Thousand Sons and Chaos Strategems?

Quick question for everyone here; I distinctly remember reading something regarding Chaos marine strategems and Thousand Sons being able to be effected by them so long as we match the keywords involved (Vets of the Long war being the biggest concern)  Main requirement being a Detachment from the Chaos codex. 

So If I took a black legion detachment + Thousand Sons as the rest of my army I would get access to those strats. 

I remember reading it but I cannot find *where* I read it. Anyone know off hand where I can find the GW statement on this?

It's in the FAQ from the death guard codex. i would give you a link but i'm not sure that's allowed.

 

Q: Is it possible to use a Stratagem from Codex: Chaos Space Marines to target a unit from Codex: Death Guard? For example, can I use the Tide of Traitors Stratagem on a unit of Cultists from a Death Guard Detachment if I have an Alpha Legion Detachment and a Death Guard Detachment in a single Battle-forged army? A: Yes – if you have access to a Stratagem because you have an appropriate Detachment, it can be used on any permitted target: they do not need to be from that Detachment. In your example, the Alpha Legion Detachment gives access to the Chaos Space Marine Stratagems, and Tide of Traitors can be used on any Chaos Cultists – this would include any Chaos Cultists from the Death Guard Detachment.

Honestly this is unofficial and the above answer will give you what you need but these strategems will largely be copies for Thousand Sons. I’m trying them out tonight I’ve resisted thus far but need something new to try.

considering what the FAQ states; we can assume Vets of the long war, Daemon engine, killshot, and a few others will be just like the chaos codex (copies for death guard will probably ALSO be copies for us) 

 

So I most certainly will use these to even the playing field, its getting harder and harder being a non-codex list in these days lol.  I still pull decent weight around (its never just a tabled-slaughter) but I feel on the back foot, If I can take a sorcerer-aux and get access to these buggers bet your bottom dollar ill do it.

Just watch out for things that aren't keyworded. Daemonforge for example doesn't work on us as it needs a "Chaos Space Marine" target (and we're not Chaos Space Marines...).

 

I personally put my Forgefiend in the CSM detachment in order to use it.

We have both chaos and heretic astartes keyword so technically we are chaos space marines. No?

A "Chaos Space Marines" detachment has a very specific definition in the codex and it explicitly does not include Thousand Sons or Death Guard. See pg. 156.

Just watch out for things that aren't keyworded. Daemonforge for example doesn't work on us as it needs a "Chaos Space Marine" target (and we're not Chaos Space Marines...).

Also, for others who are wondering, it says on pg. 158 that Auxillary Support Detachments do not count for the purposes of unlocking Stratagem use.

 

I would suggest either one big tank in an Aux Superheavy Detachment (which isn't included in that clause), or an Outrider with a Sorcerer and 3 individual Chaos Spawn. If you're planning on running heavy air support, a Flyer Wing could work too.

 

You could also get away with putting your Dreadclaws in an Outrider if you use any, since they can specifically transport EITHER troops of the same Legion OR the same Mark of Chaos.

Well that is a slightly bigger tax then I was expecting; but hey a unit of cultists isn't bad I guess......hopefully CA has some of the stuff were getting anyways, I hate having to use shenanigans just to keep up with some of the BS other dexs can do currently. Usually I just ask my opponent if he is okay with VOTLW, "the great sorcerer" and the Tzeentch spell-swap abliites being used by me if i dont have another detachment, usually they are fine with it.

Oh I see. I missed that :) Thanks for the page reference... We really need that codex. I thought we could use the renegade chapters stratagem by default...
