Color suggestion for dark crimson tanks

Hello all, Im in the process of resurrecting an old CSM force of mine (Word Bearers). Originally i had done this with Red Gore (similar to Khorne Red) and Magenta ink making a dark crimson color.

Ive scoured the net extensively and tried Khorne Red Air with a Carroburg Crimson wash, while it works for infantry I attempted this on a Fire Raptor hoping to darken the red but the finish on the flat areas was too streaked by the wash. Im tempted to go for Mephiston Red over it but im uncertain.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe that Vallejo Game Colour Gory Red is a decent match for the old Crimson Gore, and is cheaper as well.

For the magenta ink, Liquitex make something that I think would be suitable; their Quinacridone Magenta ink. You may find that letting it settle out makes the ink more transparent; you can always pour this off and keep it in a spare pot, and then just chuck the sludgy remains away.

I think that would be good and economic match for your previous colour set-up, and means that you don't have to change what you were doing before. :smile.:

Thanks for the advice Major, that actually looks like a fairly close match, probably moreso over a black primer.

Im willing to bet the local art shop carries that Luquitex stuff, ill have to check it out. I thought Carroburgh was a close match but the shades are much thicker than the old inks used to be.

I've used luquitex inks a bit. They tend to be very very vibrant, which is good, but do tend to dry fairly glossy, at least for me, and don't always have the best coverage on their own. I tend to add a little distilled water and some Vallejo "thinner medium" to give straight inks a little better coverage, otherwise they tend to pool away from edges. If it's your first time using "artists inks" I definitely recommend experimenting on a junker model first to get a feel for how they flow and cover before applying them to an important model.

I haven't overall been too impressed by the liquitex inks, except the bright yellow which I use for headlights and stuff. The red didn't impress me (have their "naphthol crimson"), but neither have the Dawler-Rowney red I've tried, and they tend to work a little better overall. May just be a hard color to get right for this kind of 3d use?

Forge World's Gal Vorbak Red is a nice colour which I intend to paint my Space Marine tanks with. It's thinner than typical GW acrylics and I haven't tried painting it over large areas but I've not had difficulties applying it to models so far. Hopefully it's dark enough that you wouldn't need to add the magenta ink to get the right colour. If you are trying to match a colour from your exisiting army it might be what you want, though.
