Thinking of dropping 40k for GW specialist games

I'm going to look into Necromunda but for now I'm taking a hobby break. Work/holidays are sucking my time. In the new year I think I'm going to work on painting up the ultramarine side of Calth and take a longer look at Necromunda. I also have a friend who is in to Blood Bowl and has wanted me to play so I think I will give that a shot.

All told, I think I've played a lot more Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Mordheim, and Battlefleet Gothic than 40k. I definitely prefer smaller games to bigger ones, because I can focus on making them better: better conversions, paint jobs, objectives, backgrounds, etc. That's not to say that I don't enjoy 40k.

I always find the term "specialist games" a bit irritating. There's nothing "specialist" about them - they're just games. I believe the term came from GW's idea that it was competing with itself; it seems like it's saying people should really be playing 40k, and maybe these other games on the side. The games were quietly swept under rugs not too long after they started using the term.

Except people kept playing them, particularly Necromunda, Blood Bowl, and Mordheim, and a slew of 3rd party miniature companies sprang up to provide model support. Player communities took over tweaking the rules.

Blood Bowl's player community/organization is the NAF (thenaf.net). Apparently the NAF World Cup in 2015 was attended by over 900 people.

All things Necromunda can be found on Yaktribe.games

My point is that GW discontinuing support did not kill these games (though whether you could find an opponent in your area is another matter).

As for 40k, I wouldn't sell too much. Lots of people take extended breaks from specific games or from the hobby altogether, and then come back to it later. If you're done with 40k for the time being, I suggest just putting your stuff in a box someplace so it's there if you come back to it in a year or five.

We were playing AoS Skirmish during the social media blitz about 8th edition.  We figured out pretty quickly that it was compatible with just the tinest bit of modification.  Heralds of Ruin takes it a step further and adds a lot of cool tweaks and cool things to try out.  I would recommend checking it out as well!  Our weekly gaming tends to have some sort of skirmish going on, with Heralds of Ruin being a major source for material we pull from.  Lots of awesome content there.
