Character duels: Who beats whom (Mathammer)

SixOfOne

Recommended Posts

This is a thread purely to work out the duelist capabilities of the Praetor level characters. It will not include generic characters, the Primarchs or characters that are mostly Psykers (Ahriman) or who lack a source of consistent AP2 (Sevatar is excused). Valdor will also not be included as he will beat everyone short of a Primarch. Mathammer also assumes that the characters are fighting with their optimal stats (So Khârn has Gorechild and the Nemean Reaver is a Knight-Errant) in a challenge in a vacuum. The line up is as follows:

Nemean Reaver, Eidolon, Erasmus Golg, Kyr Vahlen, Sigismund, Pollux, Sevatar, Autek Mor, Khârn, Typhon, Abaddon, Loken, Hol Beloth, Nomus Rhy'tan, Dynat, Hvarl Red-Blade, Endryd Haar and Jenetia Krole.

It is quite possible that I miss a rule or get the maths slightly wrong, I am not a Mathematician (Unless you count History as Mathematics for some reason). If this happens, then just point it out and I'll update the calculations.

Eidolon loses this one as he cannot ID Haar with his hammer.

Eidolon vs Jenetia Krole:

Krole strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times (0.7689 ID), wounding 1.79923 (0.7689 ID) times, causing 0.89962 (0.3845 ID) wounds after saves.

Eidolon strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.075 times, causing 1.0375 wounds after saves

Krole wins in the 3rd round as she strikes before Eidolon.

TL:DR- Eidolon is a very good challenger even without the bonuses he gets for charging. Out of the above characters he only loses 4 fights. From this, a general rule would be to not throw him at characters with T5 or EW with high damage outputs and to stay away from Sigismund like the plague.

Applaud you for doing these calcs, SixofOne.

Sig beats everyone here, so he's almost as redundant as Valdor I suppose

Yeah thanks man, I'm sure this is a lot of tedious work. I'm loving it so far though!

The thanks is much appreciated. I'll attempt to get it all done by the end of the week, but I won't promise anything. Sigismund is pretty much redundant as he will most likely win every fight. It will be interesting to see how long it takes him to kill them all though.

Loken strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2 times, wounding 1.32 times and causing 0.66 wounds after saves.

Kyr Vahlen strikes with 4(5) attacks, hitting 2 (0.5) times, wounding 1.32 (0.415) times, causing 0.66 (0.2075) wounds after saves.

Kyr Vahlen wins thanks to the servo arm.

Kyr Vahlen vs Hol Beloth:

Kyr Vahlen strikes first with 4(5) attacks, hitting 2 (0.5) times, wounding 1.32 (0.415) times, causing 0.66 (0.2075) wounds after saves.

Hol Beloth strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.075 times and causing 1.035 wounds after saves.

Nomus (Round 1) strikes with 3 attacks, hitting 2.25 times, wounding 1.8675 times and causing 0.93375 wounds after saves.

Nomus strikes first with 3 attacks, hitting 1.5 times, wounding 1.245 times, causing 0.6225 wounds after saves.

Kyr Vahlen wins.

Kyr Vahlen vs Dynat:

Kyr Vahlen strikes first with 4(5) attacks, hitting 2 (0.5) times, wounding 1.32 (0.415) times, causing 0.66 (0.2075) wounds after saves.

Dynat strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.5 times, wounding 1.245 times, causing 0.6225 wounds after saves.

Kyr Vahlen will lose this as Dynat will ID him in 2 rounds.

Kyr Vahlen vs Hvarl:

Both characters strike simultaneously. Kyr Vahlen strikes with 4(5) attacks, hitting 2 (0.5) times, wounding 1.32 (0.415) times, causing 0.66 (0.2075) wounds after saves.

Hvarl strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times, wounding 2.2067 times, causing 1.10338 wounds after saves.

Hvarl wins.

Kyr Vahlen vs Endryd Haar:

Kyr Vahlen strikes first with 4(5) attacks, hitting 2 (0.5) times, wounding 1 (0.415) times, causing 0.5 (0.2075) wounds after saves.

Haar (Round 1) strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 3.201 times, causing 1.6005 wounds after saves.

Haar (Round 2 onwards) strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 2.739 times, causing 1.3695 wounds after saves.

Haar wins easily.

Kyr Vahlen vs Jenetia Krole:

Krole strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times (0.7689 ID), wounding 1.79923 (0.7689 ID) times, causing 0.89962 (0.3845 ID) wounds after saves.

Kyr Vahlen strikes with 4(5) attacks, hitting 2 (0.5) times, wounding 1.66 (0.415) times, causing 0.83 (0.2075) wounds after saves.

Krole wins in the 3rd round of combat.

TL:DR- Vahlen is an overall good character. However, in 30k the powerfist is king due to a lack of EW unless you have a lot of attacks. This shows here more than some other match-ups as while Vahlen will generally out damage other characters he will be killed regardless through ID.

Sigismund

There's very little point me actually doing this one...

Sigismund vs The Nemean Reaver:

Both Characters strike simultaneously. The Nemean Reaver has 3 attacks, hitting 1.5 times, wounding 0.99 times and causing 0.495 wounds after saves.

Sigismund has 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times, wounding 1.5378 times, causing 1.15335 wounds after saves.

Sigismund wins easily.

Sigismund vs Eidolon:

Sigismund strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

Eidolon (doesn't) strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.075 times, causing 1.0375 wounds after saves.

Sigismund kills Eidolon in a challenge before he can strike back.

Sigismund vs Erasmus Golg:

Sigismund strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

Erasmus Golg (doesn't) strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.5 times, wounding 1.245 times, causing 0.6225 wounds after saves.

Sigismund once again kills Golg before he can strike back in round 1.

Sigismund vs Kyr Vahlen:

Both characters attack simultaneously. Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

Kyr Vahlen strikes with 4(5) attacks, hitting 2 (0.5) times, wounding 1.32 (0.415) times, causing 0.66 (0.2075) wounds after saves.

Sigismund wins of course.

Sigismund vs Pollux:

Sigismund strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.692 wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Are you seeing the trend here?

Sigismund vs Sevatar:

Sevatar strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 1.65 (0.2805 rends) times and causing 0.2805 wounds after saves (0.14025 rends).

Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times, wounding 1.9339 times and causing 1.4504 wounds after saves.

Sevatar actually puts up a bit more of a fight!

Sigismund vs Autek Mor:

Sigismund strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.038 times, causing 1.52856 wounds after saves.

Autek Mor strikes back with 3 (4) attacks, hitting 1.75 (0.585) times, wounding 1.4525 (0.468) times and causing 0.72625 (0.234) wounds after saves.

What a surprising turn of events! Sigismund wins once again!

Sigismund vs Khârn:

Both characters attack simultaneously. Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times, wounding 1.9339 times and causing 1.4504 wounds after saves.

Khârn strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2.64 times, wounding 1.7424 times, causing 0.8712 wounds after saves.

I like to imagine that Sigismund has to try a bit against Khârn.

Sigismund vs Typhon:

Sigismund strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

Typhon strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 1.65 times and causing 0.825 wounds after saves.

Never would have guessed this result...

Sigismund vs Abaddon:

Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times, wounding 1.9339 times and causing 1.4504 wounds after saves.

Abaddon strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.075 times and causing 1.0375 wounds after saves.

If only Sigismund had actually fought Abaddon properly before he was over 1000.

Sigismund vs Loken:

Loken strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2 times, wounding 1.32 times and causing 0.66 wounds after saves.

Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

The next fight should actually be more interesting...

Sigismund vs Hol Beloth:

Sigismund strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

Hol Beloth strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.075 times and causing 1.035 wounds after saves.

Hol Beloth joins the ranks of characters able to last more than 1 round against Sigismund, and one of the only ones without EW. Does take heretical sorcery to accomplish though.

Sigismund vs Nomus Rhy'tan:

Both characters attack simultaneously. Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

This fight will go on slightly longer.

Sigismund vs Dynat:

Sigismund strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

Dynat strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.5 times, wounding 1.245 times, causing 0.6225 wounds after saves.

Do you ever think Sigismund gets bored of this?

Sigismund vs Hvarl:

Both characters attack simultaneously. Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

Hvarl strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times, wounding 2.2067 times, causing 1.10338 wounds after saves.

Sorry Hvarl, but Sigismund is the better kingslayer.

Sigismund vs Endryd Haar:

Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times, wounding 1.5378 times, causing 1.15335 wounds after saves.

Haar (Round 1) strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.425 times, causing 1.2125 wounds after saves.

Haar (Round 2 onwards) strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.075 times, causing 1.035 wounds after saves.

Haar puts up more of a fight, but for no longer than the majority.

Sigismund vs Jenetia Krole:

Krole strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times, wounding 1.79923 times, causing 0.89962 wounds after saves.

Sigismund strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.088 times, wounding 2.5637 times and causing 1.9227 wounds after saves.

Sorry, Krole but you're going to need Valdor for this one.

TL:DR- Sanguinius put it better than me. Sigismund is Death's Champion. Almost anyone without EW will go down before they get a chance to strike back. If there's a character who lives up to his in universe reputation then it's Sigismund. He will even (just) beat a 3++ re-rollable Shield Captain. He will lose to Valdor though.

Sigismund vs Shield Captain:

Sigismund attacks 4 times, hits 2.33 times, wounds 1.54 times and causes 0.5082 wounds after saves

The Captain attacks 6 times (generating 1 extra attack), hits 3.5 times, wounds 2.9 times, causing 1.45 wounds after saves.

The Captain goes down in 2 rounds due to ID. It's ridiculously close though.

Sigismund vs Valdor:

Valdor attacks 6 times (generating 1 extra attack), hits 3.5 times, wounds 2.9 times, causing 2.175 wounds after saves

Sigismund attacks 4 times, hits 2.33 times, wounds 1.54 times, causing 1.155 wounds after saves

Valdor kills Sigismund in 2 rounds.

Ok, if your bent on making this calculations mayby you should explain what means what and why. For example 0.xxx vs 0.yyy tells most people nothing.

Also I see some strange conclusions. For example you sometimes count ID (Golg vs Hvarl) sometimes not (Golg vs Dynat).

How Sigismud wins vs Shield Captain if (by your calculations) the former does more damage?

etc.

Well, Sigismund VS Shield Captain is because Siggy IDs him, i'd assume.

It takes Sigismund approximately 2 rounds to cause 1 wound to the Shield Captain when in a challenge. This will ID the Captain, but Sigismund will be left on about 1 wound.

There is no point counting ID with Golg and Dynat as they both have weapons that will cause ID and will both strike at the same time. Therefore, ID is irrelevant in that situation. I have now said that in the relevant section though.

Pollux

Pollux vs The Nemean Reaver:

The Nemean Reaver strikes first with 3 attacks, hitting 1.98 times, wounding 1.3068 times and causing 0.4312 wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 2 times, wounding 1.66 times and causing 0.83 wounds after saves.

Pollux wins.

Both characters strike simultaneously. Eidolon strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 2.739 times and causing 0.9038 wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes with 3 attacks, hitting 1.5 times, wounding 1.245 times and causing 0.6225 wounds after saves.

Eidolon wins in 2 rounds. Mathematically Pollux can't ID Eidolon before he himself ID Eidolon.

Pollux vs Erasmus Golg:

Both characters strike simultaneously. Golg strikes with 3 attacks, hitting 1.5 times, wounding 1.245 times, causing 0.41085 wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Pollux wins.

Pollux vs Kyr Vahlen:

Kyr Vahlen strikes first with 4(5) attacks, hitting 2 (0.5) times, wounding 1.32 (0.415) times, causing 0.4356 (0.13695) wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Sigismund will kill Pollux before Pollux strikes.

Pollux vs Sevatar:

Sevatar strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 2.1978 times, causing 0.7253 wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Pollux vs Autek Mor:

Autek Mor strikes first with 3 (4) attacks, hitting 1.75 (0.585) times, wounding 1.4525 (0.468) times and causing 0.4793 (0.154) wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Thanks to being S5 Pollux will ID Mor on round 2. He outdamages Mor regardless.

Pollux wins.

Pollux vs Abaddon:

Both characters strike simultaneously. Pollux strikes with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Abaddon strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 2.739 times and causing 0.90387 wounds after saves.

Technically they will both kill each other simultaneously, but Abaddon does more damage so I'll give the fight to him.

Pollux vs Loken:

Loken strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2 times, wounding 1.32 times and causing 0.4356 wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Pollux wins.

Pollux vs Hol Beloth:

Both characters strike simultaneously. Pollux strikes with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Hol Beloth strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.075 times and causing 0.68475 wounds after saves.

Pollux out damages Hol, but Hol will win this one due to his ability to ignore the first wound he takes.

Pollux vs Nomus Rhy'tan:

Nomus (Round 1) strikes first with 3 attacks, hitting 2.25 times, wounding 1.8675 times and causing 0.616275 wounds after saves.

Nomus strikes first with 3 attacks, hitting 1.5 times, wounding 1.245 times, causing 0.41085 wounds after saves.

Pollux wins.

Both characters strike simultaneously. Pollux strikes with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Haar (Round 2 onwards) strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 2.739 times, causing 0.90387 wounds after saves.

Haar wins.

Pollux vs Jenetia Krole:

Krole strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.33 times (0.7689 ID), wounding 1.79923 (0.7689 ID) times, causing 0.59374 (0.2537 ID) wounds after saves.

Pollux strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Krole wins as she will ID Pollux on round 4.

TL:DR- Pollux is a very strong challenger. The combination of a S10 MC Powerfist and a 3++ is very powerful in 30k. Keep him away from characters who cause ID on all attacks in challenges though and remember that he only has a maximum of a 3+.

Who has more wounds (hitpoints) between Sig and the Shield Cap?

Love that Pollux beats Golg, very appropriate.

Kinda feel like Khârn might be a little underpowered now but I guess that the Heresy is supposed to be more about characters who don’t make it to 40K.

The Nemean Reaver strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.3475 times and causing 0.67375 after saves.

The Nemean Reaver wins easily, but this is a bad match up for Sevatar.

Sevatar vs Eidolon:

Sevatar strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 1.65 times (0.2805 Rends), causing 0.2805 (0.14025 Rends) wounds after saves.

Sevatar vs Sigismund:

Sevatar strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 1.65 (0.2805 rends) times and causing 0.2805 wounds after saves (0.14025 rends).

Pollux strikes back with 3 attacks, hitting 1.75 times, wounding 1.4525 times, causing 0.72625 wounds after saves.

Sevatar will actually win this one as he strikes before Pollux.

I realised here that I was calculating rends wrong as it should be based off the hits, not the wounds (A 6 is more likely the more hits). However, it will have only affected the Sevatar vs Kyr Vahlen match up. As everyone else up to that point either has EW or is using a PF variant. I will update that fight. My apologies for this.

Sevatar vs Autek Mor:

Sevatar strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 1.65 (0.561 of these rend) times and causing 0.2805 (0.2805 rends) wounds after saves.

Autek Mor strikes back with 3 (4) attacks, hitting 1.75 (0.585) times, wounding 1.4525 (0.468) times and causing 0.72625 (0.234) wounds after saves.

Sevatar just wins in round 4 thanks to ID.

Sevatar vs Khârn:

Sevatar strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 1.65 (0.425 rends) times and causing 0.2805 (0.2125 rends) wounds after saves

Khârn strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2.64 times, wounding 1.7424 times, causing 0.8712 wounds after saves.

Once again, Sevatar just wins in round 4 thanks to ID and I6.

Sevatar vs Typhon:

Sevatar strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 2.178 (0.561 of these rend) times and causing 0.37026 (0.2805 rends) wounds after saves.

Typhon strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 1.65 times and causing 0.825 wounds after saves.

And again, Sevatar just wins in round 4 thanks to ID and I6.

Sevatar vs Abaddon:

Sevatar strikes first with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 1.65 (0.425 rends) times and causing 0.2805 (0.2125 rends) wounds after saves

Abaddon strikes back with 4 attacks, hitting 2.5 times, wounding 2.075 times and causing 1.0375 wounds after saves.

Abaddon wins easily.

Sevatar vs Loken:

Both characters strike simultaneously. Sevatar strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 3.3 times, wounding 2.178 (0.561 of these rend) times and causing 1.089 wounds after saves.

Loken strikes with 4 attacks, hitting 2 times, wounding 1.32 times and causing 0.66 wounds after saves.

Sevatar wins easily thanks to Loken only having a 3+ armour save.

TL:DR- While Sevatar certainly doesn't live up to his reputation when it comes to Mathammer, he certainly isn't awful as he will kill most of the characters who don't use PF type weapons. However, even those fights are close as Sevatar will be close to death and round 4 is very important. That being said, Sevatar is likely much better in the actual game where he can take advantage of A Talent for Murder and prescience for a 97% hit chance against most enemies. This will help him get the all important rends (this situation results in 0.3298 rends and 0.547 wounds (against T4 2+ saves) after saves )  meaning that he can actually take down most characters in round 2 before they strike thanks to his I6. In this situation he wins against most of the characters on this list. He could probably do with at least a 2+ save though. Definitely keep him away from characters with EW though.

Talent for murder is the outnumbering thing though isn’t it? If so he wouldn’t get talent for murder as it’s one on one. And some of those models are in TDA and therefore outnumber him.

May be wrong, don’t have my rulebook.

Definitely feeling like Sev needs a buff. A 6/17 win/loss ratio doesn’t seem good enough for any Praetor level character, let alone the only person (in fluff) to duel Sigismund to a deadlock.

Do you think you could put in the number of turns each fight would go for? I'm interested in how long the fights last.

I certainly can. I'll go through and edit that in to the ones I've already as well.

Yes, A Talent for Murder requires outnumbering so he doesn't get it in this situation. He could probably do with a buff but it actually wouldn't need to be too much. A 2+ is obvious, but he would only really need something like 5+ rending or a variation on murderous cut (Krole) to become nasty. If you give him an AP2 weapon then he becomes almost a carbon-copy of Sigismund and him relying on rending fits the character better. That's just my opinion though. He also shouldn't get EW.

He could still get precognition though (even in 1v1), no?

This is true.

I know it is more work for the OP, but might it be worth calculating Sev with prescience, as well as Sev without?

I specifically left psychic powers out from the main list due to the amount of work. However against T4 2+, Sevatar will go as follows- 4 attacks, 3.72 hits, 3.4596 wounds (0.6324 rends), 0.5881 wounds after saves. This would result in a similar situation as if Sevatar has ATfM active as he will kill his opponent in round 2 due to ID. Precognition also makes Sevatar much, much tankier with a 4++ re-rollable save. Therefore he would likely beat almost everyone except Sigismund and maybe Haar.
