Hey, bit of a newbie question I suppose but my opponent and I had our first taste of 8th Edition melee the other day and I had a question; we went with his idea that after models pile in (my guys had charged), only models within 1" of an enemy model or a friendly model that Is in range actually fight, resulting in 4 of my 5 Intercessors and then 5 of his 10 tzaangors battling, followed by the consolidation; is that right?

Also just to make sure because of my iron hands Chapter

Tactics; when hit by a multi damage weapon (Soulreaper Cannon) do I roll for each actual wound or just each unsaved hit? Or; hit for a single D2 weapon, roll one or two dice for wounds?

Close combat works very differently in 8th compared to previous editions.

In the example you gave, you charged, so you select your unit to fight. Your unit would pile in then fight 'pretty much' as you described (all models within 1" of an enemy model plus those 1" from a friendly model that is within 1" of an enemy model).

You'd resolve all your attacks, but your opponent wouldn't resolve his until it's his units turn to fight as close combat is not simultaneous.

Once all your charging units have attacked, each player then takes it in turns to activate a unit that is engaged in close combat and fight with them until all units that are engaged have fought.

When he activated his unit, they would have piled in, then fought. It sounds like you did all the pile in moves at the same time. If so, that's not right in 8th.

I'd strongly advise reading the close combat section of the rules thoroughly and pay close attention to the example given.

Thanks and yeah it was a little confusing; he mostly plays AoS and had one game of 7th, then we played a game of 8th last week but never closed into melee range that game, so this was our first experience. I don't know how AoS works but apparently it's similar but different; I charged, he piled in, then I piled in; he realized he did it wrong so I told him just leave it this time since it's our first time with it.

After my attacks resolved and I consolidated, he skipped his pile in (since he already did it) then attacked and consolidated.

So models do need to be close enough to attack, otherwise you can't bring the full power of a horde into melee without careful positioning.
