Power From Pain - Halandaar's Drukhari

Hi all,

I had a reasonably large Dark Eldar army which I sold some years ago, and have regretted ever since. Recently while clearing out various boxes of half-built models, I found enough components from that old army to put together nine Kabalite Warriors. Doing so reminded me just how much I love the look of the model range, and with the new Codex on the horizon, I decided my next project would be my first foray outside Imperial space here at the B&C and a return to one of my favourite factions in the setting.

My objective is to put together a 1,000 point army; obviously the Codex may well bring a few changes to what's desirable and what isn't, but to be honest, rule of cool is always preferable to me over what's most effective.

And finally, just a quick blast of colours on to one of my spare-bits Kabalites to give an idea of that the scheme will be; it's just a really messy drybrush of Xereus Purple over a black basecoat, with a followup lighter drybrush of Slaanesh Grey and a wash of Druchii Violet.

Edit: Spelling is hard.

Your model looks criminally good for a bit of dry brushing so it doesn't seem like you should take too long to get 1,000 points together :tu: What additional colours are you going for? A silver could be really nice as an accent, though I think a gold could work also?

Are you going to go for a more metallic(shiny, cold),coloring? I like this so far.

That's a nice output for such a simple method. Looking forward to seeing this progress.

Ah, another has discovered the secret of how to make drybrushing not look like drybrushing.

Looks promising!

Damn that looks incredibly good! Looking forward to seeing that warrior fully finished.

Thanks everybody! I have to say I was very happy with the initial result, given that the actual painting time invested was probably less than 5 minutes (not including drying time for the wash). I don't have the patience for line highlighting at all, so this seemed like a viable way to achieve a similar effect, and has gone well so far. It will work great for infantry models, but i'm not sure how well it will apply to vehicles, considering all the big, flat panels.

As for additional colours, I took some cues from the Kabal of the Last Hatred scheme, with their light blue accents, and came up with this;

Sadly the lighting in this photo has washed the drybrush highlights out a little bit, they are still there in reality! I initially went just for Leadbelcher on the Splinter Rifle, but went back and did the barrel in Balthasar Gold to break it up a bit. I quite like the effect, so I think this is what I'll go for overall.

Much as I like the flayed skin loincloths, I think having them as dyed cloth does a lot more for the overall look of the mini, so the flayed skin will be the realm of Coven units only (if I get around to getting any!)

I was planning on grabbing a Start Collecting box at the end of the month to get the force going, but i was walking past GW the other day and spotted this on the shelves; hard to resist ~

That purple is awesome And just the effect I was looking for, albeit in blue. I'll have to try that for my Poisoned Tongue Kabal :tu:

Thanks, it really is a satisfying output for such a low-effort scheme. My initial DE army was actually done with blues using a similar technique, so I can attest to the fact that is will look good in those colours too :)

  • 1 month later...

Finally managed to get a bit of work done on my Drukhari; I've built the contents of Gangs of Comorragh, with the Hellions approaching completion, and initial colours slapped on the Reavers.

I also picked up the old Start Collecting box and a couple of boxes of Scourges, and I have the new Start Collecting Box on the way at the weekend. Hopefully it arrives in time for me to throw them together and head straight into my first game with them on Saturday!

Awesome work, Halandaar!  I didn't even realize you played DE until I found this thread, and I was surprised to see such an original and eye-catching scheme.  Based on the colours you've chosen, how were you thinking of painting the Scourge's wings?

Haha yes; despite my enthusiasm for all things Astartes, the Eldar have always been my favourite race in the setting going back as far as 2nd edition. My first ever models were the old push-fit Guardians with Lasguns and some metal Striking Scorpions, and the Dark Eldar were the first proper army I "completed" (ha) after my return to the hobby in 2011-ish. I played a lot of games with them through 5th and 6th edition and was genuinely gutted when I had to sell them.

As for the Scourges, I have to admit they've been causing me a bit of consternation with regard to a colour scheme for the wings. For the feathery ones, I'm currently thinking a gradient of blues, with the tips being the same colour I've used for the hair on the Hellions. For the bat-like ones, I'm torn between a "fleshy" sort of scheme (similar to the way GW painted the Khinerai Lifetakers) or a more subdued black/grey, but I suspect the latter would probably look more of a natural fit with the blue feathers in a mixed unit.

A big "yay" for Dark Sphere who managed to get my new stuff to me even earlier than if I'd gone to GW at opening time! Now to get plotting!

<--- Count me jelly

Plot away, good sir!  And drop some knowledge bombs on us if you get the time :)

So I had a frantic morning of building and throwing some basic colours on the models, followed by a game with the new Codex in the evening. My list was largely dictated by what models I had available (the price reductions meant even at 1000 points I had to field pretty much everything I had), which was;

Batallion Detachment (Kabal of the Obsidian Rose)

  • Archon (Blast Pistol, Agoniser)
  • Archon (Husk Blade, Phantasm Grenade Launcher)
  • 9 Kabalite Warriors (Agoniser, Blaster) in Raider (Dark Lance, Splinter Racks)
  • 5 Kabalite Warriors (Blaster) in Venom (2 Splinter Cannons)
  • 5 Kabalite Warriors (Splinter Cannon)

Outrider Detchment (Cult of the Cursed Blade)

  • Succubus (Archite Glaive, The Triptych Whip)
  • 9 Wyches (Shardnet & Impaler, Agoniser)
  • 10 Hellions (Agoniser)
  • 6 Reavers (Cluster Caltrops, Agoniser, 2 Blasters)
  • 5 Scourges

I was facing off against a World Eaters list with a couple of units of berserkers, led by Kh

Looking good man! Always an exciting time to be building new models for the codex.

Sounds like your game was a tough matchup for you. I've found so far that wyches are a solid assault unit but yeah they aren't a match for assault monsters like bezerekers. Just need more blasters/dark lances to pop open and leave those berzerkers stranded so you can take them out at your leisure.

Yeah, I feel like it was just the wrong matchup for Wyches as there weren't really any targets they could properly sink their teeth into. They'd probably mow down cultists and the like and be able to stick around too, but even after inflicting some casualties, Berserkers fighting twice just flattened them.

Regarding Anti-tank, it's a shame that Dark Lances and their portable equivalents are the only real options. Haywire Blasters are eye-catching because of their Mortal Wounds mechanic being effective regardless of vehicle toughness and the potential to pump out a high number of shots. The high-roll potential is massive, if extremely unlikely (36 mortal wounds plus regular damage from 4 Scourges), but it looks like the average Blaster volley is going to be more effective and reliable than the average Haywire volley, in addition to being effective against more targets. Sad, because Haywire Blasters also look awesome.

What color did you use on that whip?

Same question. Oxide? Great army btw can't wait to see the finished product and I've been leaning purple as well.

Looks like oxide over white to me, yeah. Regardless, awesome work!

Correct! It's Nihilakh Oxide over a white basecoat.
