Hi there, I'm putting together a fun coils of the hydra list that I don't expect to be tournament level ready, but still somewhat aggressive. Can you guys let me know what you think?

Elites:

Destroyer Squad [425 pts] 10 men, -jump packs, -melta bombs, - venom spheres, x2 missile launchers w/ rad missiles

You're definitely correct when you say that it isn't a tournament list. What kind of advice are you looking for? Do you want help to make it a bit more competitive or are you just after opinions on the list as it is?

A couple of points/questions:

Why doesn't the Praetor have any wargear? He is going to be really easy to kill (giving your opponent 'Slay the Warlord') with only a 3+ armour save and no invulnerable, plus he won't be able to do much without at least a power weapon. I'd definitely try to save some points somewhere else to give him some equipment. Also, which unit is he going to go with?

The Moritat is an awesome unit (aesthetically and fluff-wise), but not very competitive/cost effective. Also, make sure that your oppanant is happy for you to use the Void Shield Harness. Most people don't play with the relics.

Which unit is the Librarian going with and what is his role? Buffing a unit?

Three tactical Squads is pretty cheap, just don't expect them to do much except sit on objectives.

The Destroyers are cool, just like the Moritat, but they're also probably the most over-costed unit in the Legion roster.

The Gal Vorbak are solid, but they're much better if they have a transport and the Dark Martyr would really benefit from a powerfist. Without a transport they're going to be pretty vulnerable to enemy fire.

The Leviathan is a solid choice. Personally I like to have at least one close combat weapon (usually the drill), and a Dreadnought Drop Pod makes the Leviathan much better.

The Venator is a great choice because the army is pretty light on ranged fire power. You've given it a lot of expensive upgrades though.

I can only second most of what Kizzdougs pointed out above.

I'd drop the Librarian and the Void Shield Harness, along with maybe one or two of the upgrades on the Venator.

Then re-invest the saved points in equipment for the Praetor, a P-Fist for the Martyr and maybe some smallish upgrades for the Tacs (Artificer comes to mind).

By giving your Praetor a jump pack he could join the Destroyers, but then it'd be all eggs in one basket - something I wouldn't do myself.

So maybe switch out one of your Tacs for an Assault unit and have a jumpy Praetor join them.

Would give you two mobile jump units to press forwards. And would go well with a pod on the Leviathan.

My thinking was to use the Praetor to gain rites of war.

The Librarians role: I intended to take Biomancy and use him to Buff the Moritat and the Destroyers.
The Gal Vorbak: I left them without transport to deep strike them
I made some tweeks per your suggestions

Total Pt [1900]
HQ:
Praetor [140pts] – Artificer Armour, - Jump Pack, -Power fist
Moritat [140pt] -artificer armour, -jump pack, -melta bombs, x2 vulkite serpentas,
Librarian [125] mastery level 2, - Artificer Armour

Troops:
X2 Tacticals [250] Bare bones
Assault Squad [175]

Elites:
Destroyer Squad [425 pts] 10 men, -jump packs, -melta bombs, - venom spheres, x2 missile launchers w/ rad missiles
Gal Vorbak [225 pts] Dark Martyr: artificer armor, - Power Fist

Heavy:
Leviathan Siege dreadnaught [320 pts] - armored ceramite, cyclone melta lance, - storm cannon
Sicaran Venator [190 pts]

Mutatable tactic: Infiltrate
Rite of War: Coils of the Hydra

The Praetor would go with the assault squad. I could also drop the Librarian to give the Dreadnaught a drop pod.

If I did want to go for a more competitive 2k list, what would you guys recommend, especially in regard to rites of war

You can't have two non-Vigilator Consuls in Coils, you only get one. So Moritat or Librarian have to go, either is fine, they are both bad here.  Maybe instead you would take a Vigilator with jump pack as your second character? He would give the assault squad scout and stealth.

Deep striking melee units is usually not a great idea, as you have to weather a turn of fire.  Those Gal Vorbak will be sitting ducks, hence the recommendation for transports. Really, transports are recommended for most units in 30K, due to the potent artillery readily available to all the combatants.
