First Match after AM codex release

I played a 100 PL match with my friend/nemesis. Guard vs Orks, man was it not as challenging as I thought.  I wanted a Thraka and Yarrick showdown..... got a bloodbath.

Even with the 30 man cap on conscripts, they paid out. I never failed an order (now with the 4+ caveat) and those flashlights did a lot of diddly.

Long story short: Used manticore, las cannon teams, 2 of three LR to mess with transports. I thought the Mek shield was going to be a huge problem, but nah. He had saves for days, I had guns for weeks.

3rd LR with a Tank Commander lit up infantry with a punisher cannon.

Having Yarrick within 6 inches of 3 tanks, and two conscript squads made it ridiculous. Rerolls on everything vs ork? not even a challenge. I just walked everything forward, assaulted when I could with conscripts, done and done.

I won't be taking yarrick against him again, literally no challenge.

Dear god Emperor the new codex is powerful! I ran three Russ's as well and they were ace. The Mordian defensive gunners Strategem did for an assault squad who charged. My Commander Punisher was down to it's last 3 wounds so would normally be hitting on 5's. On overwatch with the Mordian Doctrine and Defensive gunners Strategem it was hitting on 4's...

My LRBT, my now cheaper LRBT that can fire twice was very solid as well.

Infantry squads are now even better. the Mordian Strategem (shoot again on a to hit roll of 6) is ok, combine two squads together and give them FRFSRF and it's good. There's some discussion on the Mordian thread that a FRFSRF lasgun at close range will fire all 4 shots again on a hit roll of 6, which would make it excellent. I don't think that's right myself mind you...

Just a downright nasty codex at the moment, I'm not sure what to think about that after 15 years of being mediocre at best...

I have done some number crunching, of both scenarios in the Mordian thread. Page 4 i think if anyone is interested.

Nicely done.  Opinions on new Russes after running three?

Not just table fluff any longer.

I was using valhallan rules, so my Russ barely showed any signs of damage, and the double gun if moving under 5? Emprah be praised.

4 shots with a battle cannon? Yeah, sure.  2 shots with a punisher cannon? Why, don't mind If I do.

Also, since I tend to use my Comissars and officers rather frequently, I use the tanks to screen the characters in case I have an enemy LOS sniper hanging around.

I used them to wondrous effect against my next opponent (guard/Blood Angel mix). I'll post a battle report about that, also.

had a 50pl match at my local league last night, my Tallarn squad took on a newish player with some Tau.

I dropped my two sentinels near the first objective and positioned them for a good covering fire with their lascannons

The Tau's hammerhead tank was across from my right flank where I positioned two devildogs (hellhounds).

I kept my three LR in Ambush Mode on the side of the table while he finished placing most of his infantry, and kept his battle suits and warlord robot in reserve ready to deepstrike. I began turn 1 and sprinted my devildawgs right at his tank, their meltacannons did serious damage down to 1 wound and popped the tank after my pintle mounted stubbers fired. I think the Tau player wanted to get vengeance for his shiny tank getting smashed and dropped his battle suits with a drone bubblewrap and warlord within striking distance of my devildawgs, but nowhere near any of the objectives, they lit up one of the dawgs but a lucky save kept it at 1 wound and surviving into the 2nd turn. Now the fun part, I was going to keep my ambush until turn 3 if I could but seeing huge opening in the Tau's back line my Tank Commander w/punisher + plasmas and two demolishers with meltas rolled on to his side of the board. His war lord was in perfect range of my punisher cannon which nearly wasted him, a couple lascannon and a demolisher volley took him and then two of his battlesuits clean off the board, Boom! My two sentinels continued to harass his infantry, as they moved towards objective three. His elite infantry unit took out the wounded devildawg, unfortunately it  didnt  explode, he charged my other devildawg with his battlesuit my melta cannon rolled double 6's in overwatch, buh-bye battlesuit! Turn three I slow rolled my tanks towards his infantry line wasting another squad of elites on a rooftop with my 40D punisher cannon #RedMist! I charged his other commander with one of my sentinels and trapped him in cc. On his turn, his commander fell back to free up the infantry to shoot at my sentinel and some how the heavy barrage of laser fire only took 2 wounds off me. Turn 4 my tanks continued to advance and I tabled him after a few turret barrages from my demolishers. We finished 6 points to 4, he did quite well obtaining his maelstrom objectives. Obviously it was a fun game for me completely crushing him with my surprise tanks, I told him after if he'd deepstriked onto my sentinels rather than get distracted by the devildawgs I would have had to reconsider where my LRs dropped and had more opportunities to shoot them. Tallarn for the win!

I'm playing my first match with the new codex tonight; as well as my first match ever as guard. I've got two punishers and three lascannon sentinels that will ambush with Tallern doctrine. Not sure what the other guy is bringing.

The double shots for LRs does seem a bit over-the-top. I'm happy IG are relevant but I feel this codex may be TOO relevant (read: OP) now. Hopefully Eldar and Ork 'dexes will balance out some of the nonsense.

Where did I put my bolt pistol...

But yeah, from the leaked eldar stuff, I dont think guard is going to be too "op" in the future, heck, the warhammer community site posted the winning lists of their tourny and the highest rank guard got was 5th, with chaose armies and marines beating it with xenos in the next load. I think much of the "shock" had gone.

1500 pt battle today, Tallarn, Tank Cmmd Punniser, 2 Battle Tanks, 2 Punishers, 2 Demolisher, 2 Devildawgs

vs.

DeathWatch Squad of Terminators, Librarian, two squads of Reavers, Land Raider, Watchmaster +squad of 8 Marines

Turn 1, I got initiative, set Tank Cmmd, Punishers and Demolishers in Ambush

BattleTanks reduced the Land Raider down to 3 Wounds, DevilDawgs took out a reaver squad

He dropped a squad of Reavers behind me and severely wounded one of my Dawgs, then reduced one Battletank down to 2 wounds

Turn 2 I got his Land Raider down to 1 wound, I killed a 3 of his Reavers in my back field with the other Devildawg

He trashed my wounded battle tank, charged my Devildawg, I took out one Reaver in overwatch, and deployed his Watchmaster and Marine squad in the corner of the board.

Turn 3 I destroyed his Land Raider, and retreated my Devildawg out of CC

He destroyed my wounded Devildawg in the far corner with his Marines and Watchmaster

Turn 4 Tank Commander + 4 LRs rolled onto the same far corner, annihilating his entire Marine Squad and Watchmaster to 4 wounds

He dropped his Terminators in cover near my LR blob but after a couple wounds, failed to charge (game changing moment!)

Turn 5 BRRRRT his Watchmaster with my Punishers, and took out 3 Terminators with my BattleTank and Demolishers

He Conceded, VP points 3 to my 6

my 2nd Victory, Tallarn FTW !

going to finish painting up my Tallarn infantry, and kit bash some crusaders and roughriders in the next few days!
