[DW] Blackthorn and Swordhand: OOC Thread

Commissar Molotov

Recommended Posts

In keeping with the traditions of his parent chapter, a Storm Son who is the last of his bond (essentially, his squad), undertakes Chayaran (lit: 'One who walks the Path of the Shadow'), a 40 terran year pilgrimage and may not return to the chapter and be accepted as a Khan (veteran). Typically, this means a Storm Son usually finds himself aiding Imperial or Mechanicus forces, but in some cases, a Storm Son may find himself outside the doors of a Watch Fortress.

There's mine in simple terms. I have no desire to be 'the best' or 'rise in the ranks' or wield OP weaponry. I'm here for the narrative and see where it takes me.

Solastion Albikus. Sanguinary Priest of the Crimson Knights.

Like most of those stemming from the lineage of Sanguinius, Solastion is an intrinsically conflicted soul having to constantly balance his inner darkness with his otherwise angelic demeanour. A native of the Chapters homewolrd of Syross - a medieval world by all accounts - he was born into a knights family in good standing with their fiefs Lord.

A victor of his kindgom’s Grand Heavenly Trials - a three year long tournament within which every able bodied male of age participated in, by decree of the Chapter, so that the best of the population could then partake in the Trials of the Aspirant - Solastion came to the chapter bright-eyed and eager for his father had groomed him from birth to one day be a participant.

Whilst being unremarkable physically, bearing the common black hair and sea-spray grey eyes of the average Syrossian and being of average built and height for a youth destined to partake in the Heavenly Trials, what made Solastion stand out from the other aspirants was his mental acuity and the care he placed on his group-mates wellbeing; the Chaplains soon had him pinned as a potential addition to the apothecarion, he need only survive the rest of his trials.

As a Sanguinary Priest for his Chapter, Solastion, much like those who share his station, takes his duties seriously for upon his shoulders, and those of his peers, does the future and current wellbeing of the Crimson Knights rest. However, an underlying darkness eats away at him much in the same way it does his fellow battle-brothers for none were spared the geneseed mutation that afflicts them all with the desire to consume their fallen. And so does he tirelessly toil between deployments and training with his fellow Priests to devise a cure yet no avenue has borne fruit.

Otherwise of angelic bearing, as befits a successor of the XIth Legion, the squadmates he's been paired with over his years of Vigil soon aquaint themselves with what he calls: his Shame. Named such for when the Thirst overtakes him in combat, his demeanour quickly changes from his normally cool-if-aloof to that remeniscent of a frothing berserker wanting only to slay the enemy before him; these episodes becoming all the more intense as he sees combat action after another. To his relief however, the meditations taught to all of him and his by the Chaplains has always brought him back from the brink once given a reprieve from combat thus far.

Adept in the usage of all Space Marine weaponry, the nature of his station and Chapter means that he, is seen on the battlefield with his bolt pistol and chainsword in hand more often than not so that he may better support his brethren as they perform their Emperor-given duties to the Imperium.

He serves now in the Deathwatch at his own behest, the perimission granted begrudgingly by his Chapter Master, so that he may better develop his understanding of the Space Marine by encountering the largest variety in the hopes that he discovers something that would aid in curing his Chapter.

This is more or less what my late night / early morning scatter brain conjured up for Solastion.

Lamech, of the Consecrators -
One hundred and sixty eight years. His service as an astartes. Before that his world did not measure time in Imperial standard units nor did his achievements or attachments matter to him in his life past. All he still carried of it was a sword with which he had once dared challenge the might of the astartes as a reminder of his failure.

He had been arrogant, a supreme warrior, able to avenge himself absolutely for any slight real or imagined. When the sky warriors came as the stories had foretold he held no doubts, but he was as a child before them in body and mind. What was a warrior before a god.

His placement amongst the Deathwatch had been unexpected, his superior declining to state if it was reward or punishment for the insult he had offered the champion of the wolves on Iocanthos by striking him as he recited the names of his ancestors as if they were of any consequence. It was in some way ironic that here Lamech was tasked with honouring his own ancestors of sorts, the previous wearers of the armour he had been tasked with. Seconded to the Deathwatch forty seven centuries ago it was a relic of the heresy, the entire left side scored and charred by the prototype atomantic shield that had been crafted into its pauldron, and the Consecrators eternally tasked to protect it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
(alternate - assault marine - Atratus, of the Raptors)
Atratus' duty to the Deathwatch lay heavily on his shoulders. Designated watcher for his unit his rifle had not felled enough of the ambush that his brothers might hold their ground, nor his eyes revealed the trap into which they had been driven. The bloody toll he had reaped on the Eldar in retribution was no comfort, the chapter master choosing to replace his unit with one fresh and complete from the ranks of the neophytes while Atratus was tasked here to earn the right to return to join the ranks of the first company or to fall and join the ranks of his brothers.

(jump pack and sniper rifle :p)

That's a rough background and character outline for Tyber, about the best I can slam together in half an hour.

I would also like to add, that I am not expecting promotions, based on the advancement trees, rather I was intending to give our GM a personal goal line for my character.

+++Data on Watch Sergeant Castro Accessed+++

Name: Julio Castro

Chapter: Crimson Fists

Specialisation: Assault Marine

Years of service: 17

Honours Held: Iron Skull

Service History: Unusually, Brother-Sergeant Castro is a native of Rynn's World, with a more civilised and educated upbringing than many of his fellow Crimson Fists. This, however, has done little to temper his hatred for the alien. He is well studied on how best to slay the beasts that plague humanity, and this knowledge is what earned him a very early promotion to Sergeant.

When the Sergeant of his Tactical Squad was slain by an Ork Nob, he discarded his heavy bolter in favour of his combat knife, slicing various arteries of the monster as he ordered his comrades to retreat to a safe distance. Distracted, as expected, by this duel, the beast was then gunned down by half a dozen boltguns. This knowledge of Xeno psychology saw Brother Castro serving as Sergeant in an Assault Squad, until sent to the Deathwatch with full honours.

Mazer - this narrative is set after the Badab War - by about five years - so an Astral Claw, if they were around, would be in a particularly precarious position. Which is not to say that I'm against it in theory. News takes time to travel across the galaxy, after all. If you can PM me an address I can send you a link to a character post on the Google Drive.

Molotov, yes - that was my enthusiasm acting faster than my brain! :biggrin.: I was going to try and explore the dynamic that an Astral Claw would create - perhaps one cut from the heart of his brethren - a political outcast if you will, especially with brothers from Loyalist Chapters during the Secession querying his motives, his deeds, his every word.  Maybe called coward by some, traitor by others, a tight leash without question, forced to prove himself time and again, through bone-aching solitude.  Shunned, yet accepted as a spare pair of hands due to the latitude of the Deathwatch.

This is of course in no way solid - can easily do Imperial Fist if you prefer less headache.

Will PM you as requested, cheers!

Speaking personally, I'd be interested to see how this would pan out, to have a pariah through circumstance as part of the group.

I very much second this, doubly so when knowledge of that war comes to our Kill Team, preferably after we've started to bond as a unit. Just to throw a wrench into everything and force us to really examine ourselves, how much is Chapter vs. how much is friendship.

Okay all, I've made this to help me in terms of judging where people are as we go through the character process and so I can try to select the characters that'll make it through to this first game.

qzLOIZD.png

Along the top you'll see the 12(!) players who've shown interest in the game.

If you're reading this, the first step is to ensure you've sent me a PM containing an email address. In order to access Google Drive and edit the character sheets, I believe you need a gmail address, though I'm not sure on that. Once I have received that email, I can send you a link to your character sheet.

In terms of the character sheet, I'm only asking players to initially edit the top section - that is, the rows for Character, Chapter, Specialism and Chapter Demeanour

Dosjetka, Nineswords, Slips and Steel Company:

Firstly, please roll 2D10 nine times and add this to 30. These are your nine statistics, in order. You may re-roll one of your choice but must accept the second roll even if it's lower. Then please add your chapter characteristic bonuses, shown above in my picture for the Templars, White Scars, Blood Angels and Dark Angels.

Please post these statistics in this thread and then edit them into your character sheet.

SC: I am aware you've pre-filled your character sheet but I am asking you to re-roll your characteristics. (If you wish to clear your character sheet to make this process easier, that's up to you.)

Stats:

WS: 8+8+30 = 46

BS: 9+10+30= 49

STR: 10+10+30= 50 (dang my dice are rolling super hot O_o)

TGH: 1+4+30= 34

AGI: 1+2+30= 33 (I spoke way too soon)

INT: 3+7+30= 40

PER: 1+9+30= 40
WP: 8+10+30= 48
FEL: 2+10+30= 42

Re-rolling Toughness: 5+9+30= 44

I can re-roll all of these using a dice roller if required/desired.

Since I RNG'd a Chapter with Rites of Battle, I'm not using the Blood Angels Characteristic increases but the ones I rolled for which was +5 Toughness and +5 Willpower; a result of 60 on page 22 in Rites of Battle.

Unless you want me to use the Blood Angels stats which I'm also fine with.

Total Stats are: WS:46 BS:49 STR:50 TGH:49 AGI:33 INT:40 PER:40 WP:53 FEL:42

Apologies both, overlooked your differing stats and Chapter Demeanours. Doubtless the first in a long line of mistakes! I've edited it on my spreadsheet.

Slips - should your toughness be 40 rather than 49? (You rolled 1+4, so 35 rather than the 34 you've written, plus 5?)

Okay, no problem. That's what I get for doing this late at night!

In answer to your other question, I'm not requiring evidence of rolls at the moment.

A.T.: I would say that your Consecrator and Steel Company's Dark Angels successor are both very close to one another - something I can't say about a Raptor Assault Marine!

Mazer: I've had a look at the Astral Claws rules but I'm not sure about the Rival (Inquisition) Talent. I wonder whether something else would be appropriate? I think the thing to consider would be when and how your Marine left the Astral Claws. Did he have disagreements with Huron? Was he involved with the Tyrant's Legion at all? I was wondering whether he might've had knowledge of the Imperial Guard but it might not work if he is a Marine who's somewhat disenfranchised with his Chapter.

With regards to my character - the assault marine is just an alternate if you want to balance the group - would you prefer I use it?

I've reset Lamech's sheet back to it's default state using the stats in order from the original orokos.com rolls - i'll switch it over to raptors now so you can see the difference.

And done - the Lamech sheet has been converted to brother Atratus, save for the sheet name (as I was worried it might mess up any links or similar you had if I changed it).

Just basic stats and default gear. No xp spent, no rolls made for armour or similar.

Yes, I think maybe Rival (Fire Hawks) might be more suitable - I'm trying to time Akkad's leaving with just before the Declaration of Secession, so that literally, he's on the road to Erioch before the whole thing blows up and then it follows him.  Vagaries in the warp will help with that.

He will have Common Lore (Imperial Guard) and also Common Lore (Tyrant's Legion) as well I would imagine.

I would suggest Chapter bonuses as +5 Willpower and +5 Fellowship as he would both be fierce in command and used to leading Tyrant's Legion.

I have a background being built for him.  Basically he's one of the old guard.  I started doing Astral Claws after seeing this amazing thread http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/332073-to-the-bitter-end-the-badab-war-chaplain-wip-229/

and decided that the Astral Claws after Huron takes over become a touch more politicised, so you have the older marines, those that saw and still see Rovik Blake as the real Chapter Master and decide to keep the old Lion head heraldry.  Then there's the expansion of the Astral Claws, withholding gene-seed tithes, when everyone starts drinking the cool-aid and painting their shoulders blue.  Akkad is not one of them.  It goes a tad deeper as well, with old noble house rivalry cooking under the surface, so the two camps are fairly opposed - but come together for Badab, for the "Steel-shoulders" are loyal -  not to Huron, but to the Chapter and Badab.

The Astral Claws have 5000 years of destroying the enemies of the Emperor.  Akkad isn't going to spit on that - nor is he going to give up his love for Badab.  No matter how far away he is.

This is where Akkad's fate comes in.  He's a Sergeant, has been working with the Tyrant's Legion of course, but he and his fellow detractors are good Marines in a bad political situation - they get bad assignments, they are the last on the list for gear and repairs.  They can't be deprived of food or ammunition, because Huron wants them fighting, but he wants them dead or gone to break the old link.

Finally, he decides to sent the Sergeant away, partly to try and wrong-foot his Loyalist opponents, partly because to just kill Akkad will cause others to see it as martyrdom, for the sedition to be given credence.  So he makes an example, fulfils his obligations and gets rid of a dissenting voice, all cleanly because he's not murdering anyone directly.

Akkad approached the Throne of Judgement in the Palace of Thorns. His only clothing was his robe, proudly displaying his heraldry and the rank embroidery of a Sergeant of a Devastator squad.  He stopped some forty paces before his Chapter Master and knelt.

Huron was entombed in the massive silver casket of his Terminator Armour, his face stone, cold and his eyes dark and unreadable.  The Ghost Razors flexed ominously, casting blue light from their powered edges around the chamber.  He did not speak.  Corien Sumatris, Centurion and right hand of the Tyrant took a breath.

"Brother Daon Akkad, you are hereby stripped of your rank and privileges.  You will be given over to the keeping of the Deathwatch - to honour a pact made centuries ago. You will take your armour and weapons and die alone and forgotten.  You will die by the will of the Tyrant - and for Badab."

Sentence was passed, with only a delay in execution.

Mazer -

My thoughts are this:

As an Astral Claw, +5 S and +5 WP are appropriate, I think. I would then add Common Lore (Astra Militarum) to show his understanding of the organisation and procedures of Imperial Guard-like forces. In terms of Chapter Demeanour, would you say "Aloof"? or "Maelstrom Warders"? "Tyrants of Badab", to represent the spreading reputation of Huron's leadership?

Feel free to roll your nine stats for me and then add them to the character sheet that I've emailed you the link to. I assume you're looking to go for Devastator?

That sounds fine to me "Maelstrom Warders" I think would be good - out of curiosity which book contains the Astral Claw Rules?

Will roll up ASAP :smile.:

Devastator for sure.  The Big Guns Never Tire.
