As the new year dawns and I have had another year of almost no playing the game and abysmal ability to actually assemble an army I have decided to launch my super awesome amazing project from my halls in the Deepest Darkest Depths of the Liber, and thus my Tale of Eight Armies has been born.  I live in rural Tasmania (the island state off the bottom of Australia for those not in the know), in a place with minimum 40k community.  I know a large number of people interested in the game but few have the money or commitment to actually complete an army.  I, however, have been collecting 40k on and off for the past ten years or so and have a large number of models from when I didn't have RL commitments (read as before kids, wife and mortgage).

I want to get back into playing the game and, as such, have decided to assemble what models I have as well as collect some more to create eight separate armies (not all particularly good or balanced) so that once I get these other guys playing maybe they will actually complete their own armies.

In true Liber style each of these armies are DIY factions and will each be accompanied by fluff and hopefully, as time goes by, battle reports etc.

And so, without further adieu, allow me to present the eight armies that make up this project:

So it seems only appropriate that I would start with a HQ of each of the armies.  Where possible I will do lieutenant/2IC HQs.  I already have some of these painted so here is how I intend on completing Stage 1:

Iron Heralds: Chaplain in Terminator Armour

New Eden Rifles: Company Commander

Angels of Decay: Noxious Blightbringer (I know, not a HQ but approriate)

Hive Fleet Titan: Hive Tyrant

WAAAAGH Grot Rippa: Warboss

White Talons: Probably Sorcerer

Craftworld Ye-Toth: Warlock

Imperial Forces: Probably an Inquisitor or two...

So stay tuned for the start of Stage 1 of the Tale

And excuse the double post but its about time I graced this thread with a model picture or two.  For those whom lurk in the Tyranid sub forum you would have already seen this guy but for those whom don't here is my first completed model for this tale:

" There was one beast that stood above all the rest.  Great scything claws ripped through Danis and his squad of storm troopers while it sliced through an astartes dreadnought like it was little more paper with its great bone sword.  I dont care what you do to me, Inquisitor, but nothing will compare to the horror I faced that day!" Guardsmen Thoman Fierf, 42nd Incipios Grenadiers - Executed for Heresy and Cowardice M41

gallery_36568_13958_24239.jpg

Pretty horrible photo and not really the great start to the project I'd hoped but a start none the less.

Okay so after a little while without updates (I have been doing stuff, just forgetting to update here) I have a bit of a picture dump ahead.  So here goes:

gallery_36568_14038_29847.png

gallery_36568_14038_10150.jpg " Brenner! Get that gun up!  Winters!  Trench detail at the double!  Sergeant Bleaker, I want that ruin strong enough to withstand a direct artillery hit by nightfall or I swear to Him on Terra the Commiserate will hear of it!" Captain Danse spat orders at his men as they hurried to their duties.  He turned to see his Communications Officer standing beside him,

"Report, Soldier!" he demanded and the voxmen saluted smartly,

" Request for reinforcements from the front line, Sir!" he said and Danse smiled grimly,

" About damned time..." he said and turned back to his men.

Captain Ahrnem Danse is a fine example of a Officer of the New Eden Rifles.  Stern and unflappable he commands the 124th Division of the 13th New Eden Rifles, and is widely regarded as one of the most senior officers of the Regiment.  Young by the standards of many of the regiments officers he had an incredibly meteoric rise from the ranks following the death of the former Captain of the 124th during the opening days of the campaign on Incipios.  A fair but uncomprimising officer he had earned the trust of Colonel Katrin, leader of the 13th, whom saw his take command of the 124th Division.

Like many of the regiments officers Danse is born of the planets original aristrocratic stock, a fact he is all to aware of.  Like his colonel, however, he is a strong believer in merit over birthright makes a man or woman a good officer and is quick to put those whom prove themselves under fire in position of authority.  That hasn't completely erased the old prejudices, however, and he has been know to be slower to trust those whose blood lines come from the workers or, worse, criminals, of New Eden.

Danse was not part of The Calling, the name given to the random draft that fills the numbers of the New Eden regiments but rather volunteered to serve in the planets PDF before being called into the 13th.  Indeed it was his heroic actions during the PDF's actions during the defence of New Eden against the dark eldar raiders that would see him gifted with a relic bolt pistol from the Iron Heralds Astartes that dates back to the Chapter's founding.  Tech-priests assigned to the warzone wont touch the weapon, stating dark whispers surround its machine spirit.  Danse dismisses such accusations as heresy as a weapon of the Astartes must surely be as pure as the warriors whom wielded it.

So there we have the start of Captain Danse, for the New Eden Rifles.  This is, of course, for the recent "Trooping the Colours" Astra Militarum Challenge (why not kill two xenos with one bolter I always say).

I have also been working on the Malignant Plague Caster for the Angels of Decay.  He is almost finished bar basing and a few paints I am missing so I wont post a pic of him yet till he is finished.

Next off the rank is:

gallery_36568_14038_35108.png

" Run ya' bleedin' gitz!  Hide if ya' think ya' can!  Me and me boyz 'il find ya' and rip ya' apart!  WAAAAAGH!!!!!"  Warboss Grazok Grotrippa - Ork invasion of Incipios

gallery_36568_14038_16535.jpg

The beast known as Warboss Grazok Grotrippa is perhaps one of the greatest foes known to the sub-sector and indeed, if allowed to breach from the system, the Imperium as a whole.  Whilst not the toughest ork boss in the Bleak Grazok is brutally cunning and has, as much through ruthless manipulation as sheer brute strength, united many of the disparate tribes of the Bleak behind his banner.  In numbers not seen since the Black WAAAGH that nearly spelt the doom of the Iron Heralds Astartes WAAAGH  Grotrippa has spilt from the uncharted Bleak and smashed into Imperium space like the hammer of some long forgotten gods wrath.

Half his skull and, some say brain, replaced with bionics by his pet big mek Fogrot following an earlier encounter with the Iron Heralds Astartes Grazok is possessed of an impressive cunning for one of his species.  There are whispers that, whatever Fogrot did it has some how infused the beast with a cunning from some warp based entity.

Grazok is the driving force behind the WAAAGH and his death would likely bring about the destruction of the invasion as, although no doubt one of his senior Nobz would take control, none would be possessed of the same low cunning that Grazok posseses.  A fact not lost on the Imperium whom has so far lost two kill teams of the Ordo Xenos attempting to end the ork Warbosses life.  Along with, if rumours can be believed, at least one vindicare assasin.

I painted Grazok some time ago (it shows in the quality of his painting).  He is a blending of the remaining parts of an earlier ork warboss conversion I did when I last collected the hobby.  I might touch up and repaint a few things eventually but for now he is done.

So here is some more LIKE fodder.  Hopeless picture as I took it with my phone but, meh.  Here is the completed Captain Arnhem Danse:

gallery_36568_14038_20309.jpg

Not the hugest fan of how he turned out, especially the face.  The base is supposed to represent Trench works, and will elaborate more with later models as this was mostly a test.

gallery_36568_14038_160889.png

gallery_36568_14038_227.jpg

I also did this, fluff incoming.  Atrocious photo I know.  Thats an area I have improved on but still am struggling to get decent pics.  The base is supposed to represent part of their ruined and crashed Craftworld but it has ended up simply looking like unpainted cork...  Any advice or thoughts here would be greatly appreciated.

But now I have come to another hurdle (other then my abysally slow completion rate at the moment).   I again lack the paints and money to the paints I need at the moment, coupled with the rather... unexpected exploding of my can of Chaos Black spray undercoat has rather limited me to what I can paint.  As the remaining HQ models require a black undercoat or are models/conversions I do not have the paints for at the moment I am forced to move onto what was going to be my second part of this little journey, the first squad of Troops.  I will be starting with a squad of guardsmen as I undercoat them in grey so the lack of black is no great hurdle.  I am also tying it in to the Trooping the Colours challenge still so the more of the New Eden Rifles I get done the higher rank I can achieve.

So, any thoughts or comments are greatly appreciated and hopefully I will increase the completion rates sometime soon so that I actually complete this project some time this century.

Well past time I got back working on this...

gallery_36568_14038_70962.png

gallery_36568_14038_24011.jpg

The Angels of Ultramar were never a Chapter to put much stock in the sorceries of the Warp, and as such their Librarium was small in number.  The Chapter, founded soon after the Heresy, was still dedicated, at least in part, to the Edict of Nicea.  So when they were betrayed on Laurettum by the Inquisitor none whom fought on the surface were psychically gifted and as such their were no sorcerers in the early Angels of Decay.  It wasn't long before several on those whom longed for greater power sought out even greater blessings from their pestilent patron.  Beleborous was one of those desiring greater powers.  Before the fall he was Sargeant Belicius of one of the Angels Tactical Squads.  Now he stands as a bloated and festering testament to the terrible and mighty powers of Grand Father Nurgle.  His breath has brought plague and pestilence to thousands of worlds, in his wake a billion plague ridden husks and worlds embroiled in bubonic pustulence.

gallery_36568_14038_128405.png

gallery_36568_14038_29698.jpg

Former commander of the White Talon's First Company, now defacto leader of the warband following their Excommunication, Berathius has led the White Talons into exile gleefully.  A consumate swordsmen and warrior in general Berathius has taken up the title of the Cowled Prince, reflecting on his role as a warrior king over the iec world of Gelanis.  Like most of the White Talons Berathius has turned his obsession on being the greatest warrior to an extreme, led on by the sibulant whispers of Slaanesh and has slowly fallen into depravity and obsession, as befitting a servant of the Prince of Pleasure.  Berathius wields a relic known as the Sword of Souls, a blade that desires to be pitted against the strongest souls on a battlefield.  An appropriate blade for the Chaos Lord, as he seeks these warriors himself to prove his own martial superiority.  When he strikes one of these warriors down their soul is trapped forever in the blade, its surface glowing a malific green and forever covered in the screaming and twisted face of those of those souls consumed by its energies.

You guessed it... Fluff incoming...

Please ignore the melting off arm of the guy in the background...

So, hope to go back and fluff these guys with maybe some better pics in the next few days.  The Guardsmen squad marks the start of the next phase of this personal challenge, Troops.  I hope to dramatically increase production rates with starting on the first three of 60 ork boys...

Quite the project you've embarked on brother, the gold of the shield captain is a good tone; not too in your face shiny. Really liking the green and grey of the New Eden Rifle troopers.
