So after some serious time (and financial!) commitment, I guess this has become my latest hobby thread:

Painting Projects/Wips/Completed:

+ Starting off with my first attempts at the new line up since the codex release: WIP's (are at the end of this post)

+ Completed the above WIP's, and added 2 more!: LINK

+ Mortarion nearly finished in a picture with brother Magnus: LINK

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Not sure how I feel about these yet. It might just be they need some stark contrast in the fleshy areas, and contrast on the guns, etc, but I wanted to do some test pictures to get a feel for how these would look done:

Finished base colours and washes and most Metallics to get a feel for how these would look on the table.

Not done of course, but this should give a feel for how they would look on the table.

Thank you.

There's actually a decent amount of black/brown washes on the figs which brought the tone down a lot. I suppose I could go in there with a black line for greater separation. I guess I have to figure out if I'm sticking with this, or hitting the reset button for some crazier colours. (something like:Death Guard Apostles of Contagion )

But if I continue I guess I'll have to be careful to define the various metals a bit more..

Nice man. Nice.

I think they look nice the way there are. I personally prefer the cleaner or I should say crisper look to Death Guard. I think too many people get carried away with the grime honestly.

I think once you are finished, they'll look spectacular!

Thanks guys.

I think you're right I just need to finish them with some some dynamic colouring.

I agree that some people go very far with the ooozy, :cuss, degraded look. I guess that's the beauty of the ugliness! I tend to go for 'neater' looking figs so maybe that's why I look at it and think I went too far. lol

I do intent on some high contrast rashing of skin, perhaps red OSL lenses?

I think once you have the horns, tentacles, teeth, and other fleshy bits done, that will be enough once you've finished the metallics as well.

Save the OSL for the plasma weapons. Make the lenses glossy but not OSL. OSL eyes can be tricky, and you dont want the focus to be shifted to them.

I’m still contemplating OSL eyes... I’m certainly no expert on it but I’ve done it to varying degrees of success on many armies. The thing I’m finding is the red lenses can easily be drowned out by the muted, busy armour.

I realize it’s a personal thing. I just did OSL lenses on a AdMech army. I liked it. I get great compliments on it as well as people who aren’t fond of it. Lol I realize it’ll be a personal choice I make when I get there. That said there will probably be very little plasma in the army!

Also considering doing lenses normal but goggles OSL. We’ll see. I literally am making this up as I go. :)

Okay, well I actually went back and hit the high points with more of a 'dead flesh' finish. Just trying to add a bit of contrast which didn't really make it through the wash process that well.

I decided to do old school red lenses, 3 colours basically, and just keep the rest the same and finish tentacles/teeth, weapons etc, and see how it looks... I was surprised. They aren't quite done yet but I am powering through these models as fast as I can and the detail is ridiculous. (I bet there's a lot of half painted Death Guard out there!)

Should have some (more or less) finished pics of my test dudes soon!

So I completed the WIP pics after making minor adjustments shown in the previous pictures (to the zenithal highlighting... moved to a brighter/dead flesh kind of colour).

And you guys were right, the sheer volume of detail brings out enough interesting pieces that I think I'm going to leave it at this:

Couple of close ups:

I had a ton of fun doing these guys but it's VERY easy to get lost in the detail. There comes a point when painting these that I just said enough is enough, and wanted to call it done. When you've painted as many armies as I have I think you start to learn when you can burn out by doing too much detail on individuals. That's my personal believe anyway. I'm very happy with how these guys are looking!

Amazing sculpts. And I remember back in the day when wolves got their own plastics and I thought there'd never be more detail on a fig than those Wolves. These DG are crazy busy.

Really liking your Death Guard - there’s a crispness to them that defies the traditional image of rotting marines, yet works so well.

It looks like you base with the Death Guard Green before doing zenithal, with what you now say is a brighter/dead flesh colour. What do you use after the zenithal?

Wow!! Hats off to you good sir!! :-) they look amazing!

Got many more lined up on the hobby table?

I just got my original Dark Imperium Death Guard put together and primed. Honestly the entire line is so impressively sculpted, I'm just loving it. The detail is a time killer though. So next up I have to finish a few more guys that got the air brush treatment for fine detail (which takes the longest).

That includes Typhus who really intimidates me. I don't want to go too overboard with him. I want him to fit into this scheme. His base is huuuge too. :)

Really great scheme on the whole, but I think you can do without the neon green bits, especially since it's not consistent throughout the unit. Would help with the general over detailing too

Neon green; I don't know. To be honest an inconsistency can be a consistency of its own. All of my armies are so.. .neat. This is a departure for me. You'll note most of the tentacles are fairly unique. Purples, oranges, pink, grey/blue, and neon.

I may keep it more subdued in the future. I don't know.... still experimenting a bit. I appreciate the feedback.

Sick!

Can't wait to see a character!

Yea... a little afraid of Typhus, and the Foul Blightspawn are tough models. A lot going on, and a lot to goof up on. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

A couple of WIP shots just before Christmas:

Fun models to paint! I find them taking a little longer than I hoped with all the brass trimming and details, but they are nice. In game I was a little more hopeful of the Myphitic blight Haulers.... but I may try some more. I feel like I have to go with 3 or none!
