Just getting started with Death Guard.  How's this for a core to play at 1250 and then expand?
 

-Malignant Plaguecaster
 
-7 Plague Marines, 2 Blight Launchers
-7 Plague Marines, 2 Blight Launchers
-3 Nurgling Swarm
-3 Nurgling Swarm
-3 Nurgling Swarm
 
-5 Blightlord Terminators, 4 Bubotic Axes, 1 Flail of Corruption
 
-3 Myphitic Blight Haulers

The Blight-Haulers are a pretty significant investment. Ask yourself, do you really need the 3+ to hit on them?

 

As for your detatchment, you won't get the Death Guard trait with this list. Inexorable advance is only granted when your entire detatchment has the DEATH GUARD keyword(s), which the Nurglings do not have. If you want to run Nurglings (or any daemons for that matter) and keep Inexorable advance you'll need to take a separate detachment. This isn't such a bad thing either, as you'll be able to net some more CP from building your army that way.

 

Here's what I would do:

 

Battalion (Pure Death Guard)

 

Malignant Plaguecaster

 

El-Cheapo Generic Lord (for re-rolls)

 

7x Plague Marines

 

7x Plague Marines

 

10-20 Poxwalkers (this is mainly to fill out the third troop slot)

 

5x Blightlords

 

1x Blight Hauler (I don't really feel you need three of these in a 1250 point game and they are expensive points wise)

 

Patrol (Mixed Chaos):

 

Generic CSM Sorcerer (For access to dark hereticus)

 

3x Nurglings

 

3x Nurglings

 

I don't know how many points that is of the top of my head, but you get the idea. I feel like this is a more balanced 1250 point force (more boots on the ground, a wider variety of psychic powers e.c.t.).

Thanks for the feedback @TheMelancholic.  I forgot about the detachment bonus.  With that in mind, you're right, some rejigging is needed.  Your suggestions seem decent too.  I'll crack out the book and take another stab at it.  I'm keen not to use any generic CSM characters if I can help it though.  

Re: the 3x Haulers, I'm not super fussed about the 3+ to hit.  I just really like the model and the background, and I know that as I grow the army I'll be using a tri-lobe as the core...  so I guess I wanted to get it in now!  It might not be right for 1250pts though, you have a good point.

Hmmm...see if you can slot in another HQ to make it a battalion. Those 3CP can go a long way.

Even a generic lord with a Balesword will buff your gunline's shooting and melee by a decent amount.
