Help me build my current passion: Raven Guard

General Strike

Recommended Posts

I am currently taking a break from playing 40k to focus on painting, modeling, and fluff. I have had some severe hobby blocks recently, which forced me to take a big step away from it all. This has helped me feel reinvigorated, and plan to continue the break while I explore my other hobbies, cinema, star trek, star wars, and fantasy novels. So much negative energy and over competitiveness killed it for me, and helping my S.O. work through her fathers cancer treatments and working a job I don't like has killed a lot for me.

Taking a step away from these things has helped me begin to rediscover my love for them. Including my first love, the Raven Guard, and has made me want to work on some modeling, painting and fluff.

My request of you, Brothers, is help putting together the creative pieces in my head to form cohesive fluff, and advice on where to start. Right now I only have a few bits, I want them to sneak around the codex rules by having a high number of scouts. I want them to not wear the chapter symbol on their pauldron, wearing a subdued company symbol instead, with a golden hand being the symbol of chapter members. What would be a good start for my painting? I currently have a big bag of bits from a friend, but only have a squad of unassembled cata termies to my name for SM.

First - what colours do you enjoy painting? Without answering that, marines can be an incredible chore. Found that out when I tried my hand at Imperial Fists.

Second - if you have been away for a time, practice to see if some of your skills have been retained, or just need to knock some rust off them.

Welcome back! :D

I actually got back into the hobby a few years back because I need an escape from life, haha! My wife has recently taken up mindfulness meditation, which as she describes it is how I consider hobby time! ;)

Personally I avoid orange like the plague! Id rather paint white. :D

Teal, black and violet sound like great combos...

Is this a custom RG successor? You could say high number of scouts is because they were a small cohort on a proving exercise when the great rift occurred and ended up on the wrong side. :D Any tactical marine elements could be other survivor splinters they've made contact with since it occurred!

I was thinking a custom successor, so that I can play around with the lore. How about Black with Teal on the shoulder pads? Once I am home I will use the painter to make a few ideas.

I do like the idea of them being in the Dark Imperium, cut off and maybe trying to reach the Blood Angels or another big friendly force to team up and fight alongside.

Black and Teal sounds great. You could also consider Teal highlights on black (like we see frequently in Dark Eldar). Many a member of the Corvidae family has a iridescent quality to their black plumage, and teal is one of the most dominant colors in that spectrum visible to the naked eye.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with!

I second the orange theory. Not enough orange around.

On the other hand, you could play the color progression theory with teal - go complementary colors instead of contrast. Touch up with a blue or green instead of orange. Black -> Teal -> Blue/Green.

I'd love to do something similiar to the Tau cloaking paintjobs out there, but doubt I have the skills. What do you guys recommend that I pick up for my first box to paint? Tacticals or scouts, maybe? What fits the RG theme for out anti tank? Just devastators and landspeeders?

Yeah, but I feel camo works best for what I want with my chapter. They cloak and ambush, hiding in camo, or the dark, then unleash massive fire power and fast assaults against the target to destroy them. Their time in the Dark Imperium has made their faith stronger, but made them much more brutal and ruthless towards their enemies. Maybe an influence of 100+ years of constant fighting and the loss of their main seed world,or maybe influence from years of learning and fighting alongside their Blood Angels cousins.
