Can anyone help me out with Black Library recommendations?

What I'm really after is a collection of short stories. 40K only, not interested in HH stuff. Ideally dealing with the Inquisition, Arbites, or other 'weird' aspects of 40K rather than straight up bolter porn. I just finished Scourge the Heretic and Innocence Proves Nothing, so more in that style would be good.

Cheers in advance :)

The Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies are quite good. Can pass as mystery/thriller more so than “bolter porn”.

Witch Hunter trilogy for Fantasy is also REALLY good.

Edit: ah, missed the short story part. The three omnibus I’ve listed above have very entertaining short stories FWIW.

Sadly, it's probably out of print, but imo the best hands down 40k anthology I have ever read is 'Let the Galaxy Burn' (2006), ed. by Christian Dunn and Marc Gascoigne. It has everything... Inquisition, Arbites, SoB, Imperial Guard, Imperial Navy, Ecclesiarchy, oh yeah.... and those Space Marine guys too. If BL doesn't have it in ebook format you can probably find it on Amazon or ebay. If the prices are unreasonable there, check with your local (or online) used/rare book dealer. I still read it from time to time:thumbsup:

I really enjoyed Helsreach, that's the only Black Library book I've delved into so far though. I don't have time to actually read books so my selection is limited to what is available as an audiobook. I really enjoyed Andrei the Imperial Guard Storm Trooper in that book.

For Helsreach, best to wait for the Armageddon Omnibus coming next year. Should include a bunch of stuff tying right into that.

Peter Fehervari's novels would be my recommendation. Or rather, everything he wrote and is gonna write. Weird, exceptionally dark and psychological.

Well there are only so many short story anthologies (that aren't exclusively Space Marine themed), and Let the Galaxy Burn collected most of the earlier ones together into quite a thick tome anyway. I'd still second the recommendation of course - some great tales within.

On the novel front, try Lord of the Night. Although ostensibly a Night Lords novel, it actually spends most of its time dealing with the Inquisition, Arbites, underhives and the 'real' Imperium behind the front lines.

If you can get your hands on a copy, or don't mind ebooks (I love 'em), "Planetkill" is absolutely tremendous, and it includes one of my favourite ever stores ("Seven Views of Uhlguth's Passing").

Similarly, I massively enjoyed the soon(next year)-to-be reprinted "Enforcer" omnibus by Matt Farrer. (About Shira Calpurnia, a new senior Arbitrator on Hydraphur investigating all sorts of not-bolter-porn-in-the-slightest!)

Which also includes my favourite ever novel, "Legacy".

I'd also seriously recommend either of the Hammer & Bolter Omnibuses. They're both filled with a tremendous amount of good, varied and interesting stories. Some HH and Fantasy in there; but the price:content ratio is still cracking.

I agree with Xisor...'Planetkill'...  I checked Amazon and 'Let the Galaxy Burn' in real book format is cheap.  I also prefer real books too, but we are downsizing our home and simplifying our lifestyle so it's ebooks from here on end....sigh.

Happy reads:biggrin.:

After reading this I'm tempted to nab Planetkill & Let the Galaxy Burn too... those classic old style covers are quite unique! I'd never heard of either and it just goes to show how much great content there is out there just waiting to be consumed. Maybe BL will re-print then at some point like so many other recent / upcoming titles. Really cannot wait for the Deathwatch & Rogue Trader Omnibuses to release!

After re-reading some of the old stuff, I'm very pleased to see how well they have held up over time. Not dated at all.... even Ian Watson's stuff holds up well ('Space Marine' and 'Inquisition Wars' trilogy), although I still maintain the he was stoned while writing them:turned:.

There's another short story anthology coming next week, marketed as a Getting Started in the story of the game, so hopefully will have a broader range of subject matter than Marines shooting things in the face
