Help on picking colors...

It's almost Christmas, and I was thinking of celebrating the holidays by painting, modelling, and kit bashing a unit of Chaos Space Marines. I sat down and wrote out the backstory of an OCdonotstealplz Warband, a splinter of the Black Legion, but I got writers block in the one place it actually mattered: the colors. How do I stay original but also look good, and also fit into the canon? The warband worships Chaos undivided, arguably the hardest to do when deciding, and I'm kinda lost on what to do.

I use black and bronze instead of black and gold for the veteran core of my black legion warband, and I use it for all the trim, not just the top half. It’s not exactly a radical change from the norm, but it is noticeable. The fluff for my warband was that it has Khornate leanings, not Hounds of Abaddon complete dedication, just leanings, and brass is the metal of Khorne. You could do a minor tweak to a secondary color like that, or pick a armor piece like the left gauntlet, and paint it a different color on your models.

Depends on what you call "Chaos undivided".

Is it Chaos as a whole, or the addition of the 4 known Chaos God.

There was a supplement (traitor's hate ?) when we saw Black legion member black and bronze with one or two piece of equipement paint in the colors of their god (purple, blue, green and red).

You could got with something like this : Black and bronze and every units with one shoulder pad or leg in one of this 4 color (and fluffwise you could say they adore all chaos god one at a time and switch their colors with time, just like Abadon).

I do a similar thing with my E.C., instead of gold trim my line troops get silver and only HQs get gold. It's a small change but it has a disproportionate effect on the look.

I had always thought I would do much the same thing if I ever built up some B.L.

Regarding their worship of the pantheon, they pray to Tzeentch to guide them through the storms, they pray to Nurgle to salve their wounds, they pray to Khorne before battle, and pray to Slaanesh before attempting proposing a plan before meeting with the Warmaster.

Super general and stereotypical, but you could also have them praying to Tzeentch in battle, praying to Khorne for strength, etc.

The gods mean different things to different people, and will align by their own cult followings.

So if you want to go with the black and metallic theme, pick a different lense and "flair" color that will stick out. Since a lot of my guys were captured and indoctrinated Cadian white shields before they were mindwiped after candidacy selection, they have violet eye lenses, and I use the chaos fanny pack things sort of like Titan marks from destiny, denoting squad patterns and such.

For my own personal ease of use, the squad leaders and specialists heads/packs are painted blue, to make it easier to pick them out.
