Returning to the bridge, Vorkys addressed the squad. “Swordhand, to the embarkation deck. Brother Thorvald will remain behind to guard the ship and help coordinate our movements. Captain Rubio, you have the bridge barring direct orders otherwise. We launch immediately.”

Turning on his heel he left the bridge and quickly made his way to the embarkation deck. He opened his vox to the bridge, “Xenocide, please confirm connection and then provide clearance for take off.”

Vorkys turned to the assembled squad in the dim lighting of the compartment, the red of the running lights washing over the ceramite battle plate of his brothers. “Helmets on and keep your seals tight. Our primary target is the bridge. Resistance unknown if any, we will make a low level pass to allow Brother-Codicier Achillion to search for potential threats prior to boarding. Any questions?”

The Stormbringer quickly followed the Watch-Sergeant down to the Xenocide's small hangar bay. Scarlet warning beacons flashed and klaxons sounded as dozens of Watch serfs scurried around a monstrous black shape, performing last minute checks.

A Stormraven gunship. Titus had little experience with this type of craft, as his Chapter preferred the more elegant Stormeagle. He found his lip curling involuntarily. This machine looked like a rock with wings.

He drew closer, saw the banner painted along one flank and stopped dead. Warhawk. One of the titles claimed by the Khagan himself. An auspicious designation for such a vehicle. Titus did not know if the transport had been named in honour of the Great Khan, but he certainly hoped it might grant the ungainly looking beast some measure of his Primarch's speed, grace and cunning.

The aged suit of Mark IV marched as Gideon made his way into the Hangar. Abiding to his Sergeant's Orders, he donned his helmet, becoming accustomed to the sudden activation of the Helmet's Auto Senses. As they approached the Warhawk, Gideon began to think upon the operation ahead. Close-Quarters warfare...he'd heeded the words of his more void-warfare inclined brothers in his weapon selection and as he approached the Shuttle, Inspected his Meltagun. While not of a scale which would put a Salamander to shame, he nonetheless admired the handiwork which had gone into the weapon.

His admiration over, he held the weapon in both his hands as he continued onto the shuttle, ready to deal an incredibly heated death to the foes of the emperor.

Boros slowed his jog to an unhurried march as he reached his destination. Much of the spartan hangar was filled by the armoured might of the Warhawk and made even smaller by the full squad of Space Marines beginning to trickle in. He approached Titus, whose attention was entirely subsumed by the gunship’s unseemly figure. At the sight of the Stormbringer’s disdain, the Devastator remembered being much the same when he first laid eyes upon the craft. The memory made him cut the slightest of smiles. Hefting his heavy bolter in his left hand - a feat made far easier by the newly-installed suspensor web - he placed the one made of steel and circuits on his squadmate’s silver pauldron. A Pataran proverb sprang to mind.

“Crooked logs make straight fires, kinsman. The ship will deliver us swiftly enough, graceless as it may be.” Boros’ thoughts returned briefly to the curious auspex readings from the Riches Untold, and his mood sank again. “Now come. We’d best get this over with”, he concluded, trudging up the gang ramp of the Stormraven.

"Aye brother sargent," Atreus said in response to Kol. "How close does Achillon have to get to read for life signs? I may be difficult to maintain a steady flight pattern with so much debris in the void." He waited for his sargents response before nodding and asking his second question, "Where and how will we make our ingress into the ship exactly?"

Atreus will consider his sargent's response before heading to the launch bay and preparing the ship for transit. He assits the tech adepts and others involved with the maintenance and operation of the ship in the rights of the machine god. He intones the sacred chants of maintenance and prepares the machine spirit of the noble machine for what may come.

Satisfied after the appropriate apeasment, and application of sacred oils he steps back to observe the ship before climbing aboard and stowing his equipment.

The guards on the landing platform have all been torn apart by fire, allowing the six of you to move forward unimpeded. As you advance, the double doors to the house open. Titus:

As you enter the Storm Raven's hold, you notice a brass plaque bolted to the bulkhead; you can see the design of an upraised sword, coruscating with flame. You recognise it as the sigil of the Marauders, a second-founding successor of the White Scars legion. Underneath, you can see carefully enscribed runes in Chogorian - only a descendant of Jaghatai Khan would be able to read it:

WARHAWK

As upon the plains of Chogoris,

So unto the void eterne.

Titus reached out, almost hesitantly, and ran his armoured fingers gently down the vertical lines of flowing script. The Marauders. Proud defenders of Humanity since the 2nd Founding itself. His own kin, fellow scions of the White Scars Legion and exemplars of the Chogorian way of making war.

The Stormbringer did not know how the gunship had found its way from the armouries of the Marauders to the Deathwatch of Azurea, but he did know that he must now re-evaluate his first impressions of its design. If his blood-cousins used and trusted the Stormraven, then he must be willing to do the same. He must give the Warhawk a chance to prove itself.

He nodded to Boros as the squad engaged their drop harnesses.

"You are right, brother," he acknowledged. "I will not call her the most… beautiful... of steeds, but it seems there is much more to her than meets the eye."

The squad pressed forward, traipsing over the ruined remains of the walkway's sentries with little regard. As they seized the positions of makeshift cover the portcullis at the other end swung open and from inside came a heaving mass of marshalled mortal men to stand defiant against the Deathwatch. Rallied by an officer and fully prepared for combat, this contingent of guards could prove for a more interesting engagement. Alone or in small smatterings, there is little mortal men armed with mortal weaponry can do to pose a threat to an Astartes; but in large and coordinated units their quantity develops a quality all its own. Though infinitesimally unlikely, the sheer volume of fire from large squads of this size can achieve statistical anomalies with an ease that would make a rational man believe in things like fate and make a gambler hedge his bets on impossible odds.

Despite such impossible odds, every chapter has a story or two of a brother being taken down by a lucky shot through an eye lens, or a stray piece of shrapnel in an armour joint, or some fluke that cannot be accounted for by mathematic unlikelihood, yet paradoxically must be assumed possible by sheer force of numbers alone and the constant perfidy of concepts like fortune. The practical and obvious lesson from such an assessment then is that massed lasfire is a threat worth noting, and as with all threats an Astartes must eliminate it with extreme prejudice.

The Consecrator thus shifted his sensibilities. Noting the locations of his squad he triangulated a suitable attack vector and released a data squirt among the squad's internal channels before unleashing a devastating salvo of death into the heart of the enemy's ranks. As he did and as he received confirms or denies from his squad mates, he quickly snapped free a grenade from his belt and lobbed it forward -- those not reduced to pulp beneath mass-reactive fire would soon receive a shower of shrapnel for their efforts. A simple but effective tactic against densely packed formations.

Spend a Fate Point to immediately shift into Squad Mode, and spend 3 Cohesion Points to activate Squad Mode Attack Pattern: Bolter Assault as a free action.

Half-Action: FAB (Suspensor)

Free-Action: Bolter Assault - Standard Attack with a Frag Grenade.

Mathematically even at minimum damage every shot will surpass their combined TB and armour of 8. Even so, here are their damages for clarity.

Magnitude Damage: 12 Total (6 FAB, +1 from Explosive damage type, +1 from Unrelenting Devastation, and +4 from Frag Grenade Blast value).

Lycus, as a veteran Astartes combatant of numerous battlefields against a myriad of foes, is well-accustomed to being vastly outnumbered by inferior opponents. Death by a thousand cuts is a commonly used expression across the Emperor's million world Empire, "Death by a three dozen las-rounds from a fear driven hysterical mob" doesn't quite roll off the tongue. That being said, massed small arms fire in a high enough density could bring low even the mightiest of the Emperor's champions, like a great boulder blasted by a great sandstorm.

"Take the head of the serpent..." Artemios thinks to himself as he draws his holstered bolt pistol and takes aim at the encroaching mob with both weapons, his servo-assisted arm easily able to support the weight of his Combi-Melta and more importantly resist the heavy recoil.

He aims the Combi-Melta to the centre of the horde, following the sound of the officer at it's centre barking orders at the lower ranks, already predicting the arc of his second salvo to end the heretical lives of the maximum number of targets in a short a time as possible, while fanning his bolt pistol in the opposite angle, to create to separate arks of righteous fire.

GM: One of the trickiest parts of the Deathwatch RPG to get the hang of (but also one of the most powerful) is Squad Mode. In Deathwatch, all Marines are either in Solo Mode or Squad Mode.

Many of you will have powerful Solo Mode abilities - for example, whilst in Solo Mode Pyke can halve the AP of any enemy cover, whilst doubling his own. However, if you activate Squad Mode it represents the Kill-Team working together as a unified whole.

Kill-Team Blackthorn (Sternguard)

++ROUND FOUR BEGINS++

Incariel:

Free Action: Incariel makes a Cohesion Challenge, attempting to roll equal to or under the Kill-Team's current Cohesion (9) on a D10 (per p.214 of the CRB)

Now Incariel is in Squad Mode, any other Battle-Brothers within 30m may (if they choose) immediately enter Squad Mode.

Incariel's turn then continues:

Half Action: Full Auto Burst (with Suspensor)

BS74(+20 FAB)(+10 Short Range)(+30 Horde Magnitude)=BS134: 19 (Pass, 11 DoS) - 1 Hit, +5 Additional (+1 Explosive Hit)

Hits resolve at 1D10+12(+2 Master Crafted, +2 Mighty Shot), Pen 5 = 7 Magnitude Damage (+1D5 Unrelenting Devastation: 1) = 8

Free Action: Incariel invokes the Squad Attack Pattern "Bolter Assault" for a cost of 3 Cohesion (6 Remaining)

When the Battle-Brother calls a Bolter Assault, both he and those in Support Range may make an immediate Charge Move and a Standard Attack with a bolter, bolt pistol, or storm

bolter (including variants of these weapons). Alternatively, they may use their Standard Attack to throw a grenade.

This is an aside from the normal turn order and takes place before the round continues with Artemios. Any Battle-Brother that has chosen to join Squad Mode can now fire a bolter or bolt pistol (single shot) or throw a grenade.

Incariel's Bolter Assault (Frag Grenade):

BS74(+30 Horde, -10 Long Range)=BS94: 76 (PASS)

Frag Grenade is Blast 4 and hits 4 times, doing 2D10+2, Pen 0 against TB4 and Armour 4:

Hit 1: 14+2: 16(-8 = 8)

Hit 2: 9+2: 11(-8 = 3)

Hit 3: 3+2: 5(-8 = 0)

Hit 4: 8+2: 10(-8 = 2)

3 Magnitude Damage Sustained

Horde is at 19 Magnitude Remaining (+10 to hit)

The triple shot effortlessly made the distance to Ekieos target. The trooper still unaware he had been spotted peaked for the last time, the last time he would breath, the last time he would see the glorious imperium that had be created. Then there was nothing for him. His body stayed motionless for a few seconds before gently slumping to the floor, blood flowing over the edge of the deck as a crimson waterfall, glistening like twilight skies in what little light reaches the platform.

There were no more, well not for the moment. The team knew that they needed to take up better positions as more would come, there are always more! Ekieo and Pyke took the front position with cover on the left of the gantry, a clear sight to the large loading doors. The rest of the team took the took respectively behind them, all poised and ready for what might come next.

The large doors opened and a horde of troopers with their superior slowly worked their way on the gantry. Las gun strikes flying past the team as they prepared to return fire. INCARIEL begins thew fray with a wall of bolter fire straight into the horde before throwing a frag grenade, the explosion showering the large group of troopers in shrapnel.

Ekieo decides to thin the horde further with another frag grenade. He primes it and then with super human throw, launches the grenade into the encroaching enemy.

Grenades denotate in and around the unit that are defending the large heavy doors. Shrapnel flies through the air from the frag explosions, piercing skin, breaking bones and shredding bodies. With their officer now dead panic sets in and the troopers begin to look uneasy, broken, almost void of their senses. With no command firing becomes erratic and uncontrolled, but Blackthorn know that Now is the time, the final push, the moment to shut this down and move forward with there mission.

Ekieo, focused and determined, rises from behind his cover and with fluidity aims into the remaining dazed troopers, opening fire on them with another semi auto burst from his trusted bolter. Calm before the hail of rounds shatter the silence that sits between the mayhem of Las rifle shots and the bloody screams of the wounded. No hope they shall have, no mercy will they be given.

49bs +10 bolter Mastery, +10 semi auto burst = 69
rolled 20 = 4DoS

Bolter = 3 hits

20 reversed = 02 hit location head shot

1st hit + tearing - 2D10+9 rolled 3 & 7 discard 3 - 7+9 = 16 +2 (Bolter Mastery) = 18

Kill-Team Blackthorn (Sternguard)

GM: Please be aware that I have updated and corrected the Bolter Assault above in my last post; this post will continue from Solza in the turn order.

Solza:

Full Action: Semi-Auto Burst against Horde

BS49(+10 Semi-Auto Burst)(+10 Bolter Mastery)(+10 Horde Magnitude)(+10 Range)=BS89: 20 (HIT, 6DoS) - 1 Hit (+2 Additional for 4DoS)

Hits resolve at 1D10+9(+2 Bolter Mastery), Pen4 against TB4 and Armour 4(0)

Because the Bolter is an explosive weapon, it also gains an additional hit (for four total).

4 Magnitude Damage - Horde is now at 7 Magnitude

Arcost:

Full Action: Semi-Auto Burst against Horde

BS44(+10 Semi-Auto Burst)=BS54: 48 (HIT, 0DoS)

Hits reoslve at 1D10+9, Pen 4 against TB4 and Armour 4(0)

Because the Bolter is an explosive weapon, it also gains an additional hit

2 Magnitude Damage - Horde is now at 5 Magnitude

Trooper Horde:

Horde has been reduced from 30 to 5 in one turn (83% losses)

Horde automatically breaks and flees - although it has nowhere to go to.

Greysight:

Greysight opts not to fire, allowing Pyke to finish off the horde.

Pyke:

Pyke made a Charge move during the Bolter Assault, moving 18m forward (3 and a bit squares)

Half Action: Move (6m)

Half Action: Semi-Auto Burst (with Suspensors) including an additional Half Move of 6m (p.242 of CRB)

This puts him 30m of his point on the map above (so six squares) and ~20m away from the Horde

BS62(+10 Motion Predictor)=BS72: 62 (1DoS) = 1 Hit (x3 due to Blast 3)

Hits resolve at 3D10+5(+2 Mighty Shot), Pen 4 against TB4 and Armour 4(0)

= 3 Magnitude Damage

Pyke's Armour History gives +1 Horde Magnitude Damage (4 Total)

Pyke's Unrelenting Devastation Skill gives +1D5 Magnitude Damage against Hordes whilst in Squad Mode: 4 (7 Total)

Horde is wiped out

++COMBAT ENDS++

GM: Members of the Sternguard: Feel free to spend a few moments describing the scene of utter carnage, communicating with the Vanguard, making pithy quips or assessing one anothers' performance in battle. You will be able to breach the armoured doors into the compound narratively.

Steel: The Sternguard and the Vanguard will be able to reunite within the Household. Please divide the characters into three sub-groups using whichever criteria you prefer. Each sub-group will be on a different "battlefield" within the household. Sabaan will be supporting via Spearcast.

Bolter fire rains upon the troopers, grenades detonate, chaos, carnage it spreads like wildfire through their unit. Then for a brief moment, a pause in the deafening devastation all Ekieo can hear is the soft hum of the electronics within his helm. His eyes close for what feel like an eternity and within that time there is nothing. He feels not, see’s not, remembers nothing, he is just there in the darkness and content. His eyes open, the sounds of the devastation ring once again and Ekieo is with his team again, on point and with all the focus that the Emperor can grant.

Some remaining troopers bolted, there minds now forever engrained with the image and nightmares that beheld them. They were left to flee, their fate probably worse than what had just transpired. The gantry is a wash with gore, flowing off the platform like the gentle streams that Ekieo remembers of his home world. There are no screams, only the sound of chocking fills the air as dying troopers hold onto what fleeting painful life they have left.

EKIeo walks through the mess. He takes no real pride in what he see’s. They were mere mortals with no real chance against a Kill Team of this calibre. They were literally sent to their deaths so that a coward could bide some more time of his futile life. Ekieo even respected their efforts, they stood true and fought with some kind of heart. A almost sigh left Ekieos chest, as he looked upon the corpse of a young trooper, well what was left of him. These could have been good soldiers in the guard had their lives played differently.

Ekieo looked around cautiously as the Team also wadded through the gore to looking at their handy work. They approached the large doors that were between them and their true target.

Lycus lowers his weapons, holstering his pistol, as the last of traitor guards still bleeds out onto the ground before the Demi-Squad. The engagement had lasted mere seconds, but already Lycus was going through every moment of it as if it were some archived data pour over by an initiate in the beginning of their training.

Perhaps a staggered deployment, save time on the advance for the Tactical brothers ....

Lycus shakes the thought from his head, before engaging the com-bead installed in his helmet.

+ Tyber, secondary landing successful. All targets neutralised, zero casualties. On your word we move onto the next objective.+

He closes the link, waiting to see if he will be able to detect spite in his response.

Perhaps the command of the demi-squad is to see if I can be trusted...

Once again he shakes the thought from his head. Now is not the time to second guess the Kill-team leader. Now is the time for action.

Now is the time for Death.

Ekieo inspects the door. The security system seems to have been damaged in the gun fight and it looks like the armoured door is made of some form of Ceramite. Knowing that this could pose a problem and be time consuming to the mission, Ekieo Vox’s Tyber looking for authorization to a creative solution to the issue.

“Sergeant Tyber”.

Theres a pause before Tyber responds to Ekieos coms

“Brother Solza”

Ekieo informs tyber of the findings and maybe a solution to the problem.

“The door to gain entry into the rest of the Building, Its made of ceramite. Pretty large amount of it. They built this to withstand a tank. Permission to utilise Brother Sabaan and Spearcast? A key to fit this lock”.

“If that is our option then request granted. Call in Spearcast for some door support”.

With that Ekeio switches vox channels to Sabaan in Spearcast.

“Brother Sabaan, we have a door that needs opening down here. Sergeant Tyber has authorised the use of Spearcast, can you assist”?
