downs one more marine while the plasma gunner fails to fall. Out numbered and surrounded the marines finally bottle out.

In the aftermath not one marine was truely fallen, and both our forces grew.

Dark Imperium Evolved - Imperium vs Nurgle

So this ended up being a 259 power level game... good lord.

Nurgle (estimates here)

Forgeworld greater daemon
Normal greater daemon
Daemon Prince
Epidimus
2 lords
2 squads of nurgle marines with plasma
1 squad of nurgle terminators
2 full squads of plague bearers
1 full squad of cultist
1 squad of 20 pox walkers
3 full squads of (plague flys)
3 squads of 3 nurglings
1 squad of 4 beast of nurgle
1 squad of 3 toads
and a soul grinder

There was more as by count he had 31 units to set up and I know I missed a few.

Imperial Forces

Captain in gravis
captain
2 primarius lutinenets
librarian
primarius chaplain
primarius ancient
primarius apothacary
1 squad of 9 incessors
2 squads of 6 incessors
2 10 man tactical squads
1 5 man ternimator squad
1 5 man reiver squad
a Repulsor
1 3 man Insetpor squad
1 3 man aggressor squad
Redemeptor Dread
Dread
2 Marauder Destoryers
and a Baneblade

IMPForce

Mission was King Slayer, deployment was Pincer and my Ruse was Inspiring Speech (army is fearless as long as the warlord is alive). Twist was Acid rain.

Below was the starting deployment:

DarkImpE4

DarkImpE2

DarkIMPe3

Not going into details like the kill team game, but I gave up after after my turn four when a risky maneuver involving a charging baneblade did not pan out as I hoped. In general I had shifted towards his lighter flank and had removed all of his marines and flys but had not downed his larger daemons and they were in my line. While the inspiring Speech helped keep me alive, the acid rain which fell for the first two turns helped him even more.

Imperium vs Eldar

This was a 11K per side battle... at 2am, on a 10x4 board. So the eldar player had a Revenant Titan, Wraithknight, a good amount of aspect warriors (three squads of each aspect minus the shining spears), a few dozen guardians, wyches, falcons... pretty much everything in the codex x2 at least.

On the Imperium side we had a 4K ad mech force with a knight, 4K tank company with air support and instead of deathwatch we had 3K of necrons, the DW player had the wrong army.

Mission was home bases, the eldar base was center of his deployment zone in a large building while ours was in a far corner, later to be a building.

Memory is fuzzy due to me being up since 6am the prior day, on my feet for most of this and just finished the grueling battle versus nurgle. At least this game raised $30 for charity just from our opponent, lord knows he needed the help. To explain, as part of the event, the store sold re-rolls at the cost of $1 each. So let the game begin.

It was given who ever went second would be taking a heavy loss in the opening salvo. The eldar had to try to seize and that cost him $9. The damage that caused was the lose of my baneblade, both of our necron's monoliths and a few admech infantry in the shooting phase, then the ctan in the combat round to a solitair. Solved that problem with a volley from a LR demolisher.

Our return fire held some weight, the revenant was smoking (6W left) after most of my tank company focused fire on it. His front line took heavy damage with the lose of a few tanks, his nightwing (from a single hellstrike volley from the thunderbolt). It turned into a slug fest after that. We managed to down the titan the next round but not before it killed our obelisk that was guarding our base, a Manclador and a bomber. Fire dragons downed my thunderbolt in a single volley but they didn't last long after.  Fire was traded but the eldar losses were piling up much faster than ours.

The malcadors proformed well, doing at least a thrid of the wounds to the titan, including the final blow, and wiping out a full striking scorpian squad in overwatch. After three turns and four hours the eldar player gave since the ad mech was near untouched and moving too close to his near defenseless base. Plus while he might have been able to tag ours, I still had a good number of tanks, a bomber on the way and most of his anti-vehicle units had been neutralized. Plus we were all tired, hitting hour 23 of our marathon.

Overall not a bad day, below are a few more pictures from the day.

Well so much for regular updates…

WIP Nid SWA

So I’m almost done with the Tyranid warrior Shadow War team, just some detail work and basing and their done. Other than the Ravener and secondary Gun Beast. Below is the final equipment list.

Leader Beast – Twin boneswords, Bonesword and lash whip, flesh hooks, adrenal sac, extended chitin, and acid blood.

Warrior 1 – Scything talons x4, flesh hooks, adrenal sac, extended chitin, and acid blood.

Warrior 2 – Twin boneswords, deathspitter, flesh hooks, adrenal sac, extended chitin, and acid blood.

Gunbeast 1 – Venom cannon, Twin boneswords, flesh hooks, adrenal sac, extended chitin, and acid blood.

Gunbeast 2a – Venom cannon, Twin boneswords, flesh hooks, adrenal sac, extended chitin, and acid blood.

Gunbeast 2b – Barbed Strangler, Twin boneswords, flesh hooks, adrenal sac, extended chitin, and acid blood.

Ravener (Spec Op) – Scything talons x6, devourer

Now while I can’t field three gun beasts, I want to build a barbed strangler in case I play in a campaign with an ork gang. I’ve seen them in clumps of four or more and that will work well for the large blast template. Otherwise I’ll just field twin venom cannons since the multi-shot tends to drop pairings just fine.

As far as the campaign goes, done seven games and the team is fully kitted. I am however behind on promethium. The genestealer cult player is in the lead with ten cashes. Final round for the campaign is when a player has 15, I have eight so not too far behind.

Below is some of the WIP of my elder force (left) next to my table ready versions(right) for comparison of what they will look like:

biker wip

Falcon WIP

Also a pair of Hornets, God I love these things. Next FW order I do I’m getting another pair or more depending on funds and just going shuriken cannons. Sure I only hit on 4+ if I advance, but between their natural ability, plus vector engines, plus the Altoic ability means that their at a -3 to hit. Just have to keep the target at near max range.

Hornets

I got some guard tanks and the Iyandan Eldar starter for christmas so hopefully I'll make sure to document my progress better next month.

So been distracted by rl and projects all over the B&C over the last year and completely forgot to update this thing..

So 2018, over and gone but not a light year. During that time I've done a few painting challenges and gotten in a few games. Let's review:

I managed to finish a few painting challenges.
Tyranid Growth
Imperial Fist Expansion V
E Tenebrae Lux VI: Ad Mech - Vow 1, Vow2, Vow 3
Unboxing Day

During that time I also did a Tale of Gamers with my local group, you can read about that here. Unfortunately it seems that interested as dropped, but I got a full army and a lot of games out of it.

I even tried my hand at Ad mech proper, though I didn't get a game in I did at least complete my patrol group.

Admech patrol

Also did a quick build of a stormhawk interceptor I got in a secret santa exchange. I did two this year, the other was a large amount of AoS Sylventh.

interceptor

At current I'm working on Orks for an event later this month. Pictured below is the Blastajet I'm working for both the event and the monthly challenge. I also have two painboys and ten shoota boyz I'm working on as well.

blastajetwip2

I'll try and update more often, even if it means double posting in the event threads as well as here. Hopefully that will get me into regular updates finally.

So I vowed for another painting event, One More Day for Rogal Dorn, doing a primaris Lt of the Hammer of Dorn chapter.

Hammerwip2

The blastajet is coming along, need to add some more colour and details, but it's 'table ready'.

blastajetwip3

Next up is a wartrike and a few buggies and traks plus I need to finish a pair of painboys.

So finished my first vow for One More Day and added another.

Also working on some buggies with the wartrik.

Bikerz1

Painboyz1

And the painboyz are coming along, I want to do some more details on both, but I believe they can pass the three foot rule so are ready for tomorrows bout. That is if it's not snowed out.
