Do you even Rhino, Bro?

I noticed a lot folks, not all, choose more units or upgrades over rhinos or other transports.

It was well put in another thread that they are largely situational depending upon your local variables.

A good option to have though some seemed to have no transports needed/ wanted strategy...

Why or why not?

For me they are a great option but may not be an auto include.  Depends on a lot of variables such as model count and point size, mission etc...

Also I while I pick up some Deimos pattern preds for my 1000 sons  I assume its appropriate for Deimos pattern rhinos as well for 1000 sons and suitable fluffy?

I have 3 rhinos currently but are clearly Black Legion marked and I would rather get new rhinos as options for my sons.  However I do have one GW rhino that is a bit of junk rhino that I can salvage as an option for Tzangoors.

I currently don't use rhinos.  Don't feel they are necessary.

Probably mainly due to only having one for my TSons and not wanting to spend money for more.

Regarding using Rhinos:

4 Rubrics for a Rhino.

Think of a Rhino as a psychic power that allows movement of a squad 3-12 inches and provides a 10 wound shield. Powers pasychic backlash results in a 1 in 6 chance to explode and do mortal wounds.

Sounds pretty good to me.

I have 2 problems with Rhinos :

1) They seem only useful to carry 2x5 Rubrics with Warpflamers. If I use Soulreaper cannons, I want them to be firing from turn 1.

2) They hide our beautiful models in hideous square boxes.

They're not bad per se, but they're really expensive for (most of the time) a single turn of extra movement. Are 10" worth 72pts for you ?

I´m thinking to use one or two rhinos, deping on how many points I play, to get some speed for my marines (or tzaangors). At the same time also geting some protection for my troops. So they are a part of my plans. But as our troops cost pretty much I would not use more as I sadly will then have to litte points for other fun stuff.

Maybe... in some cases yes, others no.

I see your points though would think they would have purpose in later rounds, shooting, vharging, screening etc...

I've only a handful of 8th games though.

I prefer to run Rubrics in 20-man formation, two Soulreapers, so I could buff them all with one spell. And Rhino can't fit that much, so, yeah, it isn't a good choice, unless it's for flamer Rubrics.

I'm so surprised at how much hate that Rhinos get.

They're circumstantial sure but you see standard marines taking them to protect their troops, so why wouldn't you take them for a more expensive option? I do agree they're ideal for 2x5 Rubric squads, preferably with flamers, but they aren't terrible.

Question to the crowd: if they were Razorbacks would that be a good answer to our transport/anti-tank dilemma?

Don't hate them, just think they're not worth the points, especially if you factor in that everytime it's destroyed you have a good chance of losing one or two models. Multiple Razorbacks with 5-man MSU Flamer Rubrics would be an interesting tactic indeed.

I use them with a pair of 5 mans, both with flamers if points permit. I'll move my Rhino into a spot to provide LOS blocking cover for one of my other infantry. Once everyone is offloaded my Rhinos don't seem to get targeted as long as I'm using them as mobile terrain or overwatch sponges.

I will say though they're expensive and I wish we had Razorbacks or an alternative transport option. Common crystal shards!

I don't use rhinos in my Ultras but there's a darn good reason. They advance in a block of shoot auras.

When I build my Thousand sons the threat is shorter range and often quite potent at short range. My opponent is typically fearful of the flames.

Also opponent wise I'm typically getting hammered from range. Not to mention a rubric and scarab based list is typically fairly slow.

Anyone got any thoughts on if the Deimos pattern rhinos are appropriate for 1k sons?  i dont see why not though dont read the novels.

A while back I read that 20 man Rubric Squads were doing some serious work on the table.  Glad to see some are still rolling with that.

Also good to see a lot of 5 man warp flamer comments.  that does seem to be a great use.  2x5 man warpflamer driving deep could cause some serious disruption!

I'm thinking of adding ahriman and a rhino to take my army from 1250 to 1500. The added threat from the faster movement seems worth it!

Honestly at the worst case scenario the Rhino is a so-so unit. Best case scenario it gives you options for 1) overwatch and 2) getting an expensive unit somewhere a little faster with a box-shield.

Another tactic I use is Rhino wall advance from the way we used to have to do it in 4th when you could die from entanglement. (I named my Rhino's entanglement 1 and entanglement 2... what a horrid edition). Anyway, empty Rhino's with dudes behind them and even a Havok Launcher are something opponents despise shooting at.

I think it adds tactical flexibility a lot of stuff can jump in them mid game too if they've been ignored.

I know they aren't great, but some people are making them out as a very difficult unit to use. That would be the Drop Pod... and finally one edition comes along where I don't wish we had drop pods. lol

Most of my list lately got 2x10 rubric in rhino with 2 combi-bolter (+  havoc launcher if playing against hordes). I found that if my rhino is equipped with weapon it still may be worth it for my opponent to try to get rid of it even if the unit did disembark.  I'm curious to know what load out most people use if any.

I like rhinos for charging guard gunlines so I don't take all the lasgun fire on my cultists. They are also nice for blunting assaults against marines before your berzerkers charge them. So they hurt the rhino, no big deal. Them your berzerkers get to charge without losing any to overwatch.

In theory they could work as a :cussty razorback with a havok launcher. Probably not a wise point investment though.

  • 2 weeks later...

FW has new preorders up for deimos rhino and land raider doors. No 1000 sons though it got me wondering...

I am thinking of ordering a couple maybe 3 of the deimos rhinos... in fluff what iconography would 40k 1000 sons have on traitor legion era vehicles? I would think most if not all 30k 1000 sons icons would be replaced with fiery serpent eating its tail but is there anything that says it one, the other or could be both

There were sons of Horus doors that looked very chaosy...

I have the current FW 1000 sons rhino doors so I know there is that.
