Limited line of models and units?

I don't want the solution to TSons competitive issues to be purely imaginative through Psychic Powers, or heavy Forge World. This would seem like an easy way out, and while fluffy, could be pretty unoriginal if done poorly.

TSons are so unique, and while yes we dis have a release already, wanting more isn't me saying I'm unhappy. It just means I, along with others, feel we could use more variety. If our army comp stays the same and we just get lists of powers TSons will end up a character spam army which is an issue on it's own, and will be nerfed once character spam is addressed.

All hypothetical.

TLDR: Happy with previous release, I'm greedy and want more. Please don't make TSons character/smite spam army for psychic dakka.

I agree, i absolutely love the TS background, aesthetics and psychic power focus. But if we are going to be nothing more than smite spammers i'm probably not going to continue with the army. Having very limited weapon, model or psychic power variety is killing my enthusiasm for the game.

The Thousand Sons fluff is kind of limiting. They could add extra specialist sorcerers with various abilities but that would still just be more sorcerers.

If you look at actual marine units, Death Guard only have two more than the Thousand Sons do and one of those doesn't have a unique kit (Possessed). Neither have chosen or havok equivalents. Its the Daemon Engines that the Tzeentch army is lacking and those could be fluffy for TS since they have all those robots in the Heresy book so swapping for crazy arcane daemon robots would fit.

I'm just annoyed they upscaled the line right after the TSons got their release.

Thousand Sons are up scaled.  Rubrics aren't as big as Primaris marines but larger than the SM and CSM lines.

DG are upscaled compared to TS (and deathwatch who are the only other kit at the TS scale outside of that paint set). Fluff-wise that's because they're bloated by nurgle but that really doesn't make any sense of the armour plates being literally bigger.

I recently converted FW tsons bits with GW new tsons bits. They are upscaled. Not the extent to DG, but if you work with both bits sets at the same time it becomes apparent

Well, that's distressing, as I'm going to be doing this in the very near future. Do you think it has a noticeable effect in the finished model? I thought it would look so cool to mix and match the kits...

Its not too noticable. What i found myself doing is trimming the inside of the Tsons legs down (the hip joint). This allows the chest to sit a little lower and the tunic piece will help ease the eye throughout. They are still a VERY MUCH WIP so i cant say after painting if they will look noticeable. i can tell you the one i did NOT trim down, at this point (before tunic put on) is noticeable, the other ones i dont think so

I think its all but guaranteed we are getting more;  Exactly how *much* more is a debate, but I don't think there's a chance we are just getting "the basics" our 6 options + all legal options currently with no buffs or alterations.  Bonus folks; Thousand sons are money makers, big ones.  Its a safe bet were getting something.

I would fully expect the basics (Strategems, spell list or maybe even two if lucky, Warlord trait, Relics) but in addition I think we will get elite slot sorcerers of some kind, or elite slot characters.  If the DG have 5, Its safe to say we will get 1-2.

It'd be cool but I really don't see TS get anything more. The fluff is too restrictive - 99% of the Legion are now Rubrics. Maybe they could do an extended range of weapon options, close combat or havoc options but it seems unlikey to me.

They do, however, have a little wiggle room with daemon-engines and tanks etc. like the Death Guard release. If there is going to be any kind of expansion, that's where my money would be.

Hope I'm wrong.

How about psychic robots, as skallagoose mentioned? It's not the most prominent theme for the TS but it's definitely running through the background: the battle automata in A Thousand Sons, the FW castellax-achea, Ignis and Credence from the Ahriman trilogy, Khayon's fondness for automata in the Black Legion books. It seems to partially be an excuse for foreshadowing the mindless rubricae, I think.

A range of specialised battle-automata or psychic golems - some for CC, some for heavy support - would be more interesting than variants on the rubricae. Gets those big kits like the bloat drone and plague crawler. Moreover it's something that the community has already got stuck into with the old WHFB Tomb King/undead kits, as with VonKessler's obliterators.

I feel like some Mind Flayer type action would be cool for TSons. Fish, Feathers, and Fire feels like it fits the motif. The instruments of Tzeentch Horrors even feels fishy. TSons feel pretty Cthulu to me fot some reason.

Do you all think TSons could pull off that vibe? Do you think it could be a style that could work for TSons and/or Tzeentch?

I've been playing around with this in my head too, why not directly Cthulu, knowledge of the old ones gave power to Nitocris, who was a sort of foe to the old ones while being dark and warped herself.

I think people hold issue with TSons and Cthulu because of their pensive nature towards mutations. I personally just don't think that mutation needs to be a focus to pull off that Lovecraft feel. The amount of talk regarding heiroglyphics and the cryptic unidentifiable nature of Cthulu speaks to Tzeentch lores of undefined/warping forms.

The art of Tzeentch/TSons already feels very Orwellian in inspiration IMO. Exalts have some tentacle action going on. If we had a little more steam punk or bronze/brass it'd have that vibe down to the 20's. That plus some psychic powers that warp reality we've got win.

It wouldn't be much of a stretch to get some Mind Flayer type helmets, or maybe a Cthulu inspired Giant Spawn/Daemon Engine. I've got to get me some more knowledge on the topic to be able to get specifics on model stylistics. Lot's of tubes with funky fluids, maybe a flying submersible. Let's throw some paint at the wall and see what sticks!

Edit: Wrong author in post. Corrected. Orwell is my favourite author so I can see why my brain did that lol.

Surely you mean Lovecraftian?

But alas, the Rubric was done specifically to make the Thousand Sons immune or at least VERY resistant to mutation, no? Some kits like the Exalted Sorc seem to contradict this, so I'm somewhat at a loss.

The Rubric was performed to escape the fleah change. There are discussions of Sorcerers embarrassing Tzeentch and allowing mutations for greater power.

I don't think you can ever escape the warps effects on the body/mind, which is why the Rubric removed both. I also hold the opinion that the reason why powerful Psykers remained intact is because, from the perception of the warp, those Psykers had already suffered terminal change. It makes more sense to me that way then to think that there was an "exception" for those psychically charged to a high level.

Head cannon as I'm no expert.

And thanks for catching that but don't call me Surely ;)

The Yith are similiar to Thousand Sons, sending their minds across the cosmos and time to gather knowledge. They have vast libraries across the earth and beyond. I think that following up on the Ancient Egyptian cults influenced and formed around Nitocris and her rival would be best for Thousand Sons. I have even thought of doing faded sandstone with worn paint and ancient gemstones as the style for Tsons, a zandri dust type deal. Animated Guardian warriors who protect the powerful Sorcerors and Librarians of the old knowledge, and Nitocris even has armies of Jackal headed beast warriors.

That said, slight modfying the autopistols on the tzaangors makes them suitably 1910-1920s, and as said before bronze and lead will help, maybe some open pistons and dark decahedrons would be good. Bring over some of the book iconography from the SM librarians and grey knights. Spawn work well as Azazoth spawn and star vampires.

Haunter in the Dark, Call of Cthulu, Imprisoned with the Pharaohs, Brotherhood of the Beast(by dark adventure radio theatre), at the mountains of madness and shadows over innsmouth. These are the best by far, and if you like audio dramas then you can get all of these by dark adventura radio theatre, and they do a fantastic job.

Do you have any recommendations or Lovercraft works? I'm just peeling into the books (Wkkipedia only gets you so far) so I'd like to know what's worth reading/listening to.

Sorry for off-topic!

All mentioned by HCM are sure bet, a good way to start is with a collection of short stories, personally one of my favorite is At the Mountain of Madness. As for longer stories Lurker at the Threshold is really good too.

A while back i was looking for something Lovecraftian to proxy for pink horrors.

Gibbering mourners or some other misshapen form with lots of eye balls, mouths and tentacles though I had no luck.

The pink horrors are just goofy looking to me. So are the blues but I can look past them if i had something cool for pinks.

I like 3 different forms for each of the horrors.

Any ideas.
