2000pts Vs Tau

Hey guys,

Long time reader first time poster here, pretty excited about the new codex and wanted to share my first game I had with it. 2000pts vs Tau, regular Maelstrom mission.

My army List was

1k sons Battalion  +3

Ahriman on Disc - Death hex -- Prescience -- Doombolt-

Daemon prince  w/wings & talons   *Warlord w/ Aetherstride  --Diabolical Strength -- Warptime

Sorcerer in terminator armour  w/ Dark matter Relic -- Warptime--Glamour of Tzeentch--

22 Tzaangors w/ blades

10 tzaangors w/ blades

10 tzaangors w/ blades

9 SOT w/ 1 SRC & 1 Hellfire Missles

1 Tzaangor Shaman w/ helm of third eye relic  -- Weaver of Fates --

9 spear enlightened

9 bow enlightened

Tzeentch Daemons Outrider + 1

Fateskimmer ( herald on chariot )  -- Gaze of Fate -- Flickering Flames --

3 x 3 Screamers of Tzeentch

I was facing a Tau list that was roughly as follows

1 x Yhvara ( look out for these.. )

5  x Commanders w/ Quad fusion guns ( All deepstriking )

2 x HQ's that just shot marker lights on 2+ and not much else

About 15 marker light drones

20+ gun drones

3 x 10 squads of a fire warriors ( the guys with str5 rapidfire @15" who did a lot of work ! )

Few shield drones scattered throughout

Pregame -

Deployment was Front-Line assault

I deployed up front of my zone ( Surprisingly small deployment zone and  disc-gors have a large foot print

I made a mistake in deployment immediately, you'll find out in a second..

I won first turn but of course, was seized on. …. Great start  :tongue.:

Turn one- Tau

He drops in 3 commanders out of the 5 total,  2 on one flank where my  shaman was behind a few foot gors. Bad placement by me as he was able to wipe out just enough of that squad with his troops at a distance, erase the shaman with the relic before it earned me a single point :sad.: Bad form..

Other than that, he took out a few screamers and several foot gors, nothing too harsh.

He scores 2 I believe, first blood + a secure random obj

Turn one - 1ksons

Dropped in the termi Sorc + SOT only space I could at the time, middle of the board to erase a unit  of his troops marching down the center.

Dropped the 22 footgors only place I could fit them on his right flank with his Yhvara in hopes id be able to make the 8" charge ( cuz the Brayhorn )

Psychic phase was amazing, got most everything off, keeping higher cast costs on Ahriman and Term Sorc with Familiar and  that extra 6" is huge…. Its amazing how much it helps with position.

Warptimed my Spear-goats to the flank with Double commanders and wiped them out with the help of prescience and the " cycle of Slaughter " stratagem. Worth every CP on these guys when theyre on the charge, especially when buffed.

My blob of foot gors miss there 8" charge ( used a reroll I had from Gaze of fate, never lucky man)

Fateskimmer w/ Screamers make the charge on the other flank, clear the other solo commander and alas  my lines are clear.. For now.

Who knew tzeentch would be so competent in CC

I score 1 and am defending another obj in the mid table with 3 screamers.

Tau T2 -

He hits back hard… Big Tau turn coming up

Yhvara jumps up into the SOT grill, Auto 3d6 hits with a damage 3 weapon…. Wipes out the unit with 17/18 auto hits… unreal. Roughly 390 pts gone in the blink of an eye, and that was with Glamour and Weaver of fates on them :sad.:

His regular troops are into rapid fire range at this point and PUNISH my screamers on the front line, wiping out 1 unit and 2/3 of another. They also clean up the remaining two footslogging gor units that started on the table.

Last 2 commanders drop down, wipe out my last screamers holding the obj I needed to hold to score.

The fishmen are looking to be in a commanding position here..

Overall decent turn for him, think he scores another 2 pts

1ksons T2 -

I start kiting everything i can away from his remaining firewarriors & gun drones  ( mass Str 5 shooting is                    pretty efficient, especially against the favoured of tzeentch with our 4++ or 5++ )

I use the Term Sorcs relic to Darkmatter himself across the board to an objective I needed, and he basically holds down that objective for the rest of the game with no one in range to Glamour but himself.

Bow tzaangors started chipping away on the Yhvara

Once again, I have commanders in my line to clear before I try to focus on the Yhvara completely, so I move the last of the screamers, herald, and the unit of Spear enlightened ( warptimed to ensure the charge ) closer to them. Ahrimans Prescience is reliable and in range as usual with that extra 6 ", and tossed a death hex on the shield drones that accompanied the commanders for good measure.

Those units cleared the commanders with ease  ( Giving me warlord ) and consolidated back onto an objective I needed to hold. I scored 1 obj and hold the line  this turn….

But im dwindling fast

Tau T3 -

His Yhvara and fire warriors turn there attention to my blob of 20 Gors in his lines and mop them up pretty thoroughly…. I certainly didn’t use them to the best of there ability tho I did get unlucky with there charges.

He unleashed heck on my spear goats who had consolidated on a objective I needed to hold, killing all but 3, and by the good grace of Tzeentch I passed my morale test on a 1 to ensure id keep it.

Other than that, he didn’t draw well and didn't score.

Bad Tau Bad

1k Sons - T3

At this point I have Ahriman with an entourage of Bow goats left ( 7 ? ) , 3 spear goats, Herald on chariot w/ 2 screamers, and my Daemon prince.  Im starting to feel like I might get tabled, but I had a decent draw of cards so I play to  the mission.

I chip away at the Yhvara with smites and bows and a HUGE hail mary, aka… Doombolt…  Ahriman pulls it off which ensures that I will stay out of his lethal 8" range even if moves  ( Doombolt Shutting down advance as well was ideal ! Keep those assault weapons at bay )  Anyways, Doombolt was huge here, enabled Ahriman to kite him.

I scored big on this turn, ( got Supremacy for 3 and my hold obj for 2 ) putting me ahead…. Just needed to hang on and avoid his remaining fire warriors.

Our mobility is excellent, other than footslogging Gors everything in the army moves 12"... quite excellent for maelstrom games at least. This really allowed me to spread out the characters and score supremacy.

Tau t4 -

His fire warriors move onto some objectives and wipe up a few bow goats, moves drones onto another obj and his only hope in catching up is limping his Half-moving ( doombolted! ) Yhvara back onto an obj he needs to hold to get those 2 pts.

This opens the door for me to finish the game if I can push that Yhvara off whilst remaining out of rapid fire range of his firewarriors.

1ksons T4 -

I move Ahriman within 6 of the Yhvara and the daemon prince to 9" away ( 9" being crucial to stay out of his 3d6 Auto hits ) this is where the warlord trait becomes huge… I have reroll charge (warlord Trait)  and also Gaze of fate re roll in my pocket if one of the charge dice are good.

Guess it was more of a comfort thing… cuz of course I didn’t even need it !  Fate was with me, as my warlord makes his charge after powering up with Diabolical strength.

The death hexed Yhvara couldn’t hold up before Ahriman AND the daemon prince.

After that he was left with a few troops around the board and markerlight drones that wouldnt do much... That was the concede and handshake, for a 1k Sons win !

Overall review -

Our 6" extension to powers comes into play every single turn.. Its great. Truly.

Ahriman is a crutch to the army, i can't see myself playing many games without him. All those 7+ cost powers feel at home with him.

Doombolt is a massive utility, but I wouldn’t count on it without using the Cabal Stratagem

Tzaangors are great..….They're cheap and effective, tho fragile still mind you.

The Enlightened with spears don’t care much about the toughness of models when powered up with prescience.
Cycle of slaughter stratagem is a great insurance policy, ensuring you finish off those models with "fly" keyword before they can hop away and shoot you.

Daemon princes as warlords seem like they have some serious potential. The warlord traits really cater to their strengths.  3++ or advance/charge w/ rerolls or even the +1 to cast. All good choices.

Overall I'm really excited about the potential of this book, still feel like I need a double battalion to ensure enough command pts tho ( using Tzeentch daemon battalion )

Once again, this is my first post so if there is anything you think I can improve on in future reports lemme know Got another match tomorrow with some space marines, I'll make sure to get some pictures to go along with the report :smile.:

Thanks guys !

Great report sir. Glad to hear the legion trait is standing out as i hoped it would.

Sweet, sweet action by the Arch Sorcerer making the cabal earn their salt!!

Good call ! They're a total glass cannon but excellent counter assault unit. Feel like they're damage output can be far above there Pt's Class.

Thanks for the feedback guys :) I've got another match set up for today, so i'll make sure to snap a few pics and report back.

I've been running Ahriman + exalteds for a long time and I think it's time to run a Prince as my 2nd HQ.

The daemon princes are amazing to be honest, they were good before but the extra power and there exclusive ability to take from the Tzeentch discipline means your getting that Gaze of fate off ( if you didnt take any Daemon allies ) or you can have a solo beatstick casting Diabolical strength on himself and Warptiming where you need to be.    Today i'll be running two, cuz they mix so well in an army paired with Tzeentch Daemons.

I honestly do expect our princes to be nerfed come the FAQ, thats why I am shying away from them along with the fact EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER at my FLGS plays princes non stop no matter what chaos army I see, we have one khorne army that regularly puts down 3-4 in a 2k list.  another 1k son player that has 2, and a nurgle player that takes 2-3.

I got so sick of seeing them that I am sticking with Exalted for the time being (I mean... I am biased but the princes are cool but so overused! lol

As for the Enlightened I agree entirely; definitely a glass cannon but they pull above their weight class with minimal help, honestly without prescience my 6 have been pulling very well. I plan to get another 9, probably divide it straight down the middle, half spears, half bows.

Even outside TS, princes are a head and shoulders above hq; they give you buff bubbles, psychic, and the killing power to take down an Imperial hero all in one inexpensive package. It’s hard to not take 2, and it would be more if o *had* more.

Tz dps, with the buffed power and the better save, are even more ridiculous auto-includes. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw their stat line.

Daemon Princes have always been an auto include though. in 6th and 7th I always ran at least 5.

Well i might just have to pick up some enlightened and put the spears on them. Which is good becuase I love the models. I too have run Ahriman with them. I feel like he can buff them and put out some good shooting powers.
