Car Boot Sale Chaos Army Project

Car Boot

Recommended Posts

Hello All

So first time posting but I've been reading this forum and reddit in the last week a lot.

Basically I need some help please.

I used to collect GW back in the old days some twenty years ago but have somehow gotten that bug again when randomly at a car boot sale last Sunday (I never go to these i just thought it would be a laugh). Turns out I randomly purchased for £5 someones old bits box and a combined 2nd and 3rd addition of blood bowl. But blood bowl can wait.

So I emptied the box out

Now I was thinking can i build an army here without spending anymore money. Not because I'm grumpy but this could be fun right?

Limited resources and creative ideas ahoy. So I'm asking for some much needed advice and help with this and I'll post pictures and updates of the process obviously. As far as I've gathered this is now 40k version 8? and it seems a codex is now £40 ? ? ! ! how did this happen?

I'll go through this more tonight but so far there's a lot of Space Crusade Marines, some of the original plastic Rouge Trader Marines, 4 and a bit Terminators, 2 very broken SC Dreadnoughts, 23 humans were they diggers from Gorkamorka?, 2 Zombie sprues and a couple Berserkers. There's also an almost complete chaos spawn, some damaged skeletons and what appears to be a bit of everything old and forgotten.

I'm guessing you still need 2 Troops and a HQ so I've counted at least 20 Marines in various states. And since it's a mix of Imperial and Chaos I'll bash them together.

There's also about 20 citadel paints, plastic glue, super glue and one unused box of milliputt. So it's a bit like one of those old starter sets but ridiculously more affordable but in piss poor condition. I then emptied what I thought was just bubble wrap and found a load of sand, rubble bits and 28mm bases.

All Ideas welcome.

Thanks

You could make a serviceable death guard army. Green stuff some boils and what not on the marines, and combine the diggers and zombies to make poxwalkers.

Chaos spawn are actually pretty good.

Dreadnoughts (Helbrutes) are good with the Death Guard trait of being able to move and fire heavy weapons without penalty.

The terminators could be your HQs - Lords and Sorcerers in terminator armour.

And a codex is £25 direct from GW or £18.75 from Element Games/Dark Sphere etc.

You could also use Battlescribe to design and print out your army list (doesn't have the specific Warlord Traits or specific Codex Startagems though). Very easy to use, it's free and generally very up to date on wargear and costs etc.

I would also recommend Death Guard (I am biased, been a long time Death Guard player); kit bashed old Marine Armour, infected zombie like poxwalkers and very old school Dreadnoughts!! Blight Launchers are awesome weapons!

A Death Guard Army themed around rust, corrosion and decay perhaps (instead of disease, bloated bodies and chaos mutations)?

It would be interesting to see how this project progresses (I am doing something similar with Chaos Space Marines, Space Wolves and some Dark Angels for a Renegade Chapter).

Thanks for the heads up!

Hellbrutes are now the chaos dreadnoughts. And i can probably make one of these from the parts. It's frustrating so many things are not just broken but just hacked into at random places and chopped up.

Searching Battlescribe to have a look then.

Do you both agree I with two 10 man CSM squads?

I was instantly thinking nurgle soon as i spotted that milliputt but I really like the idea of smashed up rusting Iron/metal.

Plus it seems a lot of those paints are beyond recovery but the washes and metallics have some live in. I've undercoated two marines so I'll see what paints are good and go at it.

I'm not looking to win any prizes just something themed and gritty.

I've made use of recycling the hefty amount of takeout trays to separate what I've found so far. I think some of these paint pots are older than me?!

With the new rules, taking a 10 man squad (unless they are really combat orientated) is no longer really good. I would suggest about 7 or 8.If too many of your models are slain then you are likely to lose even more due to failing a morale test (Cultist Marines are no longer immune to morale). 6 - 7 Plague Marines can be a really hard unit to crack, especially if they are in some type of cover (2 or better armour save with Toughness 5 and Disgustingly Resilient on 5 or better as well).  If they are likely to be charged, have a Foul Blightspawn nearby to 1. lessen the hurt of the charge if there are multiple charges and 2. be a huge threat next turn, make the Plague Marines fallback and allow him to unleash his Plaguesprayer onto the chargers. (this has allowed me to kill 5 Loyalist Grey Knight terminators with one huge spray from this character!).

If you do want a close combat orientated Plague Marine squad, then 10 men would be good but definitely put them in a Rhino! (Sorry, I don't use Close Combat Palkgue Marines. Blightlaunchers/Plasma guns and a slow and steady movement phase to the enemy works for me, especially if your army is Battleforged, allows your Plague Marines to fire Assault weapons without penalty, or Rapid Fire twice at 18").

Helbrutes (Dreadnoughts) also benefit from this (I haven't used any yet, my Foetid Bloatdrones are far more useful to me at the moment).

Hope this helps a little.

I've had a go on battlescribe and got a rough estimate of what I could make out of whats available so far.

LEGION: Renegade Chapters - Dark Raiders

HQ

1x Sorcerer in Terminator Armour

chain fist, force sword, Gift of Chaos & Warptime

1x Exalted Champion

fleshmetal, chainsword, powerfist

TROOPS

20x Chaos Cultists

autopistol & brutal assault weapons

10x CSM

Aspiring Champion: chainsword, plasma pistol

8 Marines: boltgun

1 Marine Meltagun

10x CSM

Aspiring Champion: power maul, plasma pistol

8 Marines: boltgun

1 Marine Meltagun

ELITES

1x Hellbrute: Hellbrute fist, Heavy Flamer, Missile Launcher

1x Hellbrute: Plasma Cannon, Missile Launcher, Mark of Nurgle

FAST ATTACK
3x Chaos Spawn

Thats really what I thought I could model out of whats available. I thought I could create some spawn out of the various bits and pieces with the one original OOP model. The second Hellbrute would have to be swamped in greenstuff and skeleton/zombie bits
