Corrupted Death Guard Legion

Recommended Posts

I am afraid I've caught a nasty case of filthy nurgle-itus!

I couldn't resist the new Death Guard Models, I was really inspired by the old Deathguard.org site of Ryan Powell in the early 00's, and thought i'd be really cool to do a CSM force along similar lines in the old legion colours, unfortunately this never really happened and I drifted out of the hobby. I have since returned to heresy era modelling but the awesome new DG range gives me this opportunity - at least until the Emperor's Children are re-done!

I wanted to put these guy well and truly in the heresy era, so that I can use them for both 30k/40k i've adapted the base models slightly by de-nurlging them as much as possible. I wasn't a big fan of silly belly mouths and overly 'deformed' tentacles, as I see these as more 'possessed' sort of features.

It'll be a welcome change painting up a highly weathered and dirty army after having to be extra neat and clean with my Third Legion pretty boys! Dirty, scruffy Death Guard are just about as far as you can get!!

The first 'tactical' / Plague Marine squad - I will add a Sgt/Champion to this unit, an icon bearer and special weapons eventually, so it can double between 30k/40/k

Brother Yegor Salas, a veteran of countless campaigns, bitter and conceited following years of being overlooked for advancement, on account of his terran lineage. Salas festers with seething bitterness and resentment, finding battle as one of the few avenues to adequately vent his frustrations. His modified mace is capable of cracking open power armour, as some of his erstwhile brethren have found out to their cost…..

gallery_162_16547_276606.jpg

Brother Taras Bolg, a callous and brutal warrior, nothing more than a blunt instrument lacking in both finesse and mercy. Unusually for a member of the Fourteenth Legion he favours melee and close combat over the methodical application of supressing fire. Often first into a breach, Bolg revels in close quarter combat, slinging his bolter aside and nonchalantly bludgeoning his foes with his wickedly spiked mace before grinding them into the ground with is heel.

gallery_162_16547_443346.jpg

Brother Varesh Lortz, a cold and efficient killer. A stalwart and proficient warrior who is both self-satisfied and inflexible with regards to his capabilities. His skill with a bolter is exceptional, easily gunning down foes at range. He displays a callous disdain in deviating from this preferred method of operation. Should he have cause to draw his combat blade his dour mood darkens into a spiteful temper, ensuring his blows inflict maximum damage without causing death.

gallery_162_16547_583.jpg

Brother Axel Kryst, a taciturn and aloof member of the squad who takes little interest in the fraternity or comradery of his brethren. He has a keen analytical mind and propensity towards machines and technology that should see him designated to the Great Company’s forge in due course. He currently finds solace in modifying grenades and other munitions to rain down noxious chemical death on his foes from afar.

gallery_162_16547_362046.jpg

Brother Feydor Boch, a volatile and reckless marine, quick to anger and prone to bouts of rage that leads him to blatantly disregard anything approaching tactical acumen by rushing into any breach in the enemy lines, tacking cruel glee in either blasting foes at point blank range with his bolter or slashing them to ribbons with his wickedly serrated dagger.

gallery_162_16547_259204.jpg

Brother Igor Vilich, a stoic and dependable veteran line marine. Highly proficient in his combat drills, Vilich has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time during a battle. He rigidly adheres to Legion Standard Operational Procedure and doggedly follows the chain of command, showing little patience toward his more reckless younger brethren. In times past Vilich would have been a beneficient mentor to the inexperienced, now he keeps his own council as he laments the downfall of his beloved legion.

gallery_162_16547_828689.jpg

Brother Sergol Lenitz, a somewhat jovial and cheerful individual, which is all the more remarkiable considering his Barbaran origin. He often makes light of situations, much to the annoyance of his fellows. Like Lortz he is a highly proficient infantryman, taking great pleasure in goading his brother and flaunting his own skills. Especially large for an Astartes, Lenitz delights in using his bulk to his advantage, smashing through obstacles rather than going around them, gracelessly ambling ever onwards whilst laughing maniacally.

++ CHEARON MORBIDEX ++

A creature of darkness and deceit, festering with bitterness and spite, lurking in the shadows, plotting and scheming how best to further his twisted ambitions. Chearon's heart was black long before his legion spat on their oaths of loyalty. A pariah on account of his psychic powers, Chearon lost his rank and status following Mortarion’s abolishment of the legion’s nascent Librarius. Many of the brutal atrocities committed by the Death Guard during the dying days of the Great Crusade can be attributed to him. Secretly using his psychic powers in defiance of his Primarch’s edict, he would bend peoples minds to his will, manipulating events to his advantage and concealing his darker proclivities

I've named this guy in honour of Kenshin's Chief Librarian from the sadly defunct Deathguard.org site. Such an inspiring site back in the day, when you could only dream of fleshed out traitor Legions!!

I've decided to give the Deathshroud an 'honourific' title, as befitting their status. CEB∂CT or 'Sevast' is a Russian title meaning venerable!

++CEB∂CT VOLGIR++ A veteran of countless battlefields and a staunch traditionalist, Veteran Brother VOLGIR still holds true to the original ideals of the Deathshroud. Although released from the vows of silence and secrecy since the fall of his Legion, VOLGIR will not speak to any outside his brotherhood. Whilst staunchly loyal to his Primarch, VOLGIR is a morose figure constantly lamenting the fall of his own fate and that of his legion. He shows an aloof disdain for his more righteous brethren who have fully embraced the lure of chaos, holding them beneath his contempt. As such his blessings by Grandfather Nurgle extend little beyond the bloating caused by the onset of the Destroyer plague that swept The Endurance. Like his Primarch, VOLGIR is a seething mass of bitterness and hatred, raging against every slight and wrong done to his beloved legion. He is content to let his anger fester and grow, taking his only enjoyment from bringing suffering and misery to those that bring him affront, however slight or inadvertent.

++CEB∂CT KRYSTAAL ++ A spiteful and vindictive creature, burning with untold contempt for all he considers unworthy of either the Legion or its new patron Nurgle. KRYSTAAL is a brutal and relentless warrior, wielding his manreaper with formidable skill. He does not suffer fools gladly and has little patience for anything he deems to be a lack of competence, many a victorious warlord have fallen foul to his manreaper for accomplishing victory in a less than acceptable manner. A devoted servant of his Primarch, KRYSTAAL has willingly embraced damnation and revels in his newfound power.

++CEB∂CT KOSTYA++. One of the first Barbaran inductees into the legion, KOSTYA fought alongside Mortarion in his battles against the Overlords of the Mountains. Originally a farmer who’s meager land holdings and family were destroyed and turned by the undead puppets of the Overlords, KOSTYA was left for dead, yet would not die, for such was his need for retribution and vengeance. He was one of the first to swear fealty to the newly arrived Mortarion, and has steadfastly served his master ever since. His already hardy constitution was first enhanced by the Primarch’s geneseed and latterly by the blessings of Nurgle. KOSTYA still believes he is fighting to protect the weak, his noble aims have been perverted by the belief that the weak can only be saved by embracing the benedictions of the Plague God.

Very fine work brother:yes: Great attention to detail. Definitely not the cute nurgley marines from the past that I so loved....... very menacing Nurgle Marines.... great job!!

I do think there is a jovial fun element to Nurgle, indeed the original realm of chaos book was sort of cartoony in those regards. However, I think there is a certain amount of cartoonyness in elements of the new range, the pox walkers and some of the Dark Imperium marines, which isn't helped by the GW paint scheme! I am glad you like the gritty look I was aspiring to!!

Awesome work, I didn't realise you had a thread over in the 'Hall of Honour'! Your painting just gets better and better

Cheers! I figured now was the time to start one! I am actually itching to paint up some more Third Legion stuff now, but I am trying to at least get these DG looking like a semi field-able force!

I gotta say, you combined those kits really well. Bravo, good legionnaire.

I really am impressed by the new DG range, and recent GW plastics. I am a veteran of mono pose Elf Spearmen and lead models, so working with this stuff is a dream!

Well the Angel finally cometh! And I forgot to update this thread!! Too much excitement I'm sure!!

It's been a lot of work with a good dose of procrastination before tackling the wings and smoke cloak! But it's worth it! I'll eventually add the two fly cherubs but I wanted the bulk of him finished for New Year!!!

++Brother Taron Borax++ A diseased and bloated traitor, with a soul as black and rancid as his body. Delighting in carnage and havoc, his only joy is raining down fiery death on his enemies from afar......

++Brother Sergeant Cyrus Glutt++ A hulking brute of astartes, even before the blessings of the Plague father. Glutt is a cold, taciturn figure suited to the task of laying down suppressing barrages and calculating targeting points for optimum application of fire support......

Heavy support Sgt, enjoyed this model as it was the first bare headed DG figure in the new range, trimmed his mutations and gave him a nice hairstyle instead!

++Brother Mahilm Grigorlov++ A stoic veteran of countless campaigns, Grigorlov is a consummate professional soldier with attention to detail bordering on obsessive. Always well equipped, he is somewhat sentimental; tinkering and field repairing his trusty wargear rather than replacing it.....

modified one of the Plague Brethren slightly, just to de-nurglify him a bit.

++ Apothecary Majoris Kasimir Sursok ++ A grim and solemn astartes, even by Barbaran standards, Sursok is a senior figure within the 3rd Great Company. He is wracked with guilt and being unable to prevent the blight afflicting his beloved legion, yet even he can not deny the potency of the plague father’s gifts. Enduring the rot of his body with the stoic determination the Fourteenth Legion are famed for, Sursok is determined he will one day day overcome the plagues ravaging the legion, and he is keen to find new subjects to experiment on….
