"Venit Hora" - Swords Of Davion

I've been out of the hobby for a few years but 8th ed has dragged me back in.

This is what I've managed to paint up so far. I'm simple greening a ton of my old homebrew marines and moving them onto an updated version of the chapter colours.

LYexAuz.png

I've started work up of an IA that will cover the chapter's history, explaining why the heavy use of jump marines, mkiv armour etc. The cliff notes version is they suffered almost total destruction in 850 M41, managing to rebuild leading up to the Dark Imperium era, only to lose their chapter homeworld to the warp riff. The chapter now operates in and out of the Davion sector evacuation fleet, trying to find the sector's population a new home.

Anyway, on to the minis.

mdkqXFR.jpg

Squad Samson, new intercessors that have recently joined the fleet giving the Sword's a much needed numbers boost.

iNMAahu.jpg

1st Company Vanguard Squad Aurelius, the last members of the 8th company that sacrificed themselves to save the chapter.

IwYet8l.png

Owain, Bearer Of The Black Sword , The  Exile. He has a long path ahead of him before he can rejoin the chapter. Owain will have to perform 12 mighty labours to prove himself worthy of rejoining the chapter's ranks.

Hellblaster Squad - Squad Lucan. Like Squad Samson they are newcomers to the chapter.

Well that's all for now. This month I'm aiming to get the Comtemtor dread and Squad Teilo done and dusted from the list below.

Very cool, I like all the info provided as well. Question though, according to the fluff you've provided shouldn't Owain Bearer of the Black Sword have a white hand? Or is that more of a personal thing? I really like the idea of some Brothers seeking redemption for slights against their honor.

If and when I start a new chapter I may have to barrow some your ideas, especially that redemption thing. You may want to omit the roster list though or remove the points costs. Might be in violation. But all in all I really dig these dudes.

Cheers! Well spotted about Owain, your right about the white hand being more of a personal thing, in addition, the position of exile strips him of all ranks/honours/customs of the chapter.

Edit: I'll edit the image with the pts values when I get a spare second.

House Davion? For shame, freebirth! Clan Wolf here! Wolf's Dragoons since '84! Cheers!

Haha, I always thought that clanners had cooler mechs.

Nice.

But a real shame you didnt go with a tradition Davion color scheme.

A real missed opportunity

Been a Davion since 1988

Oh mate that's awesome. The OG scheme is pretty cool but I intended the davion reference to be a sly reference rather than an all out homage.

This is simply awesome! It's great to see another DiY chapter out here on the forums and the mini's to go with it. I actually feel inspired to complete my army and post it here in the Hall of Honour as well. Well done sir!

Many thanks! You should totally do it, it's a great motivator to get stuff done and you get to talk to a wider community than just your FLGS.

Speaking of which. November oath is done and dusted:

Presenting Swords of Davion Relic Contemptor, Fmr Devastator Marine Orhalt. Orhalt fell during the recapture of of a damaged, drifting gloriana class battleship. His sacrifice during the campaign to secure the vessel earnt his place in one of the recovered Dreadnaught chassis.

PHAH! Clans killed Battletech... 3025 for LIFE!

Clans had some seriously cool mechs though. Mad Dog and Loki for lyf.

Nice.

I was always House Steiner, myself.

I like what you're doing with this whole thing.

Cheers mate!

I've managed to finish off the other half of Squad Aurelius for this months oath.

And all together with the other half of the squad from last month.

When I built these guys I had this in mind:

"Make them look like they are totally ready to drop the hottest rap album of the 42nd millennium."

I think I've nailed that by trying to make them all look like they are about to challenge some heretics/xenos/slightly misguided members of the imperium in close combat.

Very well done sir:tu: I like everything you've done here!

Thank you!

I've neglected this thread a little due to moving interstate for a new job.

Introducing Swords Of Davion Squad Freeman Intercessors

tLoUrzp.png

The Intercessor is packed with options. The only criticism I have is the lack of possibility in the legs/torso.

ga4bSUN.jpg

The anniversary sarge is a great model, but still short of it's lofty Australian $55 price tag imho. Still the model was a joy to paint. Freeman was promoted to his status before the Primus contingent joined the swords. As a result his blade is a ultramarine patten gladius and like the rest of his primus betheran he has been trying to find his place in the chapter proper.

S0oOiS3.png

This month's challenge was a little bit of gore on your models. This changed my plan and forced me to use a non helmeted head. Let me just say that Blood for the blood god is a magical paint and the hype is very real. This mini is also the 1st miniature's face that I've been happy with and I have to thank the people over at warhammer tv for providing some key hints and tip that got me over the line.

Now I've knocked these guys over, I only have the 5 man Crusader Squad (Squad Teilo) and the 10 man Assault Squad (Squad Morien) to fill out the rank and file of the 2000pts army. Next month I'm planning on tackling Lieutenant Ulther Vermillion 'The Red Fox' of the second company. Ulther is a marine that follow's the 'old way' of the Swords of Davion and as a result is a brutal, no holds barred close combat fighter, caring little for anything but glorious combat.

In other news due to my interstate move I didn't have the time to do a Sword's unit for Jan. I did have time to crack out 5 Escher gangers. I know they are a little off topic for this post but I thought I would put them up anyway to give the thread some more content.

Good job on the Primaris and the House Escher members.

Thanks mate!

Real nice work, looking forward to the expansion of the Swords of Davion chapter!

Cheers! The work on here and the positive members of the community are really inspiring!

Speaking of, here is the newest addition, presenting Lieutenant Ulther Vermillion 'The Red Fox' of the Swords Of Davion:

I5VeWau.png

I had to do a bit of a fanfic thing for this month as well as some battle damage due to an Oath Challenge that is run on another website. So here goes. Brace for bad writing chaps, we're going in!

Lieutenant Ulther Vermillion 'The Red Fox' of the Swords Of Davion

Ulther Vermillion. The Red Fox. An Astares that is seemingly always knee deep in the blood of foes and allies, right in the maelstrom of the most brutal close quarters fighting he can find.

He represents the 'old' way of the Swords of Davion, seeking personal glory over all other matters. Vermillion earnt his title during the battle for fox pass, where his entire squad died to due to his unwillingness to retreat in the face of a blood axe horde. Instead he and the squad held the narrow pass for 6 nights and 7 days until he was relieved as the sole survivor, found covered grevious wounds and rent armour. Standing alone amongst the corpses of Astares and Orks alike....

Ahem.

This guy was a joy to paint and I loved figuring out how he was going together. Next up is 5 crusader marines and an Assault squad!

LT Vermillion looks good, but why is he wearing the Chapter symbol on both shoulders, instead of the skull that marks an HQ unit's right shoulder?

Well spotted. The Swords are slightly codex deviant on this one. Wearing the white sword on both pads is a huge honor to them.

Real talk though, freehanding skulls is hard.

Squad Teilo ready for action!

Super happy with how the sword turned out. I nearly scraped and restarted it a few times but I'm glad I pressed on. Many thanks to Warhammer TV's duncan for his video on the effect.

This month in the SA oath challenge I had to do some freehand. I normally try to do squad markings and the like so I felt like I had to push myself to fulfill the challenge in spirit. So on the Sarge's leg it depicts Sword of Davion droppods screaming down to the surface of Davion as the Crixus Madicum  opens.

Teilo's background is that they were among the 1st wave to drop down onto Davion as the Crixus Madicum opened. They were also the last Swords Of Davion astartes to leave the planet as it was evacuated, bravely buying time though blade and disciplined bolter fire.

In game terms, they will ride around with the Chapter Exile in a razorback, hopefully acting as a firebrigade unit.

I also finally finished my table baseboards and toppers! Nailed the colour matching on the paint, highlight mix and ink using hardware store products + a matt varnish spray. All it needs now is some sweet terrain....

What's on the Squad leader's left kneepad? A picture of three drop pods reaching for a battlefield, intended to commemorate a battle against the Marines' most hated enemy?

Hell yeah it is. It's a couple of drop pods thundering towards Davion as the Crixus Madicum opens. Teilo and his squad where the last troops to leave Davion during it's evacuation.

5 more Swords of Davion step into the long night.

HUsg9Ry.png

It's part one of Assault Squad Morien, heroes of the Battle For Loholt!

I reckon I've leveled up my freehand a little with these guys thanks to a cunning tip from the WHTV stream on Friday. Turns out holding our hand in one spot, making repeated similar movements while rotating the model = better looking straight lines. On that note, I thought crossed swords would ape the fast attack codex symbol in a very Sword of Davion manner. :)

I've also worked on my lighting setup following this guide: https://talesfromtheaaronorium.com/2018/05/25/photographing-miniatures/ still need to do work on my shadows and bringing out more of the drybrushing/highlights. Still, big improvements have been made compared to this time last year.

Well done. The custom insignia look great- I like the crossed swords replacing the Codex compliant Assault Squad insignia. Will you design more, maybe have a skull impaled upon a sword as HQ insignia?

Ah many thanks! I would totally run with the skull idea but I don't think my freehand skills are quite there yet. Maybe after another year or so of practise. :)

Hey mate looking good, great stuff in this thread. Just out of curiosity, what shade of green have you used on your Escher gang, it’s a really striking colour?

Cheers mate! Citadel Moot Green is the main colour there.

From memory the process is:

black under coat

2 thin coats of moot green

Ink with army painter dark tone

Relayer/semi drybrush in moot green as required. may take 2 new coats to not be streaky.

Here's the bit I don't remember 100% I highlighted with a 85/15ish % mix of  moot green and flash gits yellow. If you're looking for a harder hightlight you could try Skarsnik green. :)
