We Need More Activity: Codex Discussion and More

Hello all, we need more activity in this forum.

I have some thoughts, and I am requesting feedback.

1:

How would you feel if Grey Hunter packs gained the option to get Combat Shields?

Do you want said option of Shields to remain only in WH30K?

If this option were to become available, do you think that the Shield should be swapped out in place of the standard issue Boltgun?

2:

I am of the mindset that the Wolves should get access to both Helfrost and Grav, and I am sure this is still an opinion that I am in the minority holding to, however, I wanted to point out that, as far as why, Melta and Plasma are not the same thing, and the comparison of Helfrost and Grav is in a similar line.

3:

What are you working on, short term, in the next few months, and, if you are planning that far, long term?

4:

Considering that our Codex is supposedly going to release in the May-June timeframe of this year, do we want to get a wishlist thread going yet?

5:

What new options do you want for our Chapter, in game? I personally see gaining access to the Stormraven as being advantageous, because there is a great deal of threat value in having a flyer with a Grey Hunter pack, likely a Ven Dread with Axe and Shield, and mobility to cover a large area of the table quickly.

Still, I can understand others not liking the idea. However, from my perspective, the Wolf that does not use the maximum level of lethality possible at all times is not quite up to par as of yet. The issue here is, perspective is always both objective and subjective; getting to objective takes significant effort.

Shhhh quite down pup. The men are working. ^_^

Anyway, I'm super excited for what might be in store for the Space Wolves. They are almost, if not exactly, in the same position as the Blood Angels. A secret to protect. Devastated and in need of recruits. Proud and do not want their chapters to die. I wonder how they will respond to the Primaris. Love the new lore.

Pup? Wow, that's refreshing!

Yeah, I agree that our options are currently up in the air, however, the current situation is pretty solid as far as only being truly advantageous long term.

The Wolves have had time to regroup and recruit, thus, their numbers should be on their way back up. There is the issue of the Primaris, which is an entire area of discussion elsewhere as to how it was handled; that typed, with the influx of fresh blood, be they Claw or Primaris, there should be a significant chance to meet the enemy in new and intriguing ways looking forward.

The index has been more or less figured out. There really isn't much to discuss.

1) A basic marine body is not worth this investment. Getting shot at with a plasma gun still gives you a 6+ save so having a 5++ isn't great.

2) Hellfrost weapons can be fun but Grav got nerfed hard, better of just taking plasma weapons

3) Going to start some Custodes

4) Wishlists just end with people being disapointed they didn't get a whole bunch of toys despite no one else getting any either.

5) Outside of being able to drop an Axe dread in someones face I think the SW fliers are fine/better.

1. Our grey hunters fair better than their tactical cousins and they don't appear to give the tactical a buff anytime soon. So I doubt GH will get changed.

2. Helfrost would be a great addition as it gives us a weapon that can deal with squads of units or a single strong unit. I doubt it would rival Plasma this edition though.

3. Working on IG army, waiting on wolves as I feel uneasy about them.

4. No wish list we have enough.

5. Grey Slayers, I want a unit with Melee+Pistol+shield. It was the Wolf Guard until their nerf. Would be nice to have decent termies but it seems like all Terminators are having issue this edition.

Actually the wolves are luckier than the Blood Angels in the sense their "mutation" aka the wulfen, has been semi-endorsed by the Inquisition. It's a big gigantic plothole in the Wrath of Magnus campaign, but in the end, everyone was too tired to further persecute the Wulfen and just gave them a stamp of approval.

Lets hope somebody decent writes acceptable new lore on the Primaris in Space Wolves. Someone who actually reads old lore before writing new lore.

For OP, to answer 1 and 4 out of your 5 questions, I'm hoping for Primaris marines squads that will act and fight like Grey Hunters. Then the Combat Shields will make more sense. Otherwise, a 5++ on a 1 wound model isn't worth it.

For my part, I'm planning to make some Primaris Grey Hunters since thankfully, the weapons are still the same size. It'll be nice modelling.

1) I don't think that we will get combat shields on our hunter unit. It would be cool if we got a primaris unit with combat shield + ccw. Although that would fill a similar niche as the Wulfen.

2) No opinion on this one. Makes sense but it would require a lot of upgrades to kits. So I don't see it happening. Plus helfrost isn't good right now.

3) I was working on Long Fangs until my bits order for missile launchers got messed up. The launchers came but 10 of the 14 off-handed arms were wrong. Haven't heard back from the place I ordered from so I am trying to figure out a fix. That situation derailed my last SW inspiration. Anything SW is on hold until the codex comes out. Now I am working on Dark Eldar. Beautiful models. I hope their codex does them justice.

4) There may be a wishlist thread already. There was a thread on here that was close to it. Then again, a lot of threads turn into wish list threads. The anticipation is starting to get to us. The one person who knows (and has a NDA) said that it is going to be an awesome release so I am holding onto that. He doesn't post much anymore, I assume he doesn't want to be an oath-breaker. I respect that. Hope he is back once the codex is out! Would be interesting to hear from someone taking part in the design process on their thoughts.

5) I am interested in what stratagems we are going to get. Those are what make successful armies now. Russ coming back has a good chance of happening. And we may get some new units. Who knows?

If we get an actual Wishlist thread I could easily write more about what I want. I could easily channel my inner-millennial and write a block of text about all those wants lol.

We currently lack light aircraft. We have gunships and dropships in the shape of the Stormfang and Stormwolf but no interceptors or light gunships. Based on the BAs, I am kinda hoping we will get access to Stormtalons and Stormhawks. The DAs did not get access to these as they have the Nephilim and Darktalon for their light aircraft role but they did get access to the Stormraven to fill the dropship niche.

In my hopes and dreams:

1. Rules for 30k Marines (13th co)

-30k equipment vehicles

--thunderbird!

2. Rules for 40k Marines

3. Rules for primaris.

(1-3).

-we can make a mix and match army where we have veritable tons of unit/squad layouts.

--grey slayers with grey hunters and intercessors.

4. Helfrost more widely available

-hrlfrost pistols an option for HQ

-rifles an expensive option for long fangs and h uh hunters

-helfrost intercessor squad

-helfrost melee weapons

-rules rework into something interesting, not necessarily a mw dealer

--if you successfully damage a vehicle with helfrost that vehicle must make a dangerous terrain role, even if they have rules to ignore them.

---this would make helfrost hell for flyers

15$ helfrost weapon upgrade sprue(infantry only)

-helfrost pintle mount options for our tanks

5. Fenridisn wolves rewritten to have similar rule as saviour protocols for characters and HQ options

6. Obel for our scouts

7. Russ

8. First primarized characters.

1) I feel like having the 5++ would not be all that useful on the one wound models. Unless it was something ridiculously cheap like 1 point per model (which will most likely not happen). I think that if the shield were to become an option it would be swapped for either the Bolt Pistol or Boltgun as it is a Combat Shield so replacing the Chainsword would not make sense. I love how the 30k stuff looks so it would be cool to have some of it come back in the form of a single squad that can take it (a pack of 13th company marines or something along those lines).

2) I feel like we do not need Grav as it has become much less powerful than when it was available last edition. As for Helfrost I like the weapons and what they do I feel if they were to change the rules on them a little and switch up the points they could be a very interesting alternative to Plasma (maybe not competitive but interesting). If on the roll of a 6 you got to do mortal instead of regular wounds or one the roll of a 6 the unit suffers a mortal wound and halves their movement for the next turn (as they are kind of frozen from the weapon) that would be cool.

3) Short Term: A pack of Fenrisian Wolves to run as Cyberwolves for that cheap Outrider Detachment

Next Couple of Months: Magnetizing and painting the Bjorn/Ven Dread w/ Axe and Shield I picked up awhile ago to prepare for Codex release

Long Term: Magnetizing and painting the Imperial Knight I grabbed for a steal of a deal. Warden box so I can make every variant with it (hence the magnetization)

4) If a wishlist thread does not exist I think we should make it BUT I think we should wait some time before starting that. I feel like if we start hyping ourselves up too soon we could be setting ourselves up for disappointment. If we start it like a month to a month and a half before our "expected" release that would allow enough time for the hype to build and not feel like time is stretching forever. I also think the OP on the thread should have a warning to remember that this is a WISH LIST so that the salt is slightly reduced when not everything comes true, despite how awesome or feasible it sounds.

5) I think we could use some light aircraft and a non-FW way to bring our close combat dreadnoughts down right in front of our enemy. So if we got the Stormraven that would be cool or if we got access to the Stormtalon and Stormhawk that would help give us some options for flyers other than our large wolfy flyer. It will also be nice if we got access to the normal scout rules for our Wolf scouts as while the board edge deployment can be nice they do not really serve any purpose as expanding our footprint on the Table like other scouts do. Other than that I think we really have everything we need as far as a marine army goes.

Our scouts need some serious love.

They have been forgotten in the trash heap ever since SM scouts were upgraded to normal BS.

As an "elite" they do squat

OBEL is nothing in the current edition. Everyone deepstrikes wherever and whenever they want using stratagems. In prior editions they were the rare unit who would show up and then still get an assault.

To replace that they should get a special rule letting them move the same turn they OBEL or something

And for F sake give them infiltration or some deployment rules. They are elite scouts. Would be interesting if we could pull raven guard tricks with them.

Starting a wolf scout unit within 9 of the enemy and getting first turn could be fun. Scouts can carry a decent amount of plasma and the WG or scout PL can bring along a special weapon for the cherry on top

1. In 8th, tacmarines and their ilk are considered a subpar choice in general. This wouldn't be fixed by Combat Shields. First it would just increase the price of GH, which would make them even less point efficient, second, they usually die to the volume of attacks, not the quality. Against non-heavy weapons they still get a 4+/5+ save most of the time. Third, from a design standpoint, Combat Shields would suit an elite unit better, like Wolf Guard (which already have access to Storm Shields).

2. Helfrost is unique to SW, the trade off for that is no grav weapons. I'd prefer they figure out a proper purpose for it, because right now it's a mix of a weaker plasma cannon and a multi-melta without the re-roll. Also it's availability is rather limited.

3. Rebasing and repainting my Space Wolves, but probably I just start over, because I have enough unasembled models lying around :D

4. Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment. We have no clue in which direction GW wants to take SW next. But here it is: fix the wolf scouts, don't nerf the TWC, being able to mount Wolf Priests on Thunderwolves :D

5. SW won't get access to the Stormraven as the Stormfang already fulfills it's purpose. As mentioned, I too would like to see ground support (Stormtalon) and interceptor (Stormhawk) aircrafts added.

1. I agree with the opinion that making GH even more expensive is not that good thing to do given how they are inferior to primaris in many instances. I would say that I do not expect that GH will be buffed given that BA/DA have their tacmarines as they are, I do not think it will be exception. Also our release will go with wolfey primaris, so buffing/fixing GH will be a stupid move in terms of good sales. What I do expect however, is that our primaris will be as wolfey comparing to regular primaris as GH to tactmarines. So give the Serg at least power axe option (more wolfey than sword), and let them have WGPL for some options. Also I will feel kinda unhappy about lack of chainswords, even though the amount of attacks for primaris is same, I feel that a true wolf going to battle without melee weapon is kinda not fluffy at all.

2. I do not mind if we keep only helfrost but make it available to RB and infantry as special weapon. Though available is not enough, I would like it to be playable. I do not feel it is that good on dreads, however it is priced lower then plasma canon & multi-melta. So should the same logic apply to plasma gun and melta gun, i.e. frost gun priced 11-12 points having a melta profile w/o re-roll, that could be an option already.

3. Short-term I am working on Stormwolf and ±20 more GH/BC/LF bodies, since I played my squads of interrcessors unpainted, I decided I better wait for wolfey primaris so that I do not paint them twice. I have converted regular HB and inceptors nto wolf-style guys using bits already.  Long-term I am planning to grab Leviathan and some FW tanks.

4. I think there are plenty of talks already.

5. Stratagems and chapter tactics. I normally play MSU so rarely need morale re-roll. That is why my CP are always re-rolls only (sometimes Wullfen on hunt).

As for flyers. I am strongly against getting access to Stormraven as we have our dropships which is thematic and have decent stats. Maybe give it an option to get upgrade for some pts to transfer Dreadnought (probably at the price of loosing some other options).
However, I expect that it would make dread drops too powerful and almost auto-include, at the same time making "kill the dropship" No. 1 priority for your opponent. BlizzDread/Bjorn are way stronger then regular Dread in melee. I would not mind getting some mobility shenenigans for them though. Like some stratagem allowing blizzdread to make a charge after advance, to make a 3 dice charge, to make a second movement in the same turn etc. If that appears to be too powerful, it can give him -1 WS for the rest of the turn or get D3 mortal wounds for engine overload etc.

Great discussion all.

Since there are so many replies, I will just type up for now that, I am very thankful for the well put and well thought out replies, from each of you.

1: I personally would figure the Combat Shield would be 0 or 1 points, to swap.

2: As far as Helfrost and Grav go, I can understand the perspective of Helfrost preventing us from getting Grav, however, the comparison is still sound that Helfrost and Grav are in the same relation to Melta and Plasma. Said Helfrost and Grav are not the same, as Melta and Plasma are not the same. Still, how this is handled is going to be important.

3: I am currently in need of getting some 30K Grey Slayers built, for 40K I have ten or so WGPL's to build anew, as, I do not have magnetized ones for my PF/SS WGPL's. As far as medium and long term goals are concerned, I am debating what and how to approach things as my build order is going to end up working out.

4: Fair, and, I do like the idea of waiting until closer to the actual release to start any dedicated wish list thread.

5: CP's are a pretty rare thing, I am curious as to what we will end up with, in our Codex.

Fliers: I am still of the current mindset that adding the Stormraven to the Wolves range of fliers would only aid us, and, the target value due to its points sink for all the units involved might just outweigh the advantage it would provide. I do as well enjoy the thought of the Wolves adding the Stormhawk and Stormtalon as we do need light, or, escort flyer duty as well.

Regarding the chap under NDA where is the post saying we will have an awesome release? This long wait is sapping all my hobby hype and I could really really use the boost

Man the post was from awhile ago. But I remember it like it was yesterday. I think the quote was "You guys don't even know what you don't know."

To me it translates to "Awesome release".  Either that or he thinks we are all idiots. Or both. :) *shrug*

Edit: There was more context in the thread to what he said that made me translate that statement into "awesome release." To be honest I expect it to be a really good book. Most of the codexes released have been pretty good. Some better than others though.

While helfrost vs grav comparison is akin to melta vs plasma, the one key uniqueness of helfrost is that it has two fire modes (sans pistol), allowing for the flexibility of single target vs groups. Personally, I'd love to see a twin helfrost sponson option on our flyers instead of the twin-melta.

1. Combat Shields are 4 points in all other codicies. But again, that would solve nothing. The issue is that they share the same slot and battlefield role with primaris, which are now too point efficient (don't forget, they started at 24 points, which was ballanced).

2. Helfrost doesn't have it's own identity. The pistol is a melta pistol that deals mortal wounds, the cannon can shoot a nerfed plasma cannon shot or a multi-melta without the half range re-roll. The destructor has a shot that's good against armored multi-wound models, like terminators (this overlaps with grav) and again a nerfed twin-linked multi-melta profile. It doesn't really have an identity/definitive purpose.

And what's the point of taking it? On dreads you rather take the assault cannon agains hordes or take a TL lascannon, for long range anti-armor. On fliers it's just there.

Fliers: As I already said, the Stormfang serves the same role (gunship) and has very similar firepower, the only difference is that it cannot carry a dreadnought. And actually this is your point. You don't want a Stormraven, you want a way to transport your CC dreadnoughts into threat range. Having such an option would be nice, but I douth we get the Stormraven for that.

1. I don't think our basic troops are going to get upgraded much, due to primaris, in fact I think a little points reduction might encourage their continued use.

2. Personally I'd love more Helfrost just because it's fluffy.

3. Right now I'm working on my 1st Knight (hopefully 1 of 3) and need to finish off some Scions/AettGuard. Then I want to get moving on my 2nd Great Company, which will be fully motorised.

4. I hate wishlisting, it leads to disappointment.

5. I know it's not going to happen (see above ; ) ), but I would love if we didn't get Primaris and instead got buffed up 13th Company (Ashes of Prospero). I think this would help keep us one of the non-codex compliant codex. I know the primaris seem to auto-include but if the Grey Slayers were done correctly they might offer another option and be more in keeping with our traditions. There would be valid lore to back this up as it is always said that the Astartes geneseed has degenerated and these returning 13th company wolves would be more purestrain and maybe close enough to par with the primaris.

On the issue of vehicles, I've always believed that all the chapters should have access to all of the armoury available. Let the chapters have their own little adaptations like the Baal predator or the DA/SW fliers, it the codex chapters feel hard done by why not have GW come up with new upgrade kits for vehicles or even some new ones.

I'd also like to see Fen wolves be allowed travel in vehicles, it makes no sense that they can't and our scouts should be unique, since they aren't recruits like the other chapters, rather seasoned veterans. If this lead to a points increase, so be it, just buff them accordingly.

that would be one way of making our scouts more awesome.

give them synergy with fenrisian wolves.

OBEL w/ move full movement stat upon arriving before the movement phase

-- THis is also pushed to fenrisian wolves deployed with them

While all of this is great, I do feel the need to just mention one thing, and it is somewhat fluff relevant: the Adeptus Mechanicus is rather loathe to allow any new things being made. Sure, the Stormwolf or Stormfang being given the ability to transport a Dread is a great idea, true; there's also no real reason when, if GW should decide that the Wolves get the Stormraven, the same thing is accomplished, and is actually more in line with in game fluff.

This is of course a remains to be seen issue; I for one hope we as a playable faction get the Stormraven. If not, oh well; just me having to pine longer and waiting to get access to said Stormravens.

I would like GW to do something with the SW hat has no been done with other chapters. That is address the primaris marines into something beyond he current release.

Primaris Rune Priest.

Primaris wolf priest.

Primaris wpbl

Access for these to get frost weapons.

More information on how Primaris integrates into the SW chapter.

Also how the wolves spears chapter is, do they follow the SM codex or are they Influenced by the SW, do they have Chaplin’s or wolves priests. Rune Priest or librarians. What makes them special.
