The Imperial Guard of the Kharaa System

Since I've been posting here more often, I figured I'd have a thread to keep track of my Guard.

First off, a few things about the Kharaa system. Most of these details tie into something that I’ve got in the pipeline.

The only inhabited world within the system is Kharaa II (just call it Kharaa).  It is a harsh Jungle world with its fair share of dangerous creatures.  But the true danger to humans is that much of the flora is toxic to humans.  Because of this, most of its population live in large cities where the air is made to be safe enough to breathe.  Fights withing the jungle require respirator masks. The system is located in Segmentum Obscurus, not too far from the Fenris system. Although the other planets of the system are uninhabited, there is a Deathwatch Watch Fortress hidden on the moon on Kharaa IV

On to the models.  The majority of what I’m showing today was done by me.  I  have some ongoing work being done by Den of Imagination (DOI) which I will also post as it is completed, though you can see my avatar for a sample.  I’ll be VERY clear about what is my work and what is theirs.  While I still want to show the models off, I certainly don’t want to take any credit for them.

I’m going to start off with some general pictures.  I have more models than this, but I put in what was convenient to grab at the time.  About half of the basic troops here were done by DOI (It was their lowest level, I wanted to get some troops done as a test order).  A good amount of the stuff isn’t finished here but that’s what update pictures are for.  I've also noticed that I didn't put in in a lot of the hull weapons (I'm magnetizing).

Next are some closeups of some of my more complete models, though the vehicle still need some touch ups for me to call them finished.  It gives to a good idea of my paint schemes.

Finally, I want to show how I’m painting my veterans.  While the guardsmen go on the assembly line, I try to spend a lot more time on these guys.  I actually try to give them faces and highlights as well as giving them nice bases.  I think at least some of that extra time paid off.

I’ll try to be better about cleaning of the dust in future posts.  It really show up at these resolutions.

Got some of my sniper vets painted up tonight.  Basically, I started with the Cadian sniper and cut off most of the suit and tried to shape everything into the normal Cadian arms.   I think it worked out better than swapping the gun parts.

I'd say my biggest struggle is with the faces.  What you have seen are the "good" ones picked from this this nightmare

The head sprue allows me to streamline the setup for painting a bunch of heads so I can practice with little down time.  Though I think I'm going to strip the paint on those guys and re prime since some of the are getting to many layers on them.

Also I'm trying to convert a Battle Cannon into a conqueror Cannon.  I am very inexperienced with green stuff, but this is what I've come up with.

When it hardens a bit more, I'm going to try to file it into some straighter surfaces.

I cleaned up and painted up the turret.  The hull that goes with it isn't finished, but I think the conversion is the interesting part.  For my first sculpt, I'm satisfied with it.

I gotta say, these high res close ups really show how sloppy my work is.

I was more of a remark about my general painting. Though I'd think very few painters could really make something look great that close up at those resolutions.

As for the conqueror, now the trick is to make two more look the same.  I doubt I'll ever use more than 3 at a time.

So first off, I made this pledge in the other thread.  I'll still report completed projects there but I intend to post some progress updates every so often.

"In the name of the Emperor and Lord Commander , I Commander Chris of the Kharaa System, shall raise the following forces by 31st March."

3 Comapany Commanders

3 Infantry squads

2 Command Squads

2 Scout Sentinels

2 Leman Russ Conquerors

Basilisks

Valkyrie

The new rules hurts me a bit since a lot of the stuff I was planning where for Heavy Support.  I'm going to mitigate that a bit by putting some of the Heavy weapons teams inside of the infantry squads.

And now for the pictures

First 3 Commanders and 3 infantry squads

V2j4vBb.jpg

2 Command squads.  I need to dig through my bitz to find the flamers for them.  I want to put them in the Valkyrie

VhRVfOi.jpg

2 Sentinels, might added a 3rd before the end

9YUA8AV.jpg

2 Leman russ Conquerors- going to do the same conversion that is show in my army thread.  Those turrets are going to be repainted when the conversion is done.

zvlVHQJ.jpg

1 Basilisks- I'm planing on doing 2, but only one counts here now.

GJjK6Gw.jpg

1 Valyrie- In the box,  I may get a rounf to the Vulture, so I want want to pledge that too, the picture is already here.

Also, as some of you may notice from that photo, I can pledge the Millennium Falcon too if the Emperor would take it  :tongue.:

So I've been working on two things this weekend.

The first was to try to to do two more Leman Russ Conqueror conversions.  I took a couple of pitcures to show what I did.

The eye peice was from the chimera kit, and I think the storm bolter was as well.  Both were cut down significantly and glued into place.

I then molded the green stuff in to make a transition more plate like.  I included the middle one for comparisons.

6OiYgDa.jpg

Now I need to wait for it to harden so I can file them down into shape.

The other thing I worked on was the Valkyrie.  Unlike the Vendetta I posted earlier,  I'm going to have this one be open so I wanted a bit of paint on the interior.

AoBsGGR.jpg

l9oocB3.jpg

Nothing really special here.  Just a base coat, wash, dry brush. Basic paint on the gunners and some color on some buttons.  Since it's an interior I woun't be putting that much more into it.  Now I'll build the rest of the model around it.

Conqueror turrets look great. I have been looking to do something similar so will use your inspiration.

One little thing on the painted one. I’d recommend drilling out the storm bolter barrels. It’ll give it another level in detail and is simple to do.

I'll probably end up doing that.

I was painting some bases tonight from Den of Imagination and I figured I would take some pictures after each step.  I have small versions of these for my veterans, but this is my first time doing a really big one for a flyer.  One is for the Valkyrie mentioned earlier in the thread and the other will be for a Vulture.

I hadn't thought to take pictures before I started so this one is another one that I had just primed.

0w8Rdht.jpg

First I base coated the ground brown

and the stone work grey.

N3Sh8sW.jpg

The I gave the whole thing a brown wash

BO2twc4.jpg

iJMvOnx.jpg

Followed by giving the stone a black wash

Then the dry brushing started.  I gave the dirt a few brighter shades, but the stone is where it really comes across. Getting brighter as I go.

And finally some grass.

I think the grass was the weakest part.  Overall though, I think they came out well.

Just looked at all your pics, very nice.

There are few sights more spectacular (in 40k) than a fully painted Guard army and yours doesn’t disappoint!

I’m loving the flying bases too. As the others said the grass compliments the rest of the bases.

I have a general update for my progress in the hobby challenge

First off the full picture.

D5sbzrI.jpg

I still nee to assemble a number of infantry as well as the sentinelss

I've completed the commanders

cDvXtVj.jpg

The Valkyrie and basilisks are base coated

WSqMcpK.jpg

I finished the bases for the sentinels

XxUS4iC.jpg

There is still a lot of cleanup to do on them, but I got the basic colors on the plasma gunners and airbrushed in the plasma effects.

kU2V7uZ.jpg

Finally, I started detailing one of the Russes.

DlrJDnn.jpg

9yTDLho.jpg

First I painted the metallic parts, then applied a wash to all of the corners, then I highlighted above them.  I still have some cleanup to do, but you can definitely see the effects coming through.  The funny part that I didn't notice until taking these pictures was that since I was detailing the turrets separately from the hulls, I highlighted the wrong turret.  I as you can see the highlighted turret matches the hull I haven't detailed yet.
