500 points for introducing the game, help pls

Hello Xenos scum, I come from the AdMech board in hopes of researching and cataloging various Orkish skirmish units and tactics.

Jokes aside, I'm looking at putting together an 500 point all-comer's (as all comers as you can get at that level) list for introducing new people to how the game side of the hobby works. I started thinking about this after my brother expressed a little interest into the hobby. He and I have played video games together for years and he's been around 40k some because of me, gone to stores a couple times and glances over battles, but this is the first time he's actually shown interest. The problem, at least the one he told me, is that the armies I have (AdMech as my first, Guard second) are just confusing and not that interesting to him.

He friggin loves Orks though. I haven't kept up with Orks at all, but what I remember from when I joined in 7th and was looking at armies is that they're simple, straight forward, and easy to learn with. So I figured I could put together a small list for him to use to learn the game, and to show other people in future too.

So, what is happening in Ork world with 8th? Like I said, I haven't kept up with Orks, or much other Xenos, at all, so all advice is appreciated. The Start Collecting box I'm assuming is a solid choice to start with but beyond that I haven't much of a clue.

Interesting. I read this earlier this morning.
I haven't kept up with anything not Orks for a while now so I'm having trouble with a take all comers list at 500 points.
I guess it would be a patrol list. with 1 troop, boys. and then what every else.
I can't say anything about the getting started boxes I have no idea what's in them and probably wont look.
At 500 points I think you'll be lucky to get 5 or 6 units in. That may be good, don't know how that stacks up to other factions.
I'd try to take a little of everything, I mean something from every slot. I'd min/max the list, if it's cheap like grots take a lot of them if they cost as much as Nobs just take a few of them.

This could be good. You'll likely want a trukk in the list to Or some other low cost but fast vehicle. It just depends on what you like and feel like painting.
But there are lots of choices. You may decide to take 6 mobs of Kommands for a vanguard and that's just around 300 points. (6 mobs of 5)
Then you just need an HQ and what ever else you care to stick in. (Could be a war boss riding in a trukk... ) Actually my Kommandos doesn't work due to reserve rules? (I think. )
Again no idea for 500 points. I prefer more points 750 being the lowest I've ever enjoyed and usually for multi player games.

Honestly? For learning the game, I'd throw out the points altogether. Just start with the Start Collecting box for the Orks, and teach the mechanics, perhaps using the equivalent of the AdMech or IG Start Collecting boxes for the opposing army. Once he's got the basics down, then add on force composition and points, etc.

Well the idea I had is just to give them a well rounded, premade list to play with. If they wanna start their own army then points come in, but on my end having the 500 gives me more of a chance to assemble a good starter roster.

Speaking of rosters, I did a crash course on tactics and list build and came up with this

Weirdboy w/ Da Jump

10x Boyz w/choppa+slugga & Boss Nob

Nob squad of 5, various weapons

Painboy w/ Grot and Killsaw

Deff Dread w/ 3x Dread Klaw and 1 Scorcha

Comes to 497. I figured I need at least one Pysker in the list to teach psychic shenanigans.

As much as it pains me to say it, why don't you use the power points system? it was made for this kind of thing.

As for the list you mentioned I cant help but think it has too few boyz. I'd get rid of the nobs and get another mob of boyz. If you really need the nob rule you can always use a nob with waaagh! banner to go alongside them.

Maybe change the deff dread for killa kans because grotz iz kool! (and more shooty, which is what you are lacking)
