Hobby New Year Resolutions

Well, it’s that time of year again.

Whilst we have another 16 days of 2017, I’ve been thinking of what I want to achieve next year overall. You know, the usual “do more exercise” , “eat better” etc. Which I have achieved this year I’m some way, but can always improve.

However, I’ve not thought about my toy men as I usually do. My main task next year is to paint as much Chaos as possible (and finish my AoS death backlog). What about you guys? What are your hobby new year resolutions ?

I should totally finish my Dark Imperium Death Guard models (2 DI boxes, dear lord) which I put aside for my Iron Warriors.

Also, I should finally try to learn the basics of greenstuff so I get to work on my IWs Daemon Prince and female cultists.

And last but not least, if I do decide to buy Necromunda, to paint the models of course.

EDIT: And finally draw some 40K fanart because I wanted to do so for months and I haven't even tried!

These last years I have started doing New Years resolutions, but the other way around. When the the first snow comes, I decide on one project that I haven't gotten done during the year that I really wanted to do, and make sure it's done before New Years eve.

Doing the resolutions like 'normal' usually means they don't get done in my experience. I really need deadlines to get anything done.

This year I decided that I really wanted my entire Mansions of Madness set painted (sure, not 40k, but still quite the undertaking!) Only 3 models to go, but they are almost done and I got 2 weeks to spare! :D

I know that I will paint at least two gangs for necromunda next year, and I hope to get some more of my 40k stuff done.

My first and only resolution is to paint as much of the backlog as possible, without buying any new stuff, which is the hard part. I've got some 3k points of space marines waiting in the queue. Plus our first baby is coming in mid April so there'll be very little hobby time. Got to paint as many models as possible until then. :)

I've got two main goals: a reasonable one, and a unreasonable one. Well, not strictly true. I've got two unreasonable ones, just one's slightly more unreasonable, both on account of my painting speed.

I will get a 5000 point list of Imperial Fists (30k) painted to completion over the course of the next year.  Ideally I would like to up that to 10k, but that seems a bit ambitious in my opinion. In the past, I've had similar goals, but always nebulous on the details. This time, I've got lists drawn up for both, and the sad part is that asides from a few niggling details (a Deredeo dreadnought, some shotguns, and such) I already own essentially everything that I need to complete this projects.

This is not going to be the end of my Imperial Fists. As my signature says, I am VII Legion, now, forever, and always. This is just the level I want to achieve by this time next year.

Asides from that, I have plans to do a World Eaters Zone Mortalis army in the spring, but that's a little bit up in the air still, and if it doesn't speak to me after doing the first few models, I may yet set that aside. I'd also like to get my Astral Claws up and playable for 8th edition, and I'm contemplating about painting up the few Primaris marines I have as yet another chapter. But the Fists are the primary focus, and everything else, quite earnestly, comes second.

My reasonable goal is to finish getting my Ultramarines first company painted to completion (about 2/3 remaining). Even with a bunch of freehand and markings, 30ish TDA, 30ish PA, and a few tanks should be more than doable as long as I stick with it and don't get distracted by other projects (and I don't come to my senses and realize I'm painting a whole ton of Ultras, of all legions). I'm hoping the "tale of..." Idea floated in the painting forum comes to fruition to keep me motivated with all this blue.

My fairly unrealistic goal would be to completely finish my planned Ultras display project which, as it adds almost another 200 models to the project, is unlikely to be fully completed unless I can go manic with some batch painting

Participate in the ETL and the Call of Chaos if they happen. Take part in the Tyranid Army Growth Challenge with my nascent Genestealer Cult. Finish building my Alpha Legion, preferably in time for the ETL. Potentially build Legion #4, probably Black Legion but we'll see if the Thousand Sons book inspires me.

I've only been playing the model game for about 3 years. I've been a Warhammer fan for far longer - having come to the setting from tabletop RPG and Dawn of War - but the 40k models have been relatively recent. I was doing financially really well when I started. I acquired all three of my 2k point armies within the span of two months and started a fourth.

My gaming group was just excited to play. So when I got my models, it was enough to just slap them together and get games in. Painting be damned. Some real fun times.

My resolution is to sell off and replace each of those armies. I've grown dramatically as hobbyist since those days (and I had already been painting for a decade before that), and I want to step up the quality of my army appearance. One I intend to do with just tabletop-quality paint job, but tech out the vehicles and large models with LEDs and wound trackers and... Sound. Sound is going to be fun. The other will have no tech, but a contest quality paint job.

Because ambition.

I just don't think I can field Primaris Marines next to regular Marines - model wise.  And I just LOVE the look of the new Primaris models.  So, plans for 2018 - dispose of my stock of regular Marines, much of it unpainted (some still in the box).  Paint the Primaris kits I have, and perhaps (probably) convert them to regular (true scale) Marines.  Anyway, that's the plan.

After a long time of allowing myself to be distracted by half formed ideas and worrying about coming up with the perfect army list ( like such a thing exists ) I plan to complete at least 2000 points of HH 30k Imperial Fists .

And just to confirm my inability to stick to one project I also hope to paint up some of the Rogue Trader era 40k figures I have been buying for the last few months.

Personally I want to finish painting Aeonic Light and his brother Aeonic Night (a pair of command tanks), whom I acquired two years ago at Warhammer World. I hope to finish them before they hit their 3-year purchase anniversary. Gives me about four months. Also I'd like to finish my necron wraiths and the box of warriors I purchased a few weeks/two months ago (who will probably be last on the list).

Offload my dark imperium deathguard and finish the marine half are also on the list.

Oh, and actually build and paint whatever I buy as opposed to letting it sit for a year. *shrugs*

Also maybe start an Astartes scout cosplay, as I figure it's easier to do than a full set right off the bat.

(and work towards a physique to fit inside it and look anything half like a marine-in-training).

My new years resolution is actually rather simple.

Catalogue my models and the armies they are for.

Finish any half-painted models.

Pack models away until 40k makes some sense again.

Invest in a figter-based game by a different company.

I think I'm done with the travesty 40k has become for the foreseeable future. It was much simpler in 7th.

Paint quicker than a maximum of 1.5 models per month. Otherwise my backlog may well be something for others to inherit...

Actually sell some of the stuff I picked up only for certain bits and pieces with the intent of selling the rest on (eg. Dark Vengeance Tacticals and Terminators).

Finally paint those last two assault marines to complete a full company and stop getting distracted by things that are more interesting.

My house got trashed in a storm in August and life is still upside down so my new hear resolution to repair and renew my necromunda board and play the new game on it.

I've got some primaris to build/convert/paint to add to my three companies already painted and then there's the hope gw will finally release plastic battle sisters for me to spend hours painting and converting.

I intend on working a Tale of Eight Armies Project.  I have only a few people whom play in my local area and they paint about as fast as a glacier moves so I intend on puting together eight armies so I can actually get some games played.  That and I have a wardrobe full of armies I started when I last played the hobby, about ten years ago, so I certainly have most of the models I need.
