The 38th Harrow 'Children of Eris'

The 38th Harrow, known as the ‘Children of Eris’ to their Imperial counterparts, represent a prime example of the XX Legion’s core ideology taken to the point of excess. Leading the Sons of Strife is a core of 18 captains, who have all committed themselves fully to the study and examination of the methodologies and mindsets of the 18 Legions and their allies. Most of them are noted as having gone so far in their quest for knowledge that they have infiltrated the Legion of their study for long periods of time, compelled to get a closer look at the inner workings of their subjects. Although some have inevitably lost parts of themselves along this journey, filling in those empty spaces with traits representative of the Legions they've devoted themselves to, such extremes only serve to further the Harrow’s chief objective: the evolution of a Chapter-sized force into an adaptable microcosm of assets and tactics taken from every Space Marine Legion under the Imperium's banner.

These 18 captains, or ‘Praecursors’ as they’re referred to within the Harrow, serve as the executive body at the head of the 38th, passing the title of Harrowmaster freely between one another as the need arises, maintaining a mutable quality about their command structure. Contrary to this mutable quality however, there exists a tradition, established early within the Harrow’s formation that has dictated every move since. Each Cohort features a specialized sect of Space Marines dubbed the ‘Oblivitii,’ drawn from the rank and file of the Legion to serve as agents of mayhem, fully committed to learning the way of war taught by the Legion of their respective Praecursor’s study, and equipped accordingly with the pilfered wargear of that Legion’s specialists.

This leads to all but one of the 18 Cohorts within the 38th Harrow of the Alpha Legion to sport a unique unit of Legionnaires who bear the heraldry and armaments of entirely different Legions than the rest of their Strifeborn brethren, corresponding with those infiltrated by their respective Praecursors so long ago. With the outbreak of the Horus Heresy, these Oblivitii have been used for increasingly nefarious ends alongside the assets of the XX Legion proper, proving invaluable in the Harrowings carried out against Loyalist forces of the Legiones Astartes, but as with all wars, casualties are unavoidable.

Each loss suffered by the 38th, be it their Oblivitii specialists or their leading Praecursors, is a hefty blow dealt to the Harrow. In cases of a Praecursor's death, an Oblivitii in service to that particular Praecursor is elected to assume their late captain's position, taking on not only their title, but their identity as well. In cases of an Oblivitii's death, a Legionnaire is drawn from the closest unit in function to that of the Cohort's Oblivitii, who is then subject to the same extensive training and field preparation required to impersonate the members of another Legion's specialist units. But alas, one could not avoid the heavy losses sustained by all participating forces of the Horus Heresy, and these same losses would doom the Harrow's chief objective to failure as it became too difficult to maintain, ultimately splitting the 38th apart at the seams in the wake of the conflict taking place within the XX Legion.

Hey everyone, and welcome to my hobby thread. I've been sorta bad at staying consistent when it comes to these sorts of things, but I'm hoping to turn that around. Here, I'll be updating regularly as I build and paint my Alpha Legion force, along with some of their human auxiliaries, and some special guest stars from a certain VIII Legion I'm also collecting at the moment. You can expect me to write some fluff for my Children of Eris and their associates when the mood strikes me, building up the miscellany of characters present within the 38th Harrow and their allies.

That said, let's get started with my army so far:

Very excited to see this thread and I love the concept. Your models look very nice and the only comment I have is that they look like they've been in the field a fair bit, but your decals look pristine. Something to think about.

Play on good sir!

‘I am Alpharius.’

The phrase still permeated her thoughts. Her meeting with the Lord Primarch of the XX Legion felt as though it had been branded into her psyche. She had never met a son of the Emperor before, let alone their own sons, and it was a sight like no other to behold. But now was not the time to let her mind wander. She had been given newfound purpose by Lord Alpharius, and was determined to see her task through, no matter the cost.

Meira Vaald was commanding officer of the Artemian Hounds’ 23rd Infantry Regiment, and with a small selection of the most trustworthy men and women in her service, she set out to accomplish what the XX Primarch had asked of her. It was Meira who pulled the trigger that would deliver Artemia into the clutches of the VIII Legion, dooming its inhabitants to a fate worse than death. Meanwhile, her Regiment alone would be spared such a gruesome end by declaring themselves to the 38th Harrow of the Alpha Legion, the Children of the Eris.

Since that day, they had toiled endlessly as clandestine operatives of the XX Legion, carrying out covert missions on the behalf of their newfound masters. Today was the day that her second-in-command, Uldo Praxx, Grenadier Sergeant of the Artemian 23rd Infantry, was to embark on a solo operation. The location was a hive, sequestered in the red dunes of Valthion III, and it was his duty to eliminate key targets, laying the foundation for the eventual invasion of the 38th Harrow.

Thought I'd drop an outline of my force to-be while I currently get things sorted out. I've got most all of the models necessary, it's just a matter of getting them assembled and painted.

- XV Praecursor (Librarian)

- (Veteran) Tactical Squad 1

- Seeker Squad

- Khenetai Occult Cabal

- Assault Squad

- (Veteran) Tactical Squad 2

- Rhinos 1, 2, 3

An additional note that some of you may have already noticed is that I'll be scaling up certain models in the force, while using most at their base height. The scaling will be reserved for the specialists, such as those armed with special/heavy weapons, as well as Sergeants. This will hopefully bring some diversity to the force on the tabletop, as well as help those particularly important Legionnaires stand out.

Rhamos. A psyker with only a taste of what true psychic mastery meant after a meeting with the Thousand Sons. It was inevitable that he found himself drawn to the XV Legion in his studies, and in his search for knowledge, the Cult of the Corvidae was his primary focus. His pursuit of one such Cult was fueled largely by his desire to better understand and utilize his gift of preternatural foresight, but this did not come without consequence. He frequently fell short in his service to the XX Legion due to his desperate bid for knowledge and power, having often neglected to report his findings regularly, as per protocol, in favor of fully dedicating himself to the psychic practices of the Thousand Sons. Although his eventual return to the 38th Harrow brought with him vast knowledge of the XV Legion because of such pursuits, he was brought to question after having kept such a troublesome distance from his fellow Praecursors for so long, leading many to question where his true loyalties lie for years to come.

The terror marking on the Night Lord is very well done, as is the eye on Rhamos' chest. Nice pose on Rhamos too, one can almost see him striding forth, blasting the enemy with bolts of arcane force.

  • 4 months later...

Well, it's been a while. Hobby stuff has fallen to the wayside for longer than I'd like to admit, and I'm eager to get back into the swing of things. To help kickstart this back up, a small update: indecisiveness got the better of me, but I believe I've finally settled on a scheme I'm fully satisfied with. This means the (admittedly little) progress I made will be getting a boot back to square one, but I feel that the setback will be well worth it.

I'm still working on the first batch of Tacticals in the new scheme, and pictures will of course be posted once some decent progress has been made. There's also a pair of characters I've had the joy of working on prior to starting these Tacticals, who I'll be writing some fluff up for and posting soon.

Muffled vox-clicks were lost among the startled cries of numerous Legionaries clad in the fiery yellow of the VII. Detonations began to ripple through the convoy in a staccato rhythm just as it began on its way out of the garrison, crippling the armoured column before any true headway had even been made. Few warriors were lost in the initial blasts that shook the yellow-armoured Legionaries where they stood, but those that remained were forced to pile out of their wrecked vehicles, exposed to the carnage that now surrounded them.

Within moments, a barrage of bolter fire pierced the smoke that surrounded the Imperial Fists, each expertly placed shot piercing their power armour with ease - the work of the Scorpius ammunition employed frequently by the Seekers of the Legiones Astartes. In the end of it all, but a single son of Dorn was left alive beyond the gates of their outpost - knocked prone by the bolt shell that struck him in one of his twin hearts - and as the smoke only just began to clear, his eyes fell upon a single Astartes, who was clad in the metallic blue warplate of the Alpha Legion, and smothered by the unnatural darkness of a cameleoline cloak.

Only dogged breath, wet with the blood that began filling his mouth, escaped the prone Imperial Fist as he looked up at his aggressor, fully aware he would die where he lay. An empty vox-click came from the azure serpent as he looked down at the golden warrior and pointed his plasma pistol at him, squeezing the trigger and ending the dying Space Marine’s life.
