Winter Astra Militarum WWII german themed..

Full Stride

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I’ve been a lurker for ages, but to motivate myself I thought let’s start a topic for my latest hobby endeavours. It has been a wish to do something WWII themed for a long time, but my community is really only GW. Not really wanting to start Bolt Action or something on my own. As I also like to play (in tournaments), I have to stick to GW. I play in GW stores a lot, which limits me even further, so no cool third party bits, but I see that as a kind of challenge.I’ve decided on a WWII German themed guard army with some heavy weathering. It will be a 1000 point force for a team tournament in April, so plenty of time!. I wanted to try out some cool techniques on my vehicles, so it will be armour heavy and winter themed. Off course only GW imperial iconography, no political German cr@p...

The list will more or less be as follows:

Tank Commander (Tiger II)

Tank Commander (Tiger II)

Leman Russ (Tiger I)

Leman Russ (Tiger I)

Basilisk (88mm gun)

10 infantry with 3 snipers

2x scout sentinel (stil lto be built, Sdkfz 250?)

Here are some of the photo’s I’ve taken so far, I’ll keep you posted on updates.

Thanks guys!

Very impressive progress so far - well done!

I admit, I always get a bit nervous when I see somebody is doing a "WW2 German" Imperial Guard force, but these are great. :smile.:

True! I think there is a delicate balance between keeping in theme and going too far with the German look and tech. I believe it should stay within the 40k scene, but with an obvious influence of WWII stuff. A bit like the FW Death Korps, but then slightly different.

The Basilisk is a self-propelled howitzer. As your 88mm guns are obviously towed artillery, they're actually equivalent to the Earthshaker cannon (what the Basilisk mounts); Forge World published rules for a battery of towed guns.

Very true. I do have the FW index, but sadly the particular tournament I'm building the army for does not allow FW rules. Luckily they are familiar with the rule of cool, so as long as I'm not modelling for advantage, I'm allowed to use 'counts as' models. In the case they find my interpretation too loose, I can always mount the gun on some tracks, to resemble a Nashorn or something, since the gun is magnetised to the base. I just love the look of the 88 as a stand alone piece of artillery, so I decided to do it this way.

Your scratchbuilt tanks look great, but I notice they use the Chimera's tracks instead of the Leman Russ'. Will you mount the Leman Russ' sponson-mounted weapons onto the Chimera's tracks, kitbash a sponson yourself, or omit sponsons altogether?

I chose the chimera chassis because it's a bit longer than the Russ chassis and I think it's better suited for the german tank look.

Nice work so far, and either you have the patience of a saint or you may want to find an easier way to do all those stahlhelms lol.

Well there are plenty of cool third party bits suppliers, but as I'm a GW store regular, I had to model my way around it. They're far from perfect, but they do the job. It's a pain though to make them. I'm planning on picking the best one I've made so far and then make a small GS mold of it.. Keeps thing simple :)

Very nice! May I ask, why WWII- germans? :happy.:

Just a big fan of big ass German tanks I suppose.... (shermans and T34's are boring :P), so I've limited myself to 10 infantry and stick with armour.

I could also have gone Russian and just buy Valhallans, but I thought this was cooler... just personal I think.

And lastly, thanks for the great comments! I'll post some progress later today

Are the tanks' operators meant to be a regiment from an arboreal planet (its original camouflage pattern meant to blend into environments like Germany's Black Forest), but the tankers had to hastily and crudely apply arctic camouflage due to a sudden deployment? That would justify the olive drab spots on an otherwise white tank.

Spot on... Rapidly changing weather conditions mean the crewmen hastily apply a layer of white to blend in, but the top layers weather away due to the same conditions...

Lovely work, well done! :)

One thing that niggled me before, and which I've only just managed to identify: your tanks don't have muzzle breaks. As both Tigers and the Leman Russ have these, it might both complete the silhouette and "40k-ify" the vehicles more if you add back a LR-style muzzle break to each one.

True abaout the muzzle breaks. I have thought about it, but since the barrels are quite thick, I didn't really know how to add a good muzzle break. I personally don't like the Leman Russ ones and since the tiger barrels are much smaller in comparison I thought a tiger style break wouldn't look good either, so decided not to add one. But perhaps I runn into a good idea on the webs in the process of completing the army...
