The command was given, the xenos was to die here and now. His brothers and the guard-beasts crowded around seemingly blocking any assault but to the Raptors eyes they only narrowed the paths of escape, the towering creatures blades held low as it struck against those thrust towards it only served to expose its upper body.

Atratus lept high, the grav plates of his pack augmenting his inhuman strength as he twisted in the air to strike a blow to the creatures neck before momentum carried him once more beyond the fray.

From his position, just a little farther back Tyber saw what happened, the lesser beasts moved to take hits for the overlord. His lips pursed together for a moment before calling over the squad vox, +Vorr, put a krak missile into that last pillar! Ahu, keep the presser on the Overlord, show it the might of the Claws.+

As much as he wanted to stand against the Overlord, Tyber understood that the lesser beasts needed to be brought low first.

The Red Talon brings his missile launcher up, sighting for the briefest of moments before launching a Krak Missile upon a hissing spear of flame and smoke. The Missile goes wide, impossibly, corkscrewing off to detonate against the far side of the flesh cavern. Vorr shakes his helm, as though he were an ursid with a sore head.

The central pillar - the Red Talon's intended target - crackles with alien electricty and psychic power, confusing the Devastator's attempt to target it.

The overlord struck back against the attack of the astartes with contemptuous ease, bolt and chain barely scratching its hide. But all things had a weakness... once more the Raptor lept forward and struck but this time little more than a feint as he sought to turn the beast, the augers in his helm seeking any chink in its armour. The creature moved to follow but Varvost and Montesa pressed the attack despite their grevious wounds.

Atratus could see that had little chance to hold its attack for long, but they had done so for long enough as he dropped to the ground just beyond the reach of the xenos and raised his rifle once more.

New round, so call Furious Assault and pile in.

Atratus will use the free charge on the overlord to try and draw off it's dodge, assassin strike out and then use his normal action to aim and shoot after any other attacks (such as Varvost) have had their chance.

d100 to hit (charge) = 6

3d10 tearing damage = 5 1 2 1 = 8+16 = 24, Pen 3   (1 whole point of damage)

d100 hit and run = 35 - pass - back out to 16m

------(normal action)------

d100 to hit (half aim and shoot) = 59 = hit (BS 42+10(range)+20(aim),+30(size)) ... in the legs again

3d10 tearing damage = 3 1 8 10

righteous fury 10

more righteous fury 10

even more righteous fury 2

Well that's going to get someones attention... fate point at the ready to reroll a failed dodge when the thing comes for payback...

Sniper damage = 47, Pen 7, Felling(2)

NARRATIVE PLACEHOLDER

- Sabaan, annoyed with Vorr missing such an obvious target attempts to shoot the pillar, only to suffer the same deleterious effects.

- It is a psychic effect, the full force of the so-called Shadow of the Warp

- Varvost loses his leg and goes down fighting

- Any of you could take a free Forbidden Lore (Xenos) test to know that whilst the Tyrant may be drawing power from the pillars, destroying the pillar will not eliminate the Tyrant, who will still need to be killed.

++++

With the strange influences nce of the alien mind no longer interfering with his  higher cognitive functions, Sabaan  realised that they were facing a critical  turning point of events.

The probability of the kill team  being slaughtered by the dominant Xenos command form and it’s shield nodes was rapidly  increasing as the Astartes splitting  into smaller groups, while the Xenos held  the cohesion, enforced by their vile biochemical and psychic enslavement to the endless craving hunger  their species.

His mind raced through the data looms and cognition  buffers for both of the experiences among his own Chapter and Clan as well as  and the battle drills and hypno-conditioning  they had underwent after joining the Deathwatch. He began petitioning a part of his mind, attempting to consciously review those early moments the battle of we was   only dimly aware. There was a need to consciously assess and update the  Calculus , to focus beyond the sheer, automated motions and adapt, to develop a common strategy.

Some of the aspects where to be expected and he easily included them into the developing Calculus. Armour status. Ammunition count. Upper body strength. Abrasive force along the teeth of chain weapon in active combat. Other factors were  less easily quantified, but not unprecedented.

The utter revulsion in the presence of the Xenos tyrant form. The rage at the core of his Medusan nature. The almost physical  need to face the beast down himself, close,to bring it down by himself and established the superiority  of the Great Work, of his chapter. The hunting instincts of  his tribal ancestors..

The Iron Creed focussed his thoughtstream, grated those impulses to forge the Calculus into the killing edge needed here. He needed  to remain focused, to choose a more tactical solution.

Should he close with the beast and enforce the melee or hold the position, securing a fall back option to the Astartes ahead?

Now more than ever he felt the absence of a noospheric  clade link limiting, the delay in developing a tactical response endangering the mission at this pivotal time.

To his surprise, Sabaan  became aware of a rather unfamiliar glitch that seemed to further complicate assessing the tactical situation.

Focussing, he noticed an uncommon hesitation, an unwillingness  to leave the  Astral  Claw  Devastator, prone behind that bloated amalgam that was his heavy weapon on the alien living landscape beside him. The battle brother that had ripped him from the falling wreckage and had remained at his side lwhen their shuttlecraft had crashed down on Syndalla.  The battle brother who had shielded him after he had been to follow the most  basic patterns of battlefield engramic operation, as his mind was suddenly plucked away from the communion with the void craft’s decaying machine spirit. almost mindlessly thumping through the ruins, lost to his automotive function. It was  an eerie sensation,

Unwelcome in it’s emotional pull, and Sabaan hated how that ultimately lead to a moment of indecisiveness.

And  so,  he remained at his position, calmly aiming, firing..

 All  that remained was to put his feet evenly on the alien soil and trust in the Omnissiah that his  shortcoming at this point would not result in catastrophe  for the rest of the team. The Voices chided him, mocked him, raged inside his thoughtstream. His  anger  intensified. He mentally tried to push it forward, outward and into every bold he sent across the cavern. But not all of it was directed at the xenos. But he could not,  would not fail now...

Sabaan will attempt the Lore test (Xenos) in an attempt to establish target priorities

(kill the tyrant first? Would be It be easier to kill the tyrant if the pillars are destroyed first?)

Spent a fate point to heal in preparation of possible close combat)

The missile and bolter rounds going wide around the tower sent an alarm bell off in Tyber’s head and he recalled the sparing match on the Voice of Thunder.

+++

He had Akkad at a disadvantage in close quarter, ready to deliver a finishing blow for this sparing match just as the smaller Astartes ducked under his guard to land a fist that contained a krak grenade.

+++

+Ahu, can you explain to Vorr how you won our duel? I have an idea that might work for taking down the tower.+ he called over the vox, hoping that Akkad would understand.

Turning his attention back to the beast before him, Tyber begun to lay into the beast.

+Ahu, can you explain to Vorr how you won our duel? I have an idea that might work for taking down the tower.+

Akkad grimaced as his mind fled back to the sparring and replayed it instantly.

+My Brother not of Blood,+ he replied, his tone firm and without reproach, +I could do so, but our squad is dying by inches.  Once we have secured the battlezone, then we will cut the last thread.+

He reached for fresh ammunition, checking the second box of Kraken was ready to deploy.  He did his best to impart wisdom, and not lecture.

+You think well, but do not let your guard down - kill the threat first.+

Achieving objectives was one thing, wasting ordnance whilst their brothers lay broken and ruined on the floor of an alien cesspit was another.

The xenos did not take the bait, its single minded focus was to kill the foe before it ... or was it protecting the last pillar? The thought flashed through the Raptors mind to try and drag it from its place as he rushed in once more about to call to Montesa to join him as he saw the creatures blade come down.

Psychic energy crackled from the blow, Atratus unsure if it was some last desperate protection of the librarian or the strike of the overlord as it turned to face him with blade ringing against blade. Once again the Raptor sought to draw him away as the xenos ducked back under fire from Greysight, but this time as Atratus raised his rifle the creature shifted its posture and the shot merely scoured a line across its carapace.

Was it learning to predict the attacks, or had the hives biology already begun to adapt to resist their weapons?

Same as before, declare furious assault and then drop back and fire

Watching Teralil grind off one the limbs of the sub-beasts in a meaty response to the maiming of Varvost brought nothing but satisfaction.  This was how they were to die.  Blow for blow, blood for blood.  It was the way of the Warders and proof, if it were needed, that the Astartes were the chosen implement of Mankind's Destiny.

The stars would be human.  If necessary, one bolt shell at a time.

Akkad's Actions:

Akkad Sustains Strongpoint.

Free Action, Call target: Tyrant Overlord.

Full Action: Full Auto Burst at Called target.

Hit 1 (Left Leg!): 17

Hit 2 (Right Leg): 21

Hit 3 (Body): 23

Hits: 3

Total Damage: (A paltry 61!)

As the beast took more punishment from the Marksman, it stumbled just enough to miss several rounds aimed at it's groin, meant for a disembowelling salvo.  Instead it split and cracked the already damaged chitin-flesh.  A snarl was all he got in reply, instead of the intended wet slap of spilled innards.

<AMMUNITION LOW>

"We will be your end, monster."

The command beast loomed ahead, every fiber in his body demanded to charge it. Yet he had seen brothers do just that, and fall before it. He had witnessed his own weapons being deflected from the hides of these larger beasts, and he hated it. He hated that at this moment he understood what he must do, he needed to keep the command beast’s attention off of his brothers while they delivered the killing blow. Tyber understood that his legend wouldn’t lose anything by not killing the beast himself, rather just standing against it would add to his legend. With a clearing breath, he called over the vox to his brothers, +I will try and hold it, while the rest of you bring it down.+
