"Effective vs cool/good looking" : alternative miniatures

Ever since the Rogue Trader days´ the slaves to darkness I have wanted a thousand sons army. My vison of 1KS includes actual rubiric marines, but as far as I can see and army with plenty of rubric units would play with an handicap. The same army can field tzaangors, but cultists won´t cut it in my vision. So I am stuck with rubrics, sorcerors, goats and daemon engines ( and perhaps spawn)

How would you feel if I wanted to use metal ushabties with great weapons (from the tomb kings range) based on 40mm bases as spawn for my 1ks army?

And necrosphinx on an oval base, painted as 1ks, for maulerfiend?

It seems like my vison of 1ks won´t be very effective on the tabletop, but I will finally live the dream from back in 1991 :-D

What does "plenty of rubric marines" mean if you are looking at an army?

If your talking 50 + Rubric marines you might be at a slight handicap as "to much of a good thing" is still true :p

But there are plenty of players that use 10/20 even 30 Rubricae (the plural of Rubric in-universe) who do well on a constant basis.  Rubric marines (at least IMHO) are one of the best infantry in the game, effectively a 2+ armor save against most guns you would point at a basic infantrymen.  The same guns that grind space marines to dust would have trouble against rubrics and be far less effective.

As well as dangerous shooting, a bolter with ap -2 is a very good gun, quality shooting. But often not enough quantity so you need to get that elsewhere.

I always find it shocking when people somehow make the claim that rubric marines are not good infantry. kinda blows my mind honestly. Scarabs and Exalteds are okay, but Rubrics and Tzaangors are both incredibly solid infantry choices that have different roles.

Added bonus; if you wanted to do a thousand sons themed army and run another armies rule-set you can do that with any of the non-dedicated legions since Rubric marines are elite slots in Iron warriors/ Word bearers/Night Lords/ Alpha Legion/ Black Legion.

I also don't think you're handicapping yourself at all, Alpha Legion Rubrics make very good troops, I run 18 of them (2x9) they constantly pay themselves off, and it's VERY difficult to just wipe them, especially with Weaver of Fates and an Exalted nearby.

I don't think we're in a terrible spot for a Index army at all. I just think we're FAR behind anything competitive (Codex Armies) AND we lack a good, fluffy roster with some variety. But both those problems should be solved or at least ameliorated within the next 3-4 months, so I'm not too concerned.

Who are the non-existent alpha legion?

My guys will be proper thousand sons. Even my goats will be 1KS

Mine are also. I mean using their trait as our missing legion trait, since we lack one until our Codex hits.

(And technically, if I'm not mistaken the goats are supposed to be Prosperine Spireguard remnants).

Anything resembling the Spireguard of old are long gone, according to Battle for the Fang. In that, the Sons used barely-disciplined human troops only a slight notch above a Cultist rabble. Tzaangors could well be Cultists who have since mutated, but Beastmen are also a relatively stable abhuman strain, so it's very much up to you.

Gentlemen, I need your opinions for a second.

At the end of WHFB 8th ed I bought some tomb Kings. When WFFB died my group stopped playing fantasy and the tomb kings (TK from now) were left to gather dust unpainted.

How would you feel about playing someone using the following Tk miniatures as 1KS, all painted in 1KS colours?

Bone giant on 50mm round base: Helbrute with 2x close combat weapons?

Necroshpinx on oval base: Maulerfiend?

Warsphinx with spear dudes in the howdah: Maulerfield with lasher tendrils (spears as the lashers)?

Ushabties with great weapon on 40mm bases: 1kS chaos spawns?

I also have 2 tomb scorpions I would love to use, but I am not sure what kind of model they would be?

I think I'd rather use Tomb Kings for Necrons to be honest. Marines are way more bulky than skeletons obviously.

If I still had my Tomb Kings army (same thing happened to your group happened to mine but with the switch from 7th to 8th and I sold them all) I'd definitely play them as Necrons.

Matter of fact I was thinking about a Necrons army painted all bone-y but decided to start T'au instead for a change of pace (wanted something high tech)....I still kinda regret even tho I like my T'au. :P

That being said TSons is not the most terrible idea and your use of constructs as TSons units certainly sounds solid. In the end it's your group that decides what's acceptable to them and not some random people on the internet so better ask them than us. ;)

I'd probably make sure that the models have a little conversion work, in addition to being 1k Sons colours, and I'd stay away from using skeletons themselves (perhaps have a floating Exalted Sorcerer in the howdah?). Counts-as is great when it's one or two units, but try not to make it look as though you're just whacking in a whole bunch of leftover TK models.

It's a really vague guideline, but counts-as should make the opponent think you've gone the extra mile for a really cool unit, not saved a few quid.

This. It may sound harsh but that's really what it is about imo. Making a cool and unique army, not saving money.
