7th to 8th Space Wolves issue :(

I’ve come across a possible issue with my Blood Claws and Grey Hunter squads.

When I first put them together, I was building them based on the 7th edition rules.

They stated that one grey hunter/blood claw in the squad could take a plasma pistol. And one grey hunter/blood claw could take a power weapon or power fist. So I decided to fit both to the same marine in 2 of my squads.

The Index for the 8th says.

One grey hunter/ blood claw can take a plasma pistol.

Grey hunter/blood claw squad leader can take the power weapon or power fist.

So if I make my 2 plasma pistol and power fist guys the squad leaders, am I breaching the rules?

Probably. A 'Blood Claw Pack Leader' is not a 'Blood Claw'. Also, a 'Blood Claw Pack Leader' lacks the option to gain a Plasma Pistol. A 'Wolf Guard Pack Leader' upgrade to a Blood Claw unit could be so equipped, but should probably also have extra fancy paint/conversions to indicate this special status and differentiate him from the 'Blood Claw Pack Leader' that will also be present.

This, mutatis mutandis, is also the case for Grey Hunter Packs.

You can always use them as a Wolf Guard Pack Leader for those units and it's perfectly legal.

Problem is I already have a wolf guard pack leader for both of the units :( With equally or more exotic options.

I’ve still not got into the rules yet (not even got my copy yet) and never really got to grips with 7th.

The only difference between Pack Leader and normal unit is Attack 2 vs 1.

As this is close combat does the Plasma Pistol give the Squad Leader an extra advantage in close combat?

Ahem. I trust you understand that 'rule fishing' like this is against the rules. Don't make a habit of this.

Not in close combat. Arguably it's more of a liability than anything, but now we're drifting off into force design philosophy which is a topic for the Space Wolf forum, or maybe homegrown rules depending on the direction of the tangent.

As it stands, I'm going to have to refer you to your handy rulebooks to study up on how combat works and why or why not you'll want plasma pistols on leader figures. Fortunately for you, the battle primer is both most instructive and freely available.

Doh! Apologies!

I’ve got a set of rules just not in my hands

Yet, although I may re-download the 7th Edition on my iPad and have a butchers to see if that sheds any light.

Thanks for the link I’ll take a look now! :)

Edit - how did I not know about this link *Facepalm!

Let's not get into list building / tactics please. If you wish to discuss that, then please take the conversation to the relevant section of the forum.

Continued non-rules-based discussion will result in this thread being locked.

A 7th Ed book of whatever stripe will probably only confuse matters further.

The Blood Claw Pack Leader I'd expect has the *Blood Claw* keyword so has access to their options surely as he is both a *Blood Claw* AND a *Blood Claw Pack Leader* they are not mutually exclusive...

Same reasoning for the Grey Hunters.

Wargear options aren't based on Keywords, they are based on model names.

For example, a Wolf Guard Pack Leader in a unit of Grey Hunters would have the Grey Hunter keyword as all models in the unit gain its keywords (unless otherwise stated). That Wolf Guard Pack Leader does not have access to a Meltagun or Plasma Gun even though they are an option for a Grey Hunter.

Not a space wolf player, but as a Tyranid player I'd suggest just rolling with it until your codex appears. The 8th edition Tyranid index invalidated some of my loadouts, which were then validated again in the codex. Fingers crossed for you mate.

I do think it's worth holding off until a Codex is out before making any drastic decisions but after feedback the writer of the Space Wolves Index added all previous weapon options from 7th edition back through the Index 1 FAQ/Errata.

The problem for the OP is that 8th has split unit leaders out as dintinct models with unique wargear options. After being involved with the original feedback to Simon Grant I don't believe the Pack Leader will be changed at all.
