Removing Shapeways decals

Recommended Posts

So, I've placed some of shapeways 3D printed decals on my miniatures and they look great. The problem? I've had a sudden desire to amend my original plan and these no longer work on my guys (well they may, I'm asking this as a backup). They are all painted, but can anyone think of the least damaging way to remove them? I'm more concerned about damaging the shoulder pad, I don't care if the decal gets destroyed.

I didn't even realize that the Shapeways stuff was soluble to styrene cement.  I thought it needed to go on with superglue.

If it's Sahpeways 'FXD' printing process, then that's Polyjet and absolutely not soluble using organic solvents. I suspect you're correct, and the shoulder pad melted bonding with the surface of the printed icon. You might be in luck and have the parts pop right off. Additionally, Polyjet is very brittle so even if it was put on with super glue, you should be able to carefully peel, crack, and flake the material away, before you need to deal with the glue somehow.

So, I don't think it turned out that bad. What do you guys think? Now that I know it's possible, I have to decide if I want to.

If you're planning to apply a decal to that, you're going to have to make it really smooth.  I'd recommend sanding it rather than just painting over.

Yea, I'm thinking if I do it I'll be doing a decal. I know I'll have to smooth it out more. Honestly, that was barely any sanding what so ever.
