Show us your Custodes - all colours welcome!

Recommended Posts

Loving all the pictures of your guys' work so far, impressive and inspiring!

Here's my contribution for what it's worth, hopefully this counts as red, though you'll have to live with some white there as well.  My scheme was inspired both from the white Custodes model that Lord Valrak was kind enough of share photos of from the warhammer open day, and from a picture I'd seen previously of a Custodes Contemptor-Galatus Dreadnought painted with a beautiful white marble shield.  I wanted to bring some colour to the model, but retain the primary colour of gold on the models.  I settled for what you'll see below; white marble will be the colour for their weapon bodies, and I tested colouring one shoulder pad marble as well - I'm not sure yet whether I'll put this on all the models or reserve it as a type of marking for Shield-Captains.  I had tested a royal blue instead of red as I think that contrasts wonderfully with the white, but ultimately red meshed much better with the tone of gold I have, and the gems and power weapons provide a better source of blue.

I'm not entirely satisfied with the marble effect, though I was content with it for now as it was my first time attempting to paint marble.  Let me know if there's any suggestions on how I could improve it, or any questions!  Basing is, of course, still to happen.

Here’s my completed Ixion Hale/Captain and a tester Custodes chap in the Warders of the Vaults of Rython scheme. Not too sure if I want a brighter gold or not, but gonna do the other 4 members of his squad and see how I feel.

Also feel like I need to change the basing as well. I usually play on Grey/green boards, but find the grey bases blend too much in with the black armour.

N.B. Apologies for the wall of pictures, copied from my plog on here.

Very gladly, here is my own take on the Warders of the Vaults of Rython during the Unification Wars :)59vCP51.jpg?1GWKggDQ.jpg?1

There are more pics of him in my Unification  Wars thread, but as you can see, I replaced the legs with Stormcast Eternal legs. I'll do a tutorial both on the build and the painting eventually.

Don’t mean to hijack the thread at all, but this is awesome and I like the Stormcast legs with it a lot. Do you think a mix of Stormcast and Custodes legs would work in one army? To give a bit more pose variety.

Not to derail the thread, but just to quickly answer your question: I think the mix could work, if (and this is the big if) you like both aesthetics. I personally hate the regular custodes legs. The belt buckle is too massiv, the ankles are too wide, the feet are too flat and broad and the tabards are too short. Also, the regular kit sadly only has 3 poses, while the stormcast kits have a massive variety of legs, buckles, tabards etc. I myself prefer uniformity, so I use only stormcast legs amongst my regular custodes, but if you like both aesthetics, then I say go for it! :)

Didn't even notice those were Stormcast legs. The bitz go together well. One could probably even get away with some Stormcast torsos sprinkled in as well.

Aren't the Stormcast legs the same as the Primaris, now you mention it?

All of a sudden it all makes sense!

  • 2 weeks later...

Standard colours, although I'm thinking of repainting the cloak and cloth parts a red or green/navy tartan design(and then throughout the rest of the army). Something I've not tried before, so should be a good learning curve or a frustrating one.

Thanks everyone!

All the art work of "black custodes" seemed to have a metallic grey gunmetal feel plus i wanted to do metallic instead of matte to keep in line with the rest of the custodes. The color i used is actually Vallejo MEtal color gun metal. it is a very dark gunmetal. Darker than this when not directy under hobby lights. Its exactly what i was looking for for shadowkeepers.

I suspected as much -- been using their gold for my base colour on non-special Custodes.

thank you, I'm planning on doing a variation of the same theme, and that's exactly the look for the black I wanted. Glad to know what paint I need to buy now

I've my army painted for some time now. Stoked to be getting a codex! Although, now I'll need to buy more models. Here are some pictures of my Shield Company, from a recent game.

Killersquid - these are ace! I love the slightly more burnished/silvery gold that you've got! May I ask how you painted the gold?

I'm glad there are other options in the Codex besides the default gold - and Betrayer's Shadow Keepers are the best example I've seen as to why!

But I'm probably going to do mine in traditional gold.  Picking them up this weekend, hopefully I'll have some pictures in a couple weeks.
