Forge World Grav-Chutes on Cadian models

Has anyone tried to fit these on to regular Cadian infantry?

I was thinking about building 20-30 drop troops for my Cadians that I would play using Elysian rules. The Grav-Chutes would give them a distinct look. Would you accept that as an opponent?

I'd have no issue personally, but I'd swap the heads and shorten the lasguns too.

Also, doesn't have to be FW grav chutes either - suitable third party stuff is good too!

Hope you post them up here when they're done? ;)

Edit:

Example of FW chute fit.

Edit #2:

Also, Catachan legs might look better with Cadian torsos? The 'Chan lasguns might be a better visual fit too.

I was planning to convert the Infantry that comes with the large christmas special box. Different heads are a good idea. Not a fan of the Elysian look though. If someone has a good source for Kasrkin-style heads or something else that has a special forces HALO jump vibe please share.

About the guns, I like the idea of a bullpup lasgun, bit it has to fit with the cadian models. Maybe just shortening the barrel of a Cadian lasgun could make for a "las-carbine" look.

edit: Something like this:

I can understand wanting something different from Elysians.

Have you had a look at Mad Robot Miniatures? They have a wide range of Cadian-compatible parts, and the quality is extremely high.

For the Cadian lasguns, you could just try cutting them. Or, perhaps consider something like a bolter with a lasgun clip and muzzle? Either way, a simple design and using easy/cheap parts is important I feel. Also, adding scopes to them is an easy way of getting a more "tacticool" look for them.

The Warhawks do look really cool. I'm super bad at greenstuffing though. Maybe it's time to learn a new skill.

Pig Iron Productions has some interesting head options for their System Trooper series. They're metal though. Any experience with their products?

I like the Forge World hostile environment stuff, but they don't appear to sell the heads separately. Buying the full set I would end up somewhere around 5+ euro per model.

Ive used pretty much every head sprue they make, I like their products a lot. Being IG scale the heads are small enough you don't even notice the metal difference.

Only recommendation I have is be sure to have a small pair of cutting pliers to remove them from the sprue (* not the GW plastic cutting ones)

The old Kasrkin models would be perfect for those Warhawks, and your drop troopers. They have armored legs and short carbine style lasguns. Sadly they’re only found on eBay now.

About the only other thing I can think of besides what’s mentioned by others above is to use the rebreather bits found on the Cadian command squad sprue. To take it one step further, you can use one of the HWT heads with the goggles. I haven’t tried this myself but it seems like it can work to achieve the look you’re going for.

Edit: just wanted to say I would be completely fine running regular Cadians as Elysians, with or without the drop packs you listed

Thanks for all the helpful input. Really appreciate it.

Unfortunately I can't go full third party, since I'm playing in my local GW regularly.

The idea to convert Cadians stems from two things: The christmas box is going to be an amazing deal, but I really don't need more line infantry. However I do like a uniform look for my army. My drop troops should stand out, but still be an integral part of the army, not a completely different model painted in the same colors. I think I will use Cadian legs, torsos and arms, with the Forge World Grav-Chute and one of the Pig Iron System Trooper heads. Maybe I'll add some green stuff details like knee and elbow pads if I can figure out how to.

Good idea. Unfortunately the rebreather bits seem to be either sold out or sold at a ridiculous price tag in every bitz shop I know.

Limited part swaps are fine. I already ordered two sets of the System Trooper heads from Pig Iron.

Not sure if there is a % rule. I guess just the base model has to be GW or something. I've seen the staff make people take models off the table though, not sure how much third party those were.

Next point on the agenda is the lasguns. Made this las-carbine prototype (unmodified lasgun below for comparison). What do you think?

If you have some Space Marines floating about, why not cut the front grilles off the mk7 helmets and use those on the Cadian heads? You'd need to trim the chin off the Cadians for a good fit, but they'd make for good rebreathers.

Similarly, trimming a Space marine backpack down is pretty straightforward, and they look a bit like the old Rogue Trader models:

As for things like knee pads, they can be quite simple - a simple ball of putty pressed onto the knees, and then flattened into an oval with your sculpting tool. When the putty is cured, use a little strip of plasticard, thin wire, thick foil, or cured putty to add a little strap around the legs to the kneepads.

With respect to the lasguns, I'd lose the Imperialis and make the casing a bit shorter. I would also leave the barrel as per the original, because I think it helps to "dress" the finished look.

You get pretty cool rebreathers in the Cadian Command Box as well. Cut off the pipe and box, trim the nose and it's pretty sweet.

Covered that already:

That said, as they fit against the model, a press-mould would work well enough to cast sufficient up for a couple of squads.

And, as H311fi5h is apparently getting the festive season AM box, he should get a Cadian Command squad (with five rebreathers to make press-moulds from) in the set! ;)
