Trying combined arms - Mitigating Moral

Hey folks,

so I decided to try out the stereotypical combined arms approach of the guard. (because those chimeras are just freaking expensive...)

Since I have virtually zero experience with this playstyle, I´m asking for some advise.

My infantry is just consisting of normal infantry squads and I´m playing Catachan so I should have LD8 most of the time.

From there on do you think it´s even worth investing in additional LD bonusses?

Things that I head in mind:

- Command Squad with banner (give the other guys GL or something to keep them cheap)

- Inquisitors (they are pretty cheap and you get smite & deny the witch on top of LD9)

- maybe even someone like Greyfax?

So yeah do you think it´s even worth investing or just bring more guys?

Edit: side question:

Do you give your screening stuff special weapons? I mean it´s just 7 points for a plasma gun, but also they are just there to die ^^.

I use cadians and have 2 inquisitors with my infantry, they are worth it IMO. 9 more points then a primaris, for a better profile and ld 9 buff. With catachans, you already have ld 8 with officers within 6" so banners can do the same job as well

Lord commissars and banners are handy for leadership buffs.

My screens will have a flamer or GL if there are points to spare.

If they're just for screening your expectations of them to stay and survive should be fairly low

A Lord Commisar is 40 points plus wargear. An inquisitor is 55 points plus wargear. The inquisitor gives an aura of Leadership 9, and for 57 points can provide psychic offense and defense, and bring a storm bolter to the fight. The Index says a psyker inquisitor may replace his chain sword with a weapon from the force weapon list, so it isn't required. Basically, a cheap inquisitor combines a commissar and a primaris psyker into one model, the only real issue being that you have to bring them in a separate detachment from your Astra Militarum.

Lord commissars are 55 basic. 50+ bolt pistol+ power sword (which are compulsory) they are the same price

I ran Greyfax in recent tournament. That ld 10 bubble was useful against hemlock wraithfighter and her condemnor boltgun did some work. Didn't manage to deny anything despite +1 but it felt pretty good to have two denies with a bonus. I took Dominate in the first game for lols and managed to mind control a space wolf lord and shot a thunderwolf with his overcharged plasma pistol.

In the end a cheaper regular inquisitor would have been more optimal.
