Tau: making IG players feel competent in assault since 2001.

You say that I did have a game in 7th when a 8 man IS assault a lone fire warrior or 2. Completely whiffed, FW killed 1 guy then swept them after they failed leadership ...

I do like how guard isn't completely impotent in assault in 8th.

Adjunct Battle Report ASIF408 to Armageddon Strategic Command as relayed from Astropath Dominic onboard battle cruiser Faithful in Death as relayed from Astropath Sebastian on planet Pelucidar assigned to Expeditionary Force Peregrinus.

+++ Begin Report +++

Warning reports of the unusual Ork ground leviathan have been processed. A Battalion of Airborne Stormtroopers are en-rout to the area. If such an odd monstrosity is affecting the Astronomicon it won’t be allowed to continue to do so for much longer.

Tau activity has ceased in the immediate area. The forces suppressed or have redeployed elsewhere.

+++ Begin Seventh Contact +++

In preparation to expand influence an artillery unit was dispatched to sector grid BCB607. Elevated and easy to defend. Cresting the area Company Commander Cassandra’s Artillery Force encountered an ambush by Raptors, likely in revenge for the attack on the Ravenguard in the weeks prior.

The mission, Secure and Control. We both had an objective marker in our deployment zones. My opponent won the roll off and selected the Spearhead Assault map because he liked how it gave good cover saves for his forces while discouraging my forward marching options.

For good measure he used the Ravenguard stratagem that allows a unit to ambush for a Command Point, which he did with some Primus Aggressors.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_1953.jpg

All three Basilisks were placed on the back area of cover for the save. The four Infantry Squads spaced outwards to discourage the ambush stratagem. The CC and Astropaths in front of the left most Basilisk.

I declared Old Grudges on the Primus Aggressors. Both of my Astropaths had Maelstrom in case one died.

Paying two Command Points I went for a Preliminary Bombardment, got a mortal wound on a Primus Aggressor and killed another Raptor.

Raptors Turn 1: LIAS ISSODON, the lieutenant, the Ancient, and some Raptors move forward just enough to get their aura effects on the Primus Aggressors (which meant all misses could be rerolled as well as wound rolls of 1). Since their ambush stratagem doesn’t count for moving all the frag launchers had double dice. 24 Guardsmen would be wiped out, one ran away.

All three Missile Lauchers fail to wound the Basilisks.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_1954.jpg

The blue poker chips mark the objectives. Mine was actually placed at the closest part of my zone to his as a challenge.

Mordians Turn 1: With two-thirds of my Infantry Squads dead I try to get as many lasguns into rapid fire range as possible. The Stormtroopers hold off on their combat drop. The out-of-cover Raptors screening for LIAS ISSODON.

Maelstrom and Telepathic Assault fail.

A storm of GRUGDE powered lasgun fire and Basilisk support clear the Primus Aggressors. The last Basilisk pulls a glory shot on the now closest Lieutenant and does exactly four wounds to kill him (no more re-rolling 1s to wound for the Raptors).

Since one of the Primus Aggressors in range of the ancient with A Starday Banner he makes the 4+ roll to get a free shot off before dying. Which kills two Guardsmen from the full squad.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_1955.jpg

Raptors Turn 2: Everyone returns to the safety of the jungles/woods before opening up fire. No kills with one Guardsmen making his save and the use of a Command Point re-roll for a Basilisk to make a 4+ save in cover against a krack missile.

Mordians Turn 2: My dwindling Infantry move up behind the LOS blocking stump/rock/thing. I squeezed the Astropaths up against it to be in range of his special character hoping to go undetected.

Once again the Psychic Phase is full of fail and suck.

Basilisk fire on the right flank killing three of the Raptors.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_1956.jpg

Raptor Turn 3: Three Krack missiles go into the Bassilisks. Even with cover saves and the Command Re-roll 8 wounds land on the center Artillery Piece. The Raptor Chapter Master’s 30” super Assault Weapon Malice fails.

Mordians Turn 3: No longer able to delay two Stormtrooper squads and a Tempus Prime drop behind the Raptors forces barely inside the map edge.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_1957.jpg

The remaining 13 Guardsmen, an Astropath, the Company Commander all move around the terrain and forward. One Astropath stays behind to hold the objective in case things go sideways.

Maelstrom fails for a 3rd time. Smite kills one.

Basilisk do their thing on a Raptor Squad aided Mordian Volley Fire. The Tempestor Prime waves his swagger stick telling both squads to “Aim Straighter”

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_1958.jpg

The slaughter received from Turn One is finally avenged. Even with the free revenge shots from the banner only one Stormtrooper died, all others made their saves. The Chapter Master is bloodied.

Raptor Turn 4: He had First Blood, I now had Line Breaker so we were currently tied. Pouring fire into the Melta Stormtroopers only another single trooper bites it. Malice rolls badly again against the closest Basilisk. The last Missile launcher does no better.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_1959.jpg

Like a BOSS the Company Ancient actually leaves the safety of the brush and charges the Melta Stormtroopers. His goal to kick all of their butts during late game extending turns and pull a win. Sadly one of the meltas actually rolls a 6 on overwatch and removes all but one wound from the hero. Undeterred the Ancient piles in to make more contact with the Plasma Squad and uses the sacred banner relic to beat two melta gunners dead. The retaliatory attacks back get that one needed wound to finish him off.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_1962.jpg

At best the Raptors could get a tie. LIAS ISSODON was at a 0+ save thanks to his stealth armor so Earthshakers and Plasma at best moved him to a 3+. All the melta was dead.

Mordians Turn 4: A semicircle of Guardsmen is formed around the character. Stormtroopers move into rapid fire range.

The psychic phase ends unnaturally fast.

The massed fire ends the match.

+++ End Report+++

Next Wednesday is a quasi Apocalypse event. Our league won’t be having a third place. Instead whoever does best in this challenge will get a prize. The rule details are still being tested but we will likely be limited to two units on the table at any one time and no vehicles will be allowed to board the Ork super land crawler.

My inner anarchist is telling me to actively focus on the other high league point people so that none of us win this. Let one of the kids have it. I have plan but since the most dangerous person in the league might be reading this I’ll have to keep it a secret.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry for the delay. Thanksgiving was great but crazy busy followed by being sick. I’m so far behind it is hard to beleive Christmas is just weeks away.

Adjunct Battle Report ASIF509 to Armageddon Strategic Command as relayed from Astropath Dominic onboard battle cruiser Faithful in Death as relayed from Astropath Sebastian on planet Pelucidar assigned to Expeditionary Force Peregrinus.

+++ Begin Report +++

The warp disrupting behemoth of Warboss Orkamedies wasn’t only causing the Imperium issues. Tyranids, Dark Eldar, and Chaos traitors had an problems caused by the bizarre device. Even Tau showed up for scientific purposes.

+++ Begin Eighth Contact +++

Rules

Da Rulz for fighting as Frenemies against the Green Greatness.

Everyone brings 1000 points following the League rules. Only two units from each list are allowed on the tables at the same time.

All Looozers (players) roll percentile dice (2d10 with a high and low). Order of actions will be from highest to lowest.

In turn order each Looozer (player) does Movement. After everyone is done repeat with the same order for Psychics. Repeat for Shooting, Close Combat, and Morale Phase. Then da Green Winnerz take their entire turn.

During the Green Winnerz Movement Phase to simulate da Greatness movement move all terrain and models not on the massive vehicle 12” inches towards the back of the tables. Any units or terrain that pass into the front of the behemoth are auto destroyed. New terrain is placed at the front tables.

Proving your dakka and head butting is the bestest:

2 Victory Points: Killing an Ork Mob

1 Victory Point: Killing any weaklings (other Player’s Units)

10 Victory Points: Destroying any section da Greatness.

20 Victory Points: Carrying Orkamedies body off the table as a trophy/specimen. This auto ends the scenario at the end of the turn.

Person with the most Victory Points takes 3rd place in the League. Whoever ends the league in 1st or 2nd Place cannot win the scenario.

Deployment

Even though everyone had 1k force lists every player was restricted to at most two units on the table at any given turn (not counting dedicated transports). This was done to keep the turns moving quickly as possible.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2052.jpg

In the deployment zone from left to right: Dark Angle Tactical & Primus Squad, 2x Blood Angel Tactical Squads, 2x Noise Marine Squads, Genstealers & Broodlord, Sister Dominion Squad in an Immolator & Saint Celestine, Riptide, Space Wolves with 2x Razorbacks (Tact Squad and Wulfen), and two Dark Eldar Raider transports.

Instead of waiting for first turn Movements all Deepstrikers started on table in order of initiative.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2053.jpg

On the starboard side a Tau Commander and two Remora Stealth Drone Fighters. Off the bow a Trygon and some Termagants. To the port side near the stern two ten man Stormtrooper Squads (one unit with four plasma & the other four meltaguns).

Players Turn One

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2054.jpg

My Stormtroopers deal five wounds on the stern Killa Turret. Kill a few oks on the port rocket.

The Tau Commander squeezes behind the main deck Ork Mob and his Remoras basically obliterate almost all the Orks in the middle of the ship, and one Zap Gun from the bow. The Commander then charges to kill the scraps.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2056.jpg

Due to some confusion the Riptides buddy Stealth Suits deployed like normal deepstrike. They killed one Zap Gun from the ships bow.

The Termagants manage to get one wound on a Zap Gun.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2055.jpg

Everyone else pushed forward the deployment zone.

Orks Turn One

All terrain and models not on deck move 12” towards the back table edge.

A whole mess of Ork units teleport from da Greatness. A killer can, buggy, truck, and some boyz block the path to Orkamedies. A few squads of boyz on the Advancing players left flank.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2058.jpg

Thankfully the dice rolls were with us.

Players Turn Two Movement

Any attempt to mount on the front section of da Greatness need to take a dangerous terrain check (models exiting from vehicles are except). A Remora had to use a re-roll stratagem to avoid taking a mortal wound.

The Trygon climbs up on the port rocket deck.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2059.jpg

Everyone else jockeys for a better firing position on their respective targets.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2060.jpg

Players Turn Two Psykic Phase

Broodlord smites the Buggy for 3 wounds.

Players Turn Two Shooting Phase

Stormtroopers get 15 more wounds on the Killer Tank section of da Greatness.

Space Wolves get a wound on the Buggy.

Dark Angels deal 2 wounds on the Truck.

Tau Commander shoots up Orkamedies while the Remora clean up Nobs

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2062.jpg

Noise Marines put two wounds on the Buggy.

The other Tau player puts two wounds on the Killer Tank section with his Stealth Suites. The Riptide destroys the Buggy and kills one Ork.

Players Turn Two Close Combat Phase

Trygon Prime bashes the port rocket section for eight wounds.

Broodlord and Genestealers kill eight Nobs from the Buggy.

Saint Celestine ends the Truck.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2061.jpg

Tau Commander charges and ends Orkamedies.

Ork Turn Two Movement

As the bridge crew fell the big button was hit causing da Greatness to go into turbo boost. This turn all terrain and models not on board moved 24” towards the rear table. Both of my Stormtrooper fly outside the game space.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2063.jpg

Several units teleport in. Notably a Zappa Gun Squad out in front of the bow.

Ork Turn Two Shooting

One Lifta Droppa targets the Tau Commander. The other puts four mortal wounds on a Remora. The Belly Gun finishes it off.

Supper Gattling kills one Noise Marine.

Ground Zappa Guns murder two Blood Angel Tacs.

Ork Turn Two Close Combat

Tau Commander finishes off the last Ork Nob and consolidate moves off da Greatness.

Ork Nobs kill of the Gemini escorting Saint Celestine.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2064.jpg

Players Turn Three

Two deepstriking Stormtrooper Squads shoot away the remaining wounds on the Killer Tank section only find out that doesn’t actually destroy the weapon systems for the behemoth. The correct target for that was the power source on the back that has a lower toughness and less wounds.

*facepalm*

Space Wolves Razorbacks kill two Ork Zappa Guns. Wulfen will charge and slaughter some Nobs.

Dark Eldar will shoot some Nobs before charging Incubi finishes them off.

Dark Angels in the interest of getting some VP shoot and kill three Blood Angel Tacts.

Noise Marines not wanting to be outdone in the Traitor-ing Event gun down the entire Dark Angel Tact that went rogue.

Genstealers will charge and wipe out some Nobs. The Broodlord goes after the Killer Can inflicting 3 wounds only to die from the counter attack.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2066.jpg

The Tau Commander with Orkamedies body charges the vehicle to move away from most everyone else.

Overwatch Zappa kills Saint Celestine.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2065.jpg

Rest of the game

With the arrival of more Orks players tend to focus on them.

Ever hungry the Genstealers NOM the Killer Can and the Truck at the same time.

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2067.jpg

http://home.earthlink.net/~databob/images/IMG_2068.jpg

Tau Commander will basically get Orkamedies off the table by moving around the back and fly off in turn four. He’ll end the battle with 1st by a wide margin of VP.

My Stormtroopers with melta and superheated plasma will take out the generator. This will get me second place with 20VP from destroying two sections of da Greatness.

Various shots from many eventually cripple the main hull. Notably the Sisters of Battle do a whopping 14 of the wounds.

The Trygon never gets to finish solo rending of the port thruster.

+++ Begin Report +++

I’ve known the gentleman who is running this league for awhile now. Improvements or at least trying different ideas for next time should help. Putting together a senario booklet will help immensely. Shrinking down from a grid of four 4’x6’ table mats (plus deployment zone) will help. Allowing entry on any table edge. It will make things more action packed, violent, and crazy... when introducing Gorkamorka like elements that is exactly what works verses a wider windswept battlefield.

I also need to work on my short-hand penmanship.
