Creating an Iron Warriors Daemon Prince - help with parts

I want a Daemon Prince for my Iron Warriors but the GW ones don’t appeal to me. I feel that, for the Iron Warriors, it should be more machine than demon, aka, more Iron than flesh.

Looking for alternatives, I saw some interesting conversions but not exactly what I wanted either. Until I run into the Cryx models for Warmachine. In the end I’ve bought the Corruptor/Reaper/Malice kit that would officially give these 3 variants:

While I actually love the model as it is, I would like to modify it a bit to look more 40k-ish but I am not sure how. I was originally thinking of kitbashing using a head that would look closer to the skull of the IW and adding something to make it a winged-daemon prince, preferably not actual wings but something like a thruster, although I fear this would look ridiculous. I actually like the arms that come in the kit, although it could be interesting to have an option for a heavy cannon instead.

Do you know of any parts that could fit or should I venture into the world of greenstuff? Do you have any other ideas? Thank you beforehand!

Well, I can understand not liking the Deamon Prince kit, as it is a bit, er, limited.

However, to use a WM model in a public 40k environment (as opposed to games at home with friends), it probably would benefit from some reasonable conversion.

I certainly think the head and arms are good candidates for replacement, and I would be tempted to replace the legs with something beefier too.

Despite my earlier comment about the DP kit above, you might well find that the arms and legs are worth getting from a bits site to convert your Jack from. I presume a suitable head could come from something like the Defiler kit?

One word of caution though; I know a lot of Privateer plastic models are actually a hard PVC material rather than the usual hard styrene GW uses; as this Jack has been re-released, it may be styrene rather than the PVC its predecessor was.

- If it's styrene, then fantastic - carry on as you would with a GW kit. If it is, the parts will come a sprue.

- If it's PVC, the parts will come pre-cut in little bags. With PVC, you need to realise that it can only be glued with superglue, and that it is pretty difficult to clean up or file smooth. However, if you need to re-pose any parts (or straighten any out) you can do this easily by dunking the part in a bowl of boiling water; the part goes quite soft allowing you to reposition as you want, and it will then harden over the next 20 seconds or so whilst you hold it in the new position. To tidy up PVC after you have cut and filed it, scrub the area firmly with a brass wire brush (like this), to  get a smooth finish again.

Another thing to consider would be using some brass etch (or maybe transfers?) to add Iron Warriors or Chaos symbols to the big carapace - it would be a great place for them, and would really help to make it obvious that this is specifically an Iron Warriors model. ;)

First of all, thanks everyone for the replies!

The model comes in a sprue so I don't have to panic just yet! I also only play with friends and in a non-GW store so proxies/non-GW parts are fair game. ;)

You are right about the legs, they give it an animalistic or even insectoid flair. The heads of the Defiler kit could be a bit small but I can check as I have one lying around.

I have to check how brass etching works because I definitely want to add some IWs symbols not just on this thing but on other minis as well.

If it's in your price range, a FW Decimator would give excellent parts for an IW prince.  It really captures the daemon engine vibe.  Alternately, parts from a Forge/Maulerfiend?

There's also the option of basing him on an Iron Circle or Domitar model, and change up the arms and head or whatever you feel like?

Actually, I was considering getting some FWs models but I am not too familiar with their range yet. I had considered getting an Iron Circle Automata but to use as a dreadnought. Now that I think about it, though, it's head and legs though could be a perfect bit for this DP.

The Decimator I wasn't familiar with and you are absolutely right, it's a perfect model to scavenge parts for an IW DP. Thankfully, FW sells its arms separately so I will probably get one of the heavy cannon options.

The warmachine model would be ok if you swapped out the head. And then the torso, legs and arms.

As per others. Dreadnoughts, defilers, sentinels, obliterators, iron circle, perturabo, etc.

So... just keep the shoulders is what you are saying?

He's just being facetious by suggesting that you change all the components.

It's disappointing in the painting and modelling section that people can't be more constructive, especially to people new to the forum, but there you go.

I imagined that was the case but I tried to go for a nicer response. Why try anything different, right?

I think I'll be ordering Decimator parts and if they don't fit properly I'll go for the full thing.

Arms definitely don't look 40ish, something like Dreadnought or Decimator could work :)

Head as well, you'd want some kind of daemon head.

Finally, fleshy bits from green stuff. This is what you want to have (check the Helbrute or Fiends kits for inspiration). This is where the machine and the living meet, and would be good to add some bulk to the thinner parts of the model.

I'm definitely going to order Decimator/Dreadnought arms from FW. I checked the spare heads I had from the Defiler Kit and it seems like they can fit nicely.

Not sure what to do about the legs as I think they could be bulkier. I'm pondering using Decimator or Iron Circle Automata legs or go for a cheaper option and track the original daemon prince legs on ebay since they seem to have a similar shape to the ones this model has.

As for 'wings', I'm thinking the thrusters of the DP kit could work.

I have used the Warmachine kit in an unfinished conversion for a Magos and it certain,y has potential. The hardest part was hollowing out the shoulders to make room for the AD Mech arms...

For the IW look, I think adding hellbrute or decimator arms should be fine. I also feel the legs should be changed to something more power Armour like. Or go the way of the flesh metal and give it a snake like lower body?

A good thing about this model is that the shoulders are mostly hollow! One possible problem I'm seeing now with the Decimator arms that FW sells is that they seem to be sold from the elbow so modelling the rest of the arm might be necessary.

For the legs I think I want the power armor look but I am still not sure. There was that very cool conversion that used a Necron wraith:

But I am not convinced.

I originally thought about that but since this forum section was specifically for questions about modeling I went directly here and then totally forgot to say anything in there. Thanks for reminding me!

I didn’t know about Insane Psycopath’s thread, I’ll check it out!

just for nostalgia, here is one my WIP shots

and no, on mine the shoulders were solid and I had to cut and dremel out the ball socket arm joints ;(

They must have changed that in the new release of the model, since it seems to be the same one!

Did you ever finish it?

I'm sorry but that image just makes me think of an old man walking.

Now I can't unsee it!

I quite like the image of wheezing sack of old organs in a cybernetic shell when it comes to Mechanicus :)

And I got sidetracked by other things - espescially when they teased Dark Mechanicum and I thought I would wait for some official rules or fluff.

I constantly feel the need to add spikes and chains and chaosy things ... Which does not seem right early HH. That is what keeps my HH stiuff in limbo. The Gods just want me to spike things up.

Well, that and really lax painting discipline

Definately look at:

  • Iron Circle: With a few daemonic bits (look at the Bloat Drone for inspiration!) will look like an Ace DP.
  • Dark Eldar: Talos etc have some nice fleshy/ metal hybrids that look straight out of the Dark Mechanicus
  • Necrons: Quite a few bits, but you need to rough them up and add skulls etc - they look too clean otherwise IMO
  • Ad Mech: Kastellans, Cawl & the walkers would make some cool starting points!

A blast from the past which might help with inspiration (not my work):

This Daemon Prince is by @Chronophague who hasn't been around in ages. Since this isn't my work, I can't with how this conversion was done though most of it is relatively obvious. More picture here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/album/13915-chronophagues-iron-warrior-daemon-prince/
